Book excerpt: The objective of this investigation was to study experimentally the elastic behavior of horizontally oriented, stiff cylinders buried at shallow depths in dense, dry sand and subjected to static surface overpressures. Static tests were conducted on nine different cylinders in the U.S. Army Engineer Waterways Experiment Station's Small (4-foot-diameter) Blast Load Generator (SBLG). The cylinders were fabricated from steel mechanical tubing having a 6-inch outside diameter and a specially isolated 12-inch-long test section. The nine test specimens comprised three groups of cylinders with wall thicknesses of 1/8, 1/4, and 3/8 inch that corresponded to stiffnesses (EI/R3) of 170, 1,644, and 5,926 psi, respectively. In order to study the effects of burial depth, the first, second, and third cylinders of each group were tested at depths of 3, 6, and 9 inches, respectively. A total of 14 static tests were conducted, 9 on virgin soil samples and 5 on samples that had been previously loaded. The peak surface overpressure attained for all tests was approximately 1,000 psi. Measurements were made of cylinder hoop strain, vertical diameter change, soil stress, and surface overpressure. (Modified author abstract).

Book excerpt: The general objective of the investigation was to study experimentally the behavior to failure of flexible, horizontally oriented cylinders buried at various depths in dense, dry sand and subjected to either static or dynamic surface overpressures. Static and dynamic tests were conducted on 33 different cylinders, fabricated of high-yield-strength aluminum. Results indicated that collapse of the cylinders occurred while the strains in the cylinder walls were still in the elastic range. The cylinders buried at the shallow depths (zero to one-half cylinder diameter above the crown) collapsed by a catastrophic snap-through or caving of the crown. For the cylinders buried at depths of three-quarters to two cylinder diameters above the crown, the mode of collapse was an instantaneous elastic buckle that occurred at the spring line or invert of the cylinder. The collapse mode of the cylinders under dynamic overpressure was similar to that of the cylinders collapsing under static overpressure. The results of the investigation verified the applicability of an equation for predicting the static collapse overpressure for smooth-walled, horizontally oriented, buried cylindrical structures and entranceways. The hoop-compression theory was found to be applicable for analyzing the structural design to determine if the cylinder would collapse in the elastic range. (Author).

Book excerpt: Much of the infrastructure of modern society is buried below ground. Pipeline, conduits and culverts carry the services on which our economies depend and the strength and resilience of such structures is of vital importance. Larger underground construction is becoming more common in cities and towns, and in defence installations. This book brings t

Book excerpt: The results of the study indicate that there are certain regimes where the elastic theory could be used to determine the dynamic magnification factors. Further, elastic theory does not appear to be applicable over the entire pressure domain nor does it appear to predict the location of the maximum strain. A majority of the observed phenomena may be explained by the fact that the static transmissibility of the soil increases in higher pressure regions and by the fact that the dynamic transmissibility is higher than the static for the low pressure regions. Both the static and dynamic transmissibilities seem to converge in the higher pressure regions. (Author).

Book excerpt: Experimental and theoretical results are given that provide information on the influence of soil properties on the behavior of buried cylinders whose axes are parallel to the surface. Sand type, sand density, and cylinder stiffness were varied in 12 static tests on 5-inch-diameter thin-metal cylinders. The stiffness of these cylinders was less than that of others in the literature for which complete information on soil properties was available. The main contribution of the research presented is that it provides a unified method for determining deflections and the critical buckling load, both of which are based on the one-dimensional confined compression modulus measured in a standard laboratory test. This has not been done heretofore. Also, a relation for arching across buried cylinders is given which permits computation of the thrust at the haunches. Another feature of the work is the development of a matrix solution for determining the interface pressure distribution from measurements of strains in the cylinder. Thus, in effect, the cylinders can be used as biaxial soil pressure sensors. (Author).

Book excerpt: The general objective of this investigation was to study experimentally the behavior to failure of flexible, horizontally oriented circular tubes buried at various depths in dense, dry sand and subjected to dynamic surface overpressures. Dynamic tests were conducted on ten brass tubes in the Small Blast Load Generator. The tubes had a wall thickness of 0.005 inch, an outside diameter of 4 inches, and a specially isolated 5.75-inch-long test section. The tubes were flexible and had a stiffness EI/R3 of 0.018 psi. To examine the effect of depth of burial, tests were conducted in dense, dry sand at depths ranging from 1 to 16 inches, or four tube diameters above the crown. The dynamic tests were conducted at overpressures ranging from 6.2 to 34.9 psi. Measurements were made of the applied overpressure, and the tube deflection was recorded by means of a high-speed camera linked to the pressure-time base. Results indicate that collapse of the tubes was initiated by a buckle that occurred along a longitudinal seam where the tubes were spliced. The dynamic collapse overpressure increased greatly with increased depth of burial down to a depth of one tube diameter; subsequently, the increase in collapse overpressure with increase of burial depth to four tube diameters was insignificant. The dynamic collapse overpressure was approximately the same as the static collapse overpressure as determined from correlation with previously reported results. The results of this investigation have verified the applicability of an equation for predicting the dynamic collapse overpressure of very flexible tubes. (Author).

Book excerpt: This book is intended as a reference book for advanced graduate students and research engineers in rock mechanics related to civil, mining, hydropower, and traffic engineering, etc. For rock mass during construction, they are often subjected to complicated stress disturbance conditions, such as human-induced and environmental loading acting on rock that is cyclic or fatigue in nature. Typical forms of stress disturbance include excavation unloading, blasting vibration, earthquake, drilling and vehicle loading, etc. Usually, the stress disturbance condition is inferred as a kind of dynamic loading and differs dramatically from those under static loads. Along with the constructions on rock mass, a lot of disasters, e.g., tunnel rockburst, induced seismicity and sand liquefaction, are cyclic and dynamic processes. Nevertheless, insufficient attentions have been paid to the influences of disturbed stress on the long-term stability of rock mass construction so far. The discrepancy between theoretical prediction (by approximating the dynamic problems as static ones) and actual performance of constructed engineering structures is usually tolerated. As a result, investigation of the disturbed stress on rock is always vital to the rational design and the long-term stability prediction of rock constructions.
