Book excerpt: A Girl's Echoing Voice in the Zimbabwe Chimurenga Guerrilla Girl is a historical novel, set amidst the backdrop of the struggle for liberation of Zimbabwe. Whilst the names of the characters are fictitious, the majority of events and places are true. The main protagonist in this novel is also the narrator; a woman fully involved as a trained fighter in most of the events. The story depicts an account of how the women were fully involved in the liberation struggle. The other element to the story is how the women of Zimbabwe had to fight the battle on two fronts, against two kinds of enemy: the struggle against the common enemy, the colonialist, and the struggle against male chauvinism. Most of the African men in Zimbabwe found it hard to accept their women as fighters, let alone armed guerrillas. So women had a hard time trying to assert themselves as capable and trusted liberators. Women were always in extreme danger of being put down by their male counterparts. About the author Helen is a retired college principal lecturer. She grew up in Colonial Zimbabwe, Southern Rhodesia. Initially she trained as a nurse but later worked as a tailor in a garment factory. Helen then joined the African Trade Union Congress and became involved in trade unionism which eventually led to involvement with national political groups. Through her political activities, she met her future husband. Because of their political views they ended up in exile. During this period, they lived in Tanganyika (now Tanzania), USA, UK and Kenya. Helen and her husband remained involved in party politics during their time in exile. They returned to Zimbabwe at independence in 1980. As a black woman, Helen has known extreme poverty and discrimination. She has a passion for the emancipation and advancement of women.

Book Synopsis The Heart of What Matters by : Anthony Cunningham
Download or read book The Heart of What Matters written by Anthony Cunningham and published by Univ of California Press. This book was released on 2001-09-11 with total page 318 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Heart of What Matters shows that literature has a powerful and unique role to play in understanding life's deepest ethical problems. Anthony Cunningham provides a rigorous critique of Kantian ethics, which has enjoyed a preeminent place in moral philosophy in the United States, arguing that it does not do justice to the reality of our lives. He demonstrates how fine literature can play an important role in honing our capacity to see clearly and choose wisely as he develops a moral philosophy that engages with our intimate emotional concerns. Written in an accessible style and drawing from a provocative body of contemporary literature, this book shows how moral philosophy can reach a far wider audience than it has. In part one of this book, Cunningham sketches out the theoretical basis for a redefined conception of moral philosophy. In part two, he engages in extended analyses of novels that address significant life and character issues, specifically Kazuo Ishiguro's The Remains of the Day, Toni Morrison's Beloved, and Zora Neale Hurston's Their Eyes Were Watching God and Seraph on the Suwanee. Cunningham shows exactly how works like these can inform moral philosophy. Drawing from film, history, psychology, and other social sciences in addition to literature, this book adds to the growing number of works that use literature for ethical analysis and to the growing controversy over Kantian ethic

Book Synopsis A Political Biography of the Indonesian Lesbian, Bisexual and Trans Movement by : Saskia Wieringa
Download or read book A Political Biography of the Indonesian Lesbian, Bisexual and Trans Movement written by Saskia Wieringa and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2024-04-04 with total page 296 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Here, the history of the Indonesian LBT movement is charted, from invisibility, to visibility and now as it moves again into hiding. In the early 1980s, during the oppressive military dictatorship called the New Order in Indonesia, the first organizations of Lesbian, Bisexual and Trans persons were established. They were short-lived, but prepared the ground for a more comprehensive LBT rights movement after the democratic opening of society in 1998. From 2000 to 2015 the visibility of the movement grew, until a vicious state-sponsored backlash set in, driven by majoritarian, fundamentalist Islamist groups. Saskia Wieringa tracks the movement's progress and explores the persistence of the butch/femme model of relationships; the proliferations of identities; family violence and conversion therapy; religion; and the anti-LGBT campaign. In its insistence on the local dynamics of this movement, the book aims to debunk the idea that homosexuality is a Western import. Chapters deal with the many religious and secular phenomena that are linked with gender diversity and same-sex relations traditionally, and the erasure of many of these traditions is explained using the concept of postcolonial amnesia. A Political Biography of the Indonesian Lesbian, Bisexual and Trans Movement is also a contribution to the growing literature on decolonization studies, pointing out that its dynamics, its historical course and its present condition, different as they are from the dominant Western view on a global LGBT movement, needs to be considered as valuable as accounts of Western LGBT histories are.
