Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Hive Bee: A Manual of Beekeeping for Hawaii The hive bee is a familiar example of an insect under domestication. The history of its domestication is lost in antiquity; for the art of bee culture has been known since the earliest times. In the wild state bees range the woods, nesting in hollow trees, in crevices in rocks or in any place that will afford them protection, often in the most inaccessible places. Searching for these nests in order to plunder their stores of honey constitutes a favorite pastime in the countryside. This method of procuring the bees products, however, is wasteful and uncertain. The bee has small place in human economy until its cultivation as a domestic animal insures a lively and continued interest. Under domestication the bee has received considerable attention. Its cultivation among the historical peoples dwelling on the shores of the Mediterranean has led to the recognition of well-marked races, from different characteristics of size, color, behavior, etc., and some improvement in quality of the different races has been made through the application of well known principles of breeding. As a domestic animal also it has been carried with the stream of human migration to practically all parts of the earth. The German or black race of bees was the one commonly propagated by the early beekeepers and received a wide distribution; but more recently the superiority of the Italian or golden race has become recognized and it is now largely replacing the German bee. The early spread of the black bee is deplored by many beekeepers on account of the trouble it gives when they attempt to maintain pure breeds of the golden races. The principal characteristics of the Italian bee are its high color, great energy and peculiar gentleness. To say, however, that modern ideas of progress in bee-farming must inevitably rob the pursuit of all its old-world poetry and picturesqueness would be to represent the case in an unnecessarily bad light. The latter-day beehive, it is true, has little more aesthetic value than a Brighton bathing-machine; and the new class of bee-keepers, which is springing up all over the country, is composed mainly of people who have taken to the calling as they would to any other lucrative business, having, for the most part, nothing but a good-humoured contempt alike for the old-fashioned bee-keeper and the ancient traditions and superstitions of his craft. Nor can the inveterate, old-time skeppist himself - the man who obstinately shuts his eyes to all that is good and true in modern bee-science - be counted on to help in the preservation of the beautiful old gardens, or in keeping alive customs which have been handed down from generation to generation, almost unaltered, for literally thousands of years. Here and there, in the remoter parts of the country, men can still be found who keep their bees much in the same way as bees were kept in the time of Columella or Virgil; and are content with as little profit. But these form a rapidly diminishing class. The advantages of modern methods are too overwhelmingly apparent. Although the trees present a great bulk to hurricane winds of high velocity, experience in the East Indies has shown that even when blown over they seldom die. Logical regional planning would seem to indicate that mangoes could more safely be grown in some of our steep-sided valleys where they may attain some degree of protection from hurricane winds. Producers' cooperatives seem important for such new crops. The profitable production of truck crops for winter marketing is dependent upon the most competent technical knowledge for field management as well as alert representation in the continental markets. The production of other crops has shown the necessity of increased technical knowledge. The small producers of Puerto Rico individually have not been in a position to have market representation or obtain through experience the technical knowledge necessary for successful truck-crop or other specialized production. In this situation it would seem essential to form cooperative associations in which technical men would be employed to guide production methods, packing, and ship ping, as well as provide expert market representation. Weed control in the first years of a forest plantation is an important problem in commercial plantation development in Puerto Rico. A general guide (8) to weed control gives the following instructions: Clean planting area free of weeds before planting, then clean three or four times within the first year after planting, two or three times the second year, one or two times the third year, and perhaps once during the fourth or fifth year. To clean means to make weed free coronas, circular areas two or three feet in diameter, or alleys three or four feet wide. Coronas are suitable for maintenance after planting, while alleys serve for both site preparation and post-planting care. Cleaning is done with machetes or herbicides, or both, depending upon local conditions and individual judgement. It is sometimes recommended, if there is heavy sod, to use a mattock or hoe to scrape a smaller sod-free corona. For example, most fruit, vegetable, and seed crops and some crops that provide fiber, drugs, and fuel depend on animals for pollination. This report provides evidence for the decline of some pollinator species in North America, including America's most important managed pollinator, the honey bee, as well as some butterflies, bats, and hummingbirds. For most managed and wild pollinator species, however, population trends have not been assessed because populations have not been monitored over time. In addition, for wild species with demonstrated declines, it is often difficult to determine the causes or consequences of their decline. This report outlines priorities for research and monitoring that are needed to improve information on the status of pollinators and establishes a framework for conservation and restoration of pollinator species and communities.
