Book excerpt: Excerpt from How to Keep Bees Since the first edition of this bulletin was issued in 1911, there has been a considerable development in bee-keeping in Rhode Island; as well as other states, and the prospects are bright for a healthy and steady growth in the future. People generally are learning more and more to use and appreciate honey as a food and the demand is therefore growing. The possibility of keeping and tending a few swarms of bees to produce honey for home use even in small back yards, is becoming more fully known and the profitableness of larger ventures in the production of market honey is also being established. While some of this development is due to an increase of interest in all lines of agriculture, and especially in such ventures to help reduce the high cost of living, which can be pursued on limited areas, such as a small back yard, nevertheless, I believe that a considerable part of it in Rhode Island comes as a result of the educational campaign carried on by Mr. Miller, under the auspices of the State Board of Agriculture through such publications as this bulletin, through lectures and through visits and demonstations in connection with the administration of the Apiary Inspection Law. Before the advent of this work, bee-keepers had frequent disastrous experiences due to bee diseases, insect pests and a general lack of knowledge of bee-keeping which discouraged many of those already in the business and kept otters from attempting to enter the field. Mr. Miller has been able in connection with his inspection work to demonstrate how to effectively deal with most of the troubles with which the bee-keeper must cope and make bee-keeping an assured success instead of a partial or complete failure. The only information available concerning the industry in the State was that given by the Census of 1900. It was there stated that farmers in Maryland had reported colonies. These bees produced in 1899, pounds of honey and pounds of wax, valued at Few people are aware that the industry amounted even to this much, as it had not been promoted in any organized manner, and even the few individual expert bee keepers had not properly advertised their business. There are a few apiaries on the island, located in the mountainous district of Ponce and m Mayaguez; a few others are scattered over the island, but there is no area which could be considered over-stocked. There are extensive acreages where Italian bees cannot be found. Native hives have been used, but now some of the bee-keepers are transferring their stock to the standard hive and are raising Italian bees. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Southern Bee Culture I had to brace it with two sticks to keep it from tumbling over. I made some crude movable-frame hives (for I had not yet seen a patent movable; frame hive). With this outfit I began bee - keeping anew, studying them by handling them on their combs. My bee business began to grow; and after keeping bees thus for several years I heard of a bee-keeper who had bought some patent factory made hives. I paid him a visit at once, and I saw that the hives were just what I needed, so I bought a lot of them Next season I transferred my bees into them. From the old crude hives I transfered bees and what I had on hand extra, furnished me fuel during the summer and following winter. From the old decayed box hive my bee business has spread until bee keeping is my business or sole occupation. Besides establishing five apiaries of my own around in this section (as many bees as I can give proper atten tion to), I have furnished foundation stock from which many apiaries have been established in various sections of the South from the old mother hives. The ups and downs I had during this time, I have not space to describe in this small volume. If there is such a thing as a man being called to do certain work, I have been called to the field of bee culture, for I feel out of my calling at any thing else. Although I have mastered no little at eight other occupations, yet I feel more as if I am at my allotted work when I am among my bees than I do at any other of my trades. I have applied myself to bee-keeping in almost every conceivable man ner, keeping colonies of bees in glass hives in my bedroom and on my ver anda, keeping close and constant watch on them by day and by night. I have operated bees successfully and extensively for extracted chunk and comb honey m sections; I have traveled to and fro across the South, investi gating bee-keeping and the honey-plants in many sections; and if I did not know that there is a great future for the bee and honey industry here I would not attempt to write this book. While methods' of apiary work and bee-keeping differ m sections and locations, I hope to give you at least some practical thoughts along bee-keeping in your own location. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Beekeeping: A Discussion of the Life of the Honeybee and of the Production of Honey It has seemed desirable in the early chapters to discuss bees as they exist without man's interference, thus giving the foun dation on which the practice of. Beekeeping rests. The bee keeper is not especially interested in the anatomy of the bee and, while it is necessary to use illustrations of various organs and to describe them briefly, an effort has been made to treat the bee as a living animal and to have the discussion deal with physiology and especially with activities, in so far as investi gations have thrown light on these processes. In the prepara tion of the chapters devoted to the management of the apiary, an effort has been made to present the various systems of manipulations in such a way that the underlying principles shall be evident, rather than to attempt to describe each sys tem as if it were separate. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Beekeeping for West Virginia The keeping of bees dates back in history as one of the first occupa tions of man. Rude carvings of the bee upon the tombs of the ancient Egyptians; the presence of honey among the trinkets of the mummied inhabitants as well as honey being mentioned in the Bible as a sus tainer of life, indicates that the honey bee was held in high esteem by the people of that time. Honey was regarded a necessity as a food requirement for many centuries and remained as such within two or three generations of the present time. Bees were included among other live stock introduced in New England in 1638 during the colonization period of that section of America. During the Pioneer period of this state beekeeping was an important factor in every settlement. Honey and maple sugar in limited quantities were the only sources of sweets, depending largely upon the abundance of maple trees in the section settled. With the removal of the forest for agri cultural purposes, maple trees were not spared so in some sections it became necessary to depend entirely upon the bees to supply the required sugar which is a necessity in all food require ments of the human body. Owing to the crude conditions under which bees were kept, swarming was intense and many swarms escaped to the forest. As years passed the wild colonies multiplied and with the addition of more swarms every year from the colonists apiaries the bees penetrated further and further in the new pastures. The movement of bees into new territory was at a greater rate than that of man which is clearly pointed out by the pioneers of this state finding bees present in the forests. Early beekeeping was very simple, new swarms issuing during the swarming season were placed in hollow logs and were forgotten until fall when the bees in those gums hav ing the greatest amount of honey were killed. The returns were of rather poor quality, usually being more or less of a mixture of honey, pollen or bee-bread, dead bees, and brood. Nevertheless it was relished by all, for sugar which is now common, was unknown. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. It has five yellow bands instead of three - practically the whole of the abdomen is yellow. Bees of this variety are more susceptible to cold and wet than the three banded Italians and rather predisposed to bee-paralysis. Italians, when pure, do not cap their combs so white as black bees do, and are therefore less suitable for the production of comb honey. A little delay at such times may spell, failure. Poor seasons intervene when colonies will have to be fed to take them through the winter and it may need a good deal Of enthusiasm on the part of the beekeeper to keep up his Courage. These seasons, however, do not occur very Often and the practical beekeeper knows that he must make the best Of them.
