Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A very short book, "Mother and Child were Saved" features a translation of the memoirs that Frisian midwife, Catharina Schrader had written in the late 17th and the early 18th centuries. These were extracted from her notes that documented almost 3000 deliveries over the course of Schrader's career as a midwife. The memoir, exhibited around 100 of the most complicated that Schrader had helped with. These included both mother and child who had died, some where only the child died, some where one of a set of multiples lived, some where both lived happily. Though the essays and the introduction focus on the medical aspects of Schrader's career. The social aspect as a female midwife in a period of medicalized transition cannot be overlooked. One can see the burgeoning reticence emanate even from Schrader herself towards midwives who were incompetent and merely "tortured" their patients. However, this Memoir is integral for any study of midwifery in Europe during the early modern period. While the introductory essays could have been expanded to consider the social consequences of gender and midwifery, the fact that the Memoirs have been translated from their mix of three languages (Dutch, German and Frisian) into one ubiquitous language: English, gives the modern historian greater access to a primary source that details the travails and tribulations that women faced during this period that did not have the same kind of prenatal care that women see today. Ultimately, women faced with every birth, the possibility that they could die, and this memoir shows that there was a marked response to do anything they could to prevent that on the part of midwives and other obstetrical practitioners during this period. Regardless with the lack of exploration into the issues surrounding gender or the views of conception or any other number of paths that the essayists at the beginning could have explored, this work should be read by any historian that is considering gender in the early modern period.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A uniquely illuminating memoir of the making of a musician, in which renowned pianist Jeremy Denk explores what he learned from his teachers about classical music: its forms, its power, its meaning - and what it can teach us about ourselves. In this searching and funny memoir, based on his popular New Yorker article, renowned pianist Jeremy Denk traces an implausible journey. Life is difficult enough as a precocious, temperamental, and insufferable six-year-old piano prodigy in New Jersey. But then a family meltdown forces a move to New Mexico, far from classical music’s nerve centers, and he has to please a new taskmaster while navigating cacti, and the perils of junior high school. Escaping from New Mexico at last, he meets a bewildering cast of college music teachers, ranging from boring to profound, and experiences a series of humiliations and triumphs, to find his way as one of the world’s greatest living pianists, a MacArthur 'Genius,' and a frequent performer at Carnegie Hall. There are few writers working today who are willing to eloquently explore both the joys and miseries of artistic practice. Hours of daily repetition, mystifying early advice, pressure from parents and teachers who drove him on – an ongoing battle of talent against two enemies: boredom and insecurity. As we meet various teachers, with cruel and kind streaks, Denk composes a fraught love letter to the act of teaching. He brings you behind the scenes, to look at what motivates both student and teacher, locked in a complicated and psychologically perilous relationship. In Every Good Boy Does Fine, Denk explores how classical music is relevant to 'real life,' despite its distance in time. He dives into pieces and composers that have shaped him – Bach, Mozart, Schubert, and Brahms, among others – and gives unusual lessons on melody, harmony, and rhythm. Why and how do these fundamental elements have such a visceral effect on us? He tries to sum up many of the lessons he has received, to repay the debt of all his amazing teachers; to remind us that music is our creation, and that we need to keep asking questions about its purpose.

Book excerpt: A daring novel from the acclaimed author of Those Who Are Saved: female rage, grief, and creativity collide in the present and animate the past, when a woman reconnects with her essential self during a summer journey, and discovers an ancient female world that offers parallels to her own Kept busy by her obligations as a wife and mother, art history professor Ava Zaretsky has little time to devote to her research and writing. Now tagging along on her film-producer husband’s shoot in Bulgaria for the summer, where she’s mostly solo parenting her sweet son and rebellious budding tween daughter, she has a chance encounter with her fierce feminist mentor from college, which changes everything. Ava is swept up into a circle of women who reenact ancient Greco-Roman mystery rites of initiation, bringing her research to life and illuminating the story of a 5th-century-BC mother-daughter pair whose sense of female loyalty to each other and connection to the divine feminine guides Ava in her exploration of the eternal stages of womanhood. Reaching across time and deep into the female psyche, The Mother of All Things delivers a revelatory tale of a woman coming to terms with her evolving sense of responsibility to herself and her family, as she achieves a new appreciation of the gifts of female wisdom and self-belief.

Book excerpt: Winner of the 2021 Global Humanities Translation Prize Among Murathan Mungan’s signature works, Cenk Hikâyeleri (Valor: Stories) has long been considered a milestone of twentieth-century Turkish literature. The six short stories in the collection reflect the author’s multiethnic background (which includes Kurdish, Arab, and Turkish heritage) and represent his lush poetics, literary breadth, and sociopolitical commitments. Valor reimagines Shahmaran, a mythical half‐human, half‐snake figure that commonly appears in the folklore of Turkey’s southeastern provinces. Legend interweaves with the contemporary realities of ethnicity, religious dogma, gender, and sexuality. Uncovering hidden narratives within a rich and complicated culture, Mungan’s stories depict self-realization and sexual awakening as they showcase one of Turkey’s most popular literary voices.

Book excerpt: "Cause and Effect" These two words genuinely sum up the actions taken in the process of life In this post humanist world, that already believes that the life of a person is dependent on the outward agents like like fate , luck and supposedly God, still a humanist thought lurks that Man is the maker of his fate- that he can achieve and do things if he makes up his mind. And in this "doing" are involved the factors of ''Cause and Effect". There is always a reason and outcome of his actions. When William Wordsworth was asked, "what made you write poetry?", He had given the world one of the most famous definitions of poetry- "A Spontaneous overflow of powerful feelings, it takes its origin from emotion recollected in tranquility" As such, our brilliant authors too have answers that they have projected into stories and poems to deal with this age-old question- "What made you do it?"
