Book excerpt: Excerpt from Beethoven's Seventh Symphony This noble work Opens with an introduction, Poeo sostemito, far surpassing in dimensions, as well as in breadth and grandeur of style, those of the First, Second, and even Fourth Symphonies, the only oth ers of the immortal nine which exhibit that feature. This introduction is a wonderfully grand, impressive movement, and may be compared to a vast and stately portico or hall, leading to the great galleries, corridors, and apartments of a magnificent palace. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Symphony Since Beethoven IF in wandering through some Alpine valley, while we were standing awestruck before a colossal mountain, whose snow - crowned peak rose shim mering in the distance, and we were perhaps deem ing that man happy whose courage and strength were great enough to carry him over this peak to enjoy the view beyond, when suddenly our medi tations were interrupted by a voice at our side saying in all seriousness, I am going to climb over that mountain into the blue clouds beyond, we would have little doubt but that we were con fronted either by a foolhardy dreamer or a mad man. We would scarcely ridicule the man, but rather look upon his simple faith with eyes of pity. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. This book was released on 2017-12-03 with total page 222 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from On the Performance of Beethoven's Symphonies It is true that this state of things may be improved by instrumental changes; but unless those changes are conducted with the utmost prudence and good taste, there is great danger lest the most important thing of all, Beethoven's own peculiar style, may suffer; for, in spite of the indisputable imperfections mentioned above, Beethoven's handling of the orchestra is so entirely peculiar to himself, that the greatest caution is necessary if it is to be in any way interfered with. Book Synopsis The Post-Beethoven Symphonists by : Felix Weingartner
Download or read book The Post-Beethoven Symphonists written by Felix Weingartner and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-04 with total page 244 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Post-Beethoven Symphonists: The Symphony Writers Since Beethoven It will be impossible in reading this edition to make such a mistake as to think that I do not believe in a possibility of the development of the symphony, or that I am a prejudiced ad vocate of the cause of programme music versus the symphony; it is even difiicult to see how such a deduction could be drawn from the previous edition. Another objection made to the original book was that I had dis missed as unworthy of notice the names of several prominent composers. In Paris especially, where my treatise has become known through the medium of Madame Chevillard's translation, was this reproach made against me. Although this time I have mentioned more names than before, still even now those of many deserving men are left out. The book is not a register or dictionary of living or dead composers, and so the exactness and amplitude of such a work must not be expected from it. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Life of Beethoven Although on appearing for the first time as the editor of a literary publication, my feelings may be somewhat like those of a child putting on a new dress, yet I feel the responsibility of my position far more than its novelty; for the subject of my first essay is one not to be approached by me, at least, without seriousness and reverence. That the amount, however, of this editorial responsibility may be thought neither greater nor less than it really is, I must beg leave to state my precise share in this publication, and to advert to the qualifications with which I have entered on my task. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Beethoven and His Nine Symphonies Tms book is addressed to the amateurs of this country, who have so immensely increased during the last fifty years with the increase of good and cheap p'erformances - a movement headed by the Crystal Palace, under the wise and able direction of Mr. Manns. In short, it is a humble endeavour to convey to others the method in which an amateur has obtained much pleasure and profit out of works which in their own line are as great as Shakespeare's plays. It would be presumptuous in me to, attempt to interest professional musicians, who naturally know already all that I have been able to put together, and much more; and in a more complete and accurate manner. This book was released on 2018-01-29 with total page 132 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Beethoven's Symphonies Critically Discussed While admitting that the author has at times been carried away by his exuberant fancy, it is impossible to deny that he possesses in a very high degree those powers Of analysis without which it is impossible to do justice to, or even approximately to understand, Beethoven. Music is verily the language Of the soul - higher, finer, more delicate in its methods, and more ethereal in its results, than anythirig to which the tongue can give utterance, expressing what speech cannot speak, and affecting, as no mere talking can, the invisible player who manipu lates the keyboard of the human intellect, and whom we call 17713 Saul. Music is truly Of such a nature, and appeals so powerfully and mysteriously to that soul, that the words Of Jean Paul seem quite justified. Book excerpt: Excerpt from BeethovenIn this translation effect has been given not only to certain corrections made in the second German edition of my book, but also to a number of further additions and alterations that seemed to me of importance. I take this opportunity of thanking the translator for the great care and pains he has devoted to his difficult task, and for his readiness to comply with the various wishes I expressed during several weeks' collaboration with him. My especial thanks are due to Mr Alan Bush, Pro fessor of Harmony and Composition at the Royal Academy of Music, for his valuable help in the rendering of a number of technical terms - in particular of certain words that are the same, but have a different meaning, in English and German, and are, indeed, not always free from ambiguity in either language. I hope and believe that it has been possible in each case to render precisely the meaning I attach to these terms.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Synopsis Beethoven's Symphonies: An Artistic Vision by : Lewis Lockwood
Download or read book Beethoven's Symphonies: An Artistic Vision written by Lewis Lockwood and published by W. W. Norton & Company. This book was released on 2015-10-26 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “[Beethoven’s] music never grows old— and, enjoyed alongside Mr. Lockwood’s expert commentary, it sparkles with fresh magic.”—Wall Street Journal More than any other composer, Beethoven left to posterity a vast body of material that documents the early stages of almost everything he wrote. From this trove of sketchbooks, Lewis Lockwood draws us into the composer’s mind, unveiling a creative process of astonishing scope and originality. For musicians and nonmusicians alike, Beethoven’s symphonies stand at the summit of artistic achievement, loved today as they were two hundred years ago for their emotional cogency, variety, and unprecedented individuality. Beethoven labored to complete nine of them over his lifetime—a quarter of Mozart’s output and a tenth of Haydn’s—yet no musical works are more iconic, more indelibly stamped on the memory of anyone who has heard them. They are the products of an imagination that drove the composer to build out of the highest musical traditions of the past something startlingly new. Lockwood brings to bear a long career of studying the surviving sources that yield insight into Beethoven’s creative work, including concept sketches for symphonies that were never finished. From these, Lockwood offers fascinating revelations into the historical and biographical circumstances in which the symphonies were composed. In this compelling story of Beethoven’s singular ambition, Lockwood introduces readers to the symphonies as individual artworks, broadly tracing their genesis against the backdrop of political upheavals, concert life, and their relationship to his major works in other genres. From the first symphonies, written during his emerging deafness, to the monumental Ninth, Lockwood brings to life Beethoven’s lifelong passion to compose works of unsurpassed beauty.
Book Synopsis Beethoven's Fifth and Seventh Symphonies by : David Hurwitz
Download or read book Beethoven's Fifth and Seventh Symphonies written by David Hurwitz and published by Continuum. This book was released on 2008-10 with total page 152 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Composers often write pieces in highly contrasting moods in very close proximity. But no composer took this process further than Beethoven. His famous Fifth Symphony, with an opening any child knows, became the standard for the Romantic, tragedy to triumph, "victory symphony." The sunny Seventh however represents a high-water mark of relaxed lyricism and painting in tones. On a superficial listening, they couldn't sound more different from one another. Yet by examining them more closely, they have more in common than their emotional trajectories might suggest. This book aids the listener in getting beneath the surface of these two beloved symphonies, revealing that however disparate the expressive message, the language and style remain Beethoven's--a symphonic voice as powerful in struggle and victory as in relaxation and meditation.
