To improve our understanding of the lateral load behavior of deep foundations in liquefied soil, a series of full-scale lateral load tests were performed at the National Geotechnical Experimentation Site (NGES) at Treasure Island in San Francisco, California. The ultimate goal of the TILT project was to develop lateral load-displacement relationships for a variety of individual piles and pile groups in liquefied sand under full-scale conditions. The tests were carried out using a high-speed hydraulic loading system after the sand surrounding the piles was liquefied using blasting techniques. This report presents backcalculated p-y curves for single pipe piles, pile groups, and cast-in-steel shell piles before and during liquefaction, as well as through dissipation of excess pore water pressures. In addition, recommendations with regard to design of deep foundations in liquefied soil are presented.

Book excerpt: Field tests were performed to study the horizontal load-displacement characteristics of natural soil deposits and to associate these characteristics with the behavior of laterally loaded piles. The ultimate objective of the tests was to acquire information essential for the design of laterally loaded soil-supported structures. Three soil conditions were considered: (1) bay mud with a desiccated crust in its natural dry state, (2) bay mud submerged within the area of testing, and (3) a hydraulic fill of granular material classified as SP by the unified soil classification system. Segmental pile tests were performed with three sizes of laterally loaded segments and at various depths below ground surface in the bay mud. (Similar tests in the hydraulic fill were covered in a previous NCEL report.) Lateral load tests on full-scale piles from 4 to 16 inches in diameter were performed at each test site. Theoretical information, available soil data, and results of the segmental pile tests were compared and combined to establish representative lateral load-displacement relationships for the soil at any depth at the three sites by using rectangular hyperbolas. Theoretical predictions of the response of laterally loaded piles were made using these relationships, and the results were compared with data obtained during the lateral load tests on piles. Experimental data and theoretical predictions compared favorably. (Author).

This is particularly important for piles at the abutments of bridges. However, limited full-scale test data are available to indicate how the lateral resistance of a pile would be affected when it is located near the crest of a slope. To investigate the effect of a slope on lateral pile resistance, three full scale lateral load tests were conducted on an instrumented steel pipe pile. For the first test, the pile was laterally loaded in horizontal ground. For the second test the pile was at the crest of a 30 degree slope and in the third test the pile was placed three diameters behind the crest of the 30 degree slope. The soil around the pile consisted of clean sand compacted to about 95% of the modified Proctor maximum unit weight for all three tests. Laboratory and in-situ direct shear tests indicated that the friction angle of the sand was approximately 39 degrees. The pile was instrumented with strain gages at approximately 1.5 ft intervals along its length so that the bending moment versus depth profile could be determined. Pile head load, deflection, and rotation were also measured. Based on the results, the presence of the slope decreased the ultimate lateral resistance of the pile-soil system by approximately 25% and 10% for tests two and three, respectively. The presence of the slope also resulted in an increase in the maximum bending moment of approximately 40% and 30% for tests two and three, respectively. Analyses using LPILE matched the lateral resistance for the pile in horizontal ground, but significantly overestimated the decrease in resistance due to the sloping ground. A mathematical model was developed to predict the ultimate strength of a pile located some distance from the crest of a cohesionless sloping profile. Parametric test results using the model were within 2.6 % of the measured results of tests two and three.

These soils do not conveniently fall into any specific soil types of sand or clay and there are not yet generally accepted procedures for the design and analysis of piled foundations where lateral loads are comprised predominantly in these soils. In-situ cone penetration test (CPT) provides continuous profile data of the soils in question. Utilizing the cone data for design parameters for the lateral piled foundations has increasingly attracted interests.This thesis investigates the lateral response of single piles in cemented sand and weak rock. The geotechnical behavior of the soils across a wide range from very weakly-cemented sands to well-cemented sands has been studied through a series of laboratory testing programs and in-situ testing programs. Full-scale lateral load experiments were performed with fully instrumented drilled and grout piles in a weak calcareous sandstone deposit at Pinjar, North West Perth in Western Australia. Centrifuge-scale load tests were also carried out on model piles preinstalled in very weakly-cemented sands artificially prepared with varying cement contents. The results of the field test were used to develop the load transfer P-y relationships as well as the limiting transverse pressures Pu on piles for the well-cemented soils. The results of centrifuge model test in conjunction with finite element modelling were used to develop the lateral pressure-displacement P-y relationships and the limiting transverse pressures Pu for the very weakly-cemented soils. The field and centrifuge tests were modelled well using a hyperbolic P-y relationship and the obtained ultimate lateral resistance. Existing methods to estimate Pu and the formulations of P-y curves were also evaluated and conclusive comments made to the comparisons.The thesis then explores the potential of using CPT qc data directly for the design and analysis of laterally loaded piles. A simple CPT-based bi-linear p-y approximation for the lateral response is proposed. This formulation is shown to provide good predictions for lateral pile response in a variety of cemented deposits.

When liquefaction occurs, the skin friction around the deep foundation goes to zero in the liquefiable layer. As the pore pressures dissipate, the soil settles. As the soil settles, negative skin friction develops owing to the downward movement of the soil surrounding the pile. To investigate the magnitude of the skin friction along the shaft three driven piles, an H-pile, a closed end pipe pile, and a concrete square pile, were instrumented and used to measure soil induced load at a site near Turrell, Arkansas following blast-induced liquefaction. Measurements were made of the load in the pile, the settlement of the ground and the settlement of piles in each case. Estimates of side friction and end-bearing resistance were obtained from Pile Driving Analyzer (PDA) measurements during driving and embedded O-cell type testing.
