Book Synopsis The Snail Darter and the Dam by : Zygmunt Jan Broel Plater
Download or read book The Snail Darter and the Dam written by Zygmunt Jan Broel Plater and published by Yale University Press. This book was released on 2013-06-18 with total page 516 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: DIVEven today, thirty years after the legal battles to save the endangered snail darter, the little fish that blocked completion of a TVA dam is still invoked as an icon of leftist extremism and governmental foolishness. In this eye-opening book, the lawyer who with his students fought and won the Supreme Court case—known officially as Tennessee Valley Authority v. Hill—tells the hidden story behind one of the nation’s most significant environmental law battles. /divDIV The realities of the darter’s case, Plater asserts, have been consistently mischaracterized in politics and the media. This book offers a detailed account of the six-year crusade against a pork-barrel project that made no economic sense and was flawed from the start. In reality TVA’s project was designed for recreation and real estate development. And at the heart of the little group fighting the project in the courts and Congress were family farmers trying to save their homes and farms, most of which were to be resold in a corporate land development scheme. Plater’s gripping tale of citizens navigating the tangled corridors of national power stimulates important questions about our nation’s governance, and at last sets the snail darter’s record straight. /div

Book excerpt: Starting in 1970 the US Army Corps of Engineers and a large construction company began to build a flood control dam in Southwestern Ohio. Setbacks and obstacles plagued the project during the six years of construction.Environmental opponents objected to the project long before the builders started their work. Opponents claimed the cost was excessive and the dam unnecessary. The opponents accused the government of being uncaring about the 185 families whose homes and farms were taken to make way for the dam. Delaying and protesting devices included injunctions, camp-ins, the voices of politicians, and biased newspaper articles.Weather, floods, and accidents hampered the contractor during the six years spent building the dam. Union disputes and personal tragedies complicated the difficult and ominous task. The ulterior motives of a rogue government inspector added to the contractor's problems.A politician and three realtors took advantage of hapless owners who wanted to sell. Some owners resorted to deception to enhance the value of their property. The story behind the dam is about hardships and perils that were part of the workers' lives. Their unheralded efforts made the dam a beautiful and useful reality. Without tribute, they put a little of themselves into the dam and lake. In the final stages, a financial crisis threatens the contractor's business life. The government's resident engineer and the contractor's project manager had the same goal, build the dam. They set aside conflicting motives to focus on and solve the projects many problems and challenges.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A modern, ex-Christian, tree-hugging American woman comes up against a strange wish for church--but only if it could be radically different from what she's known. It would have to be one steeped in women's equality and freedom of thought. Unexpectedly, she finds herself on a journey like a canoe trip. The journey will heal her past, widen her present world, and offer hope for the future. Guided by her experiences in river canoeing--navigating the river, learning its currents, and riding its sparkling energy--her story unfolds through twelve years of pointed questions, congenial fellow travelers, and zesty discoveries. She experiences firsthand what she cannot get from a solo journey, including what it is to support Native Americans, and how Black womanist theology can make her a better white ally of Black women. Paddling the river, she is helped around fallen trees of biblical mistranslation and anti-woman dogma. After a cold-water crash, she repairs her canoe and emerges joyful again with a new, more flexible strength. Looking ahead, she follows clues about how the river is changing other churches--renewing and making them better neighbors and climate activists.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A portion of a flood-weakened concrete and masonry dam was deliberately demolished by explosives in June 1972 near Rapid City, South Dakota. The demolition was carried out to forestall the possibility of the dam's collapse in the event of renewed flooding during the period of devastating floods in Rapid City. An 80- by 25-foot segment on the left abutment was cleanly removed by 3000 pounds of explosives. The portion to be removed was outlined by explosively-loaded 2-inch diameter holes on 1-foot centers, the reinforced concrete panels were broken up by seven 150-pound surface charges, and the broken material was ejected by a 1700-pound cratering charge emplaced in a cavity in the dam. All explosives were detonated simultaneously. (Author).

Download or read book Earth Materials written by Dexter Perkins and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2019-07-24 with total page 557 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There is a large and growing need for a textbook that can form the basis for integrated classes that look at minerals, rocks, and other Earth materials. Despite the need, no high-quality book is available for such a course. Earth Materials is a wide-ranging undergraduate textbook that covers all the most important kinds of (inorganic) Earth materials. Besides traditional chapters on minerals and rocks, this book features chapters on sediments and stratigraphy, weathering and soils, water and the hydrosphere, and mineral and energy deposits. Introductions to soil mechanics and rock mechanics are also included. This book steers away from the model of traditional encyclopedic science textbooks, but rather exposes students to the key and most exciting ideas and information, with an emphasis on thinking about Earth as a system. The book is written in such a manner as to support inquiry, discovery and other forms of active learning. All chapters start with a short topical story or vignette, and the plentiful photographs and other graphics are integrated completely with the text. Earth Materials will be interesting and useful for a wide range of learners, including geoscience students, students taking mineralogy and petrology courses, engineers, and anyone interested in learning more about the Earth as a system.
