Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Fourth Gospel is a political document. Although it has often been interpreted primarily as a “spiritual gospel,” it has much to offer readers engaged in the difficult task of negotiating life lived under the dominion of empire, whether in the first or twenty-first century. This book gives careful attention to the political dimensions of the Gospel’s Passion Narrative, including the arrest scene (18:1–12), the Roman show trial (18:28—19:16), and the crucifixion and burial of Jesus (19:16–40). It employs James C. Scott’s model of hidden transcripts and examines the Fourth Gospel’s use of irony as it seeks to understand the political dimensions of the Fourth Gospel and its relationship to the Roman Empire. In this book, Wright argues that the Passion Narrative displays part of a Johannine hidden transcript that resists, contests, and at times mimics elements of Roman imperial power. The Gospel mocks the representatives of Rome, including Pilate, the Roman soldiers, and the Jewish authorities, eroding confidence in the empire and its agents. It also subverts Roman imperial claims of dominance, authority, and power. As such, the Fourth Gospel fosters an alternative worldview and community, one centered on faith in the sovereignty of Jesus and Israel’s God.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Louisiana Governors is a one-volume reference work on the diverse, frequently colorful leaders of Louisiana since the eighteenth century. From Iberville to Edwards, this biographical directory provides a comprehensive look into the lives of sixty-six men who have wielded their political power in molding the history of the state. Joseph G. Dawson’s introduction sets the stage for this knowledgeable look at Louisiana’s governors by examining the historical evolution of the governorship over the past three centuries. Dawson focuses not only on the evolution of the office but also on the dominant personalities who have served it and the ever changing constitutions that have guided it. For the first time, students of Louisiana history will have at their disposal a chronological compilation of scholarly essays on the lives of the men who have served at Louisiana’s chief executive. Providing first a short biographical sketch of the governor under consideration, each essay includes an analytical discussion of the governor’s administration and of his role in the state’s history. A bibliography pertaining to the governor and his era follows each essay. The Louisiana Governors describes in rich detail the influence of French and Spanish colonial governors on Louisiana’s leaders of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. The rivalry that now exists between the chief executive and the legislature, as well as the factionalism that has surfaced in the political system, is directly rooted in the state’s colonial past. It has been said that Louisianians like their politicians like their food—hot and spicy. They have not been disappointed. From the Lemoyne brothers, Iberville and Bienville, of the French colonial era, to the Long brothers, Huey and Earl, of the twentieth century, Louisiana’s governors have attracted ardent loyalty and vigorous criticism simultaneously. They have been hailed by critics as dictators, political mavericks, puppets, and even rubber-stamp governors. But whether weak or powerful, charismatic or unimposing, these men have braved controversy and political turmoil to create a governorship steeped in tradition.

This book was released on 1858 with total page 478 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In December 1852, at the conclusion of the second Anglo-Burmese War, the British annexed the southern and coastal regions of Burma (known as Lower Burma). Pagan Min, and later his brother Mindon Min, continued to rule Upper Burma. In 1855, Arthur Phayre, the British commissioner for the annexed territories, visited the court of Ava in Upper Burma as part of an effort to improve relations with Mindon. Henry Yule was secretary to Phayre and accompanied him on the mission. This work, written by Yule, is a modified version of the mission's report, based on Phayre's journals and Yule's own observations and impressions. The work includes detailed maps and drawings, and remains an extraordinarily valuable source for the study of the history, geography, arts, religion, and culture of Burma. A long chapter is devoted to the ruins of the ancient city of Bagan (then known as Pagan) and its temples, as they were found by the mission in 1855.

Book excerpt: In this remarkable revisionist study, Webb shows that English imperial policy was shaped by a powerful and sustained militaristic, autocratic tradition that openly defined English empire as the imposition of state control by force on dependent people. He describes the entire military connection that found expression in the garrisoned cities of England, Scotland, and Ireland and ultimately in the palisaded plantations of Jamaica, Virginia, and New England.
