Book excerpt: This book is concerned with behaviour monitoring and interpretation with regard to two main areas of focus: the investigation of motion patterns and ambient assisted living. It presents state-of-the-art contributions on research in both these areas. The first section consists of chapters discussing recent developments in monitoring and representing behaviours, with a particular focus on movement-based behaviour. It includes: methods for monitoring and analysing pedestrian motion behaviours; typical motion patterns of single people and groups of people. In particular, a number of qualitative spatial representations are presented for describing patterns topologically and ordinally. The next part of the volume is more application-driven. Several case studies present the monitoring and support of people with cognitive impairments in smart environments, showing in particular how AI techniques are applied in these contexts and also how ambient assisted physical activity systems help to increase the engagement of seniors in physical activities. Investigations to show how monitored behaviours can be interpreted in smart environments are then described: a survey on knowledge-intensive methods for intention recognition; the detection of high-level daily activities by analysis of team behaviours in smart environments and a model for how ambient intelligence systems can automatically discover patterns of user behaviours. Finally, the publication discusses the infrastructure of smart environments.

This year we received submissions from 23 countries and 4 continents. Besides the inter- tional orientation, we made a major e?ort to include as many branches of AI as possible under the roof of the KI conference. A total of 21 area chairs represe- ing di?erent communities within the ?eld of AI selected further members of the program committee and helped the local organizers to acquire papers. The new approach appealed to the AI community: we had 126 submissions, which cons- tuted an increase of more than 50%, and which resulted in 14 parallel sessions on the following topics agents and intelligent virtual environments AI and engineering automated reasoning cognition evolutionary computation Robotics experience and knowledge management history and philosophical foundations knowledge representation and reasoning machine learning and mining natural language processing planning and scheduling spatial and temporal reasoning vision and perception o?ering cutting edge presentations and discussions with leading experts. This meeting was the start of successful research on cognitive issues in geographic information science, produced an edited book (D. M. Mark and A. U. Frank, Eds., 1991, Cognitive and Linguistic Aspects of Geographic Space. NATO ASI Series D: Behavioural and Social Sciences 63. Kluwer, Dordrecht/Boston/London), and led to a biannual conference (COSIT), a refereed journal (Spatial Cognition and Computation), and a substantial and still growing research community. It appeared worthwhile to assess the achievements and to reconsider the research challenges twenty years later. What has changed in the age of computational ontologies and cyber-infrastructures? Consider that 1990 the web was only about to emerge and the very first laptops had just appeared! The 2010 meeting brought together many of the original participants, but was also open to others, and invited contributions from all who are researching these topics. Early-career scientists, engineers, and humanists working at the intersection of cognitive science and geographic information science were invited to help with the re-assessment of research needs and approaches. The meeting was very successful and compared the research agenda laid out in the 1990 book with achievements over the past twenty years and then turned to the future: What are the challenges today? What are worthwhile goals for basic research? What can be achieved in the next 20 years? What are the lessons learned? This edited book will assess the current state of the field through chapters by participants in the 1990 and 2010 meetings and will also document an interdisciplinary research agenda for the future.
