Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For this catalog, Kalman A. Burnim has selected more than 360 portraits from various editions of the John Bell publication Bell's Shakespeare (including John Barker's continuation of 1799-1800) and from Bell's British Theatre (including George Cawthorn's 1797 edition). Philip H. Highfill Jr. has furnished the introductory essay for the catalog. Most of these portraits are by James Roberts and Samuel De Wilde, who were among the leading painters of actors and actresses between 1770 and 1820. Richard Cosway, William Hamilton, Gilbert Stuart, and other painters also have work represented in the catalog. The engraved versions are by James Thornthwaite, William Leney, Philippe Audinet, and others. When possible, each entry is illustrated by a reproduction of the engraving or by an original picture. For each entry, Burnim provides details of publication, the provenance and related pictures, the locations of the originals, and commentary.
Book Synopsis Shakespeare, Theory and Performance by : James C. Bulman
Download or read book Shakespeare, Theory and Performance written by James C. Bulman and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2003-09-02 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Shakespeare, Theory and Performance is a groundbreaking collection of seminal essays which apply the abstract theory of Shakespearean criticism to the practicalities of performance. Bringing together the key names from both realms, the collection reflects a wide range of sources and influences, from traditional literary, performance and historical criticism to modern cultural theory. Together they raise questions about the place of performance criticism in modern and often competing debates of cultural materialism, new historicism, feminism and deconstruction. An exciting and fascinating volume, it will be important reading for students and scholars of literary and theatre studies alike.

Book Synopsis Recognizing the Romantic Novel by : Jillian Heydt-Stevenson
Download or read book Recognizing the Romantic Novel written by Jillian Heydt-Stevenson and published by Liverpool University Press. This book was released on 2010-01-01 with total page 358 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The field of literature changed dramatically at the end of the eighteenth century, as under the shadow of Romanticism the novel became the most important literary genre of its day. Often neglected, the novels of the Romantic era puzzle critics yet are much more concerned with the unexpected, the unconventional, and the uncanny than their immediate predecessors or successors, and their authors include some of the most important novelists of British literary history—Jane Austen, Fanny Burney, James Hogg, Mary Shelley, and Sir Walter Scott among them. Featuring contributions from distinguished scholars in the field, Recognizing the Romantic Novel evaluates the vibrancy and centrality of the Romantic novel, showcasing the important new voices and directions in the field and showing it can hold its own in the canon of literary scholarship. “These essays offer us a lens through which we may recognize the Romantic novel as it has never been recognized before.”—Times Literary Supplement
