Book excerpt: Adjacent precast, prestressed concrete box girders are widely used in short and medium span bridges in North America. Adjacent box girders are connected at their interface using partial- or full-depth grouted shear keys. Typically, transverse post-tensioning (TPT) is applied through diaphragms at discrete locations along the bridge span to improve the transverse load distribution and control differential deflections. Nevertheless, diaphragms only reduce the differential deflection between girders and do not eliminate it. In addition, the provision of transverse diaphragms is associated with an increased cost and time. The main objective of this research program is to investigate the feasibility of eliminating the transverse diaphragms by applying TPT in the top flange of the girders. The effect of applying TPT in the top flange of the girders, instead of being accommodated in discrete rigid diaphragms, on the transverse load distribution is studied. The research program comprised two phases: experimental and numerical. The experimental phase consisted of four different tests on a one-third scale bridge model, (1) Strain distribution test - uncracked shear key, (2) Load distribution test - uncracked shear key, (3) Load distribution test - cracked shear key, and (4) Ultimate load test. On the other hand, the numerical phase included the construction of a finite element model (FEM) to validate the experimental results of the tested bridge. The validated FEM was then used to study the influence of varying several parameters including the presence of concrete topping, wheel load location and the width of the bridge on the transverse load distribution behavior of box girder bridges. Results demonstrated the efficiency of distributing the TPT force at a shorter spacing along the length of the bridge in producing the minimum required concrete prestress. In addition, the influence of TPT force and spacing on the transverse load distribution behavior was found insignificant during the simulated service condition (fully-intact or partially-cracked shear keys). However, at failure, the presence of TPT added redundancy to the bridge model and mitigated any sudden failure when shear keys were fully cracked. Furthermore, the presence of concrete topping reduced mid-span deflection up to 25%.

Book excerpt: This book explores the fundamentals of the elastic behaviour of erected precast segmental box girders (SBG) when subjected to static load, as well as the construction process (casting and erection work) involved. It analyzes and compares the experimental results with those obtained using the finite element method and theoretical calculations. A short-term deflection analysis for different loads is obtained by determining the maximum deflection, stress and strain value of single span precast SBG under a variety of transversal slope. The outcome of this work provides a better understanding of the behaviour of precast SBG in terms of structural responses as well as defects, so that maintenance work can then be focused on the critical section at mid span area specifically for the bridge project longitudinally and transversely. The book is of interest to industry professionals involved in conducting static load tests on bridges, and all researchers, designers, and engineers seeking to validate experimental work with numerical and analytical approaches.

These measured losses were compared to predicted losses according to four sources. Prestress loss predictive methods considered for this research were: 1- AASHTO LRFD 2004, 2- AASHTO LRFD 2004 Refined, 3- AASHTO LRFD 2007, and 4- AASHTO LRFD Lump Sum method. On the other hand, the camber prediction methods used in the present research were: 1- Time dependent method described in NCHRP Report 496, 2- PCI multiplier method, and 3- Improved PCI Multiplier method. For the purpose of this research, long-term prestress losses were monitored in select girders from Bridge 669 located near Farmington, Utah. Bridge 669 is a three-span prestress concrete girder bridge. The three spans have lengths of 132.2, 108.5, and 82.2 feet long, respectively. Eleven AASHTO Type VI precast prestressed girders were used to support the deck in each span. The deflection of several girders from a three-span, prestressed, precast concrete girder bridge was monitored for 3 years. Fifteen bridge girders were fabricated for the three span-bridge. Ten girders from the exterior spans had span length of 80 feet, and five girders from the middle span had span length of 137 feet. From the results of this research, in both the 82- and 132-foot-long, the AASHTO LRFD 2004 Refined Method does a better job predicting the prestress loss and it can be concluded that all the prediction methods do a better job predicting the loss for the larger girders. The Lump Sum method predicted very accurately the long term prestress loss for the 132-foot-long girders.

Book excerpt: A decommissioned, adjacent precast, prestressed concrete box girder bridge constructed in 1967 was load tested to destruction in August and September of 2010. The bridge, which crossed Paint Creek approximately nine miles (14.5 km) northeast of Washington Court House, Ohio, consisted of three simple spans, each 47 ft. 10 in. (14.6 m) long. Each span was comprised of nine, 21 in. (533.4 mm) deep by 36 in. (914.4 mm) wide prestressed concrete box beams for a total width of up to 27 ft. 4 in. (8.3 m) with a 15° left-forward skew. Prior to testing, the bridge appeared to be in good condition, with the vast majority of deterioration limited to concrete spalling from the exterior webs of the fascia girders. Of the three spans tested, this thesis details testing and analysis of the first two. In addition to environmental deterioration, the first span was damaged by researchers, whereas no additional damage was done to the second. Loads were applied via three, 350 kip (1557 kN) hydraulic cylinders supported by steel load frames. Test data collected from pressure transducers, wire potentiometers, and strain gauges were compared to predictions from a reinforced concrete modeling program. Beam capacity and bridge distribution factors were compared to values calculated from the AASHTO LRFD Bridge Design Specifications. Data analysis shows that the response of the bridge was predicted well by the analysis program for both low-level destructive and ultimate destructive loads. It was determined that bridge capacity could be found by summing the capacity of each individual beam, as long as the calculated capacity is reduced for the effects of damage. The bridge maintained its ability to transmit load between girders even after cracking of shear keys, indicating that steel tie rods play a major role in transmitting load from one beam to the next.

Book excerpt: This report documents and presents results of a study to determine time-dependent behavior and relevant design criteria for simple-span precast, prestressed bridge girders made continuous. A questionnaire was used to determine current practice. Creep and shrinkage tests of steam-cured concrete loaded at an early age were made. Computer simulations were used to investigate the effects of time-dependent material behavior and variation in design parameters on the effective continuity for live load plus impact. The findings suggest that positive moment connections in the diaphragms at the piers are not required and provide no structural advantages. The findings also suggest that effective continuity for live load plus impact can vary from 0 to 100% dependent on the design parameters and timing of construction. Computer analyses were also used to determine an upper limit for the amount of negative moment reinforcement over the supports to insure full moment redistribution and attainment of maximum bridge strength. New computer programs were developed for simplified analysis to determine time-dependent effects and service moments. Recommendations for design procedures were presented and design examples given.
