Bedford County was the ?mother? of present-day Bedford, Blair, Cambria, Fulton, Huntingdon and Somerset Counties. This book has a three-fold purpose. The first is to provide a history of the Blair County Chapter of the Pennsylvania Society of the Sons of the American Revolution; The Blair County Chapter encompasses the region that includes Bedford, Blair, Fulton and Huntingdon Counties, Pennsylvania. In addition to the general history of the chapter, all members of the Blair County Chapter, past and present, are listed with genealogical information tracing their lineage back to all their proven Patriot ancestors. The second purpose is to provide a history of the Somerset-Cambria Chapter of the Pennsylvania Society of the Sons of the American Revolution. As its name implies, the Somerset-Cambria Chapter includes those two counties. As in the case of the Blair County Chapter section, this section includes a general history of the chapter along with information on its members, past and present. This book will be of value to anyone with ancestors from this region who might be interested in joining the Sons of the American Revolution or Daughters of the American Revolution. Mother Bedford?contains the most extensive listing ever published of the Patriots? war service. Also included are references to the Hessians buried within the region. Written by Larry D. Smith who serves as the Historian for the Blair County Chapter and who has spent a number of years researching the subject of the American Revolutionary War, the third purpose of the volume is to provide the most complete and accurate history, to date, of Bedford County?s participation and role in the American Revolutionary War. Download or read book Taming Democracy written by Terry Bouton and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2007-07-12 with total page 344 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Americans are fond of reflecting upon the Founding Fathers, the noble group of men who came together to force out the tyranny of the British and bring democracy to the land. Unfortunately, as Terry Bouton shows in this highly provocative first book, the Revolutionary elite often seemed as determined to squash democracy after the war as they were to support it before. Centering on Pennsylvania, the symbolic and logistical center of the Revolution, Bouton shows how this radical shift in ideology spelled tragedy for hundreds of common people. Leading up to the Revolution, Pennsylvanians were united in their opinion that "the people" (i.e. white men) should be given access to the political system, and that some degree of wealth equality (i.e. among white men) was required to ensure that political freedom prevailed. As the war ended, Pennsylvania's elites began brushing aside these ideas, using their political power to pass laws to enrich their own estates and hinder political organization by their opponents. By the 1780s, they had reenacted many of the same laws that they had gone to war to abolish, returning Pennsylvania to a state of economic depression and political hegemony. This unhappy situation led directly to the Whiskey and Fries rebellions, popular uprisings both put down by federal armies. Bouton's work reveals a unique perspective, showing intimately how the war and the events that followed affected poor farmers and working people. Bouton introduces us to unsung heroes from this time--farmers, weavers, and tailors who put their lives on hold to fight to save democracy from the forces of "united avarice." We also get a starkly new look at some familiar characters from the Revolution, including Benjamin Franklin, Alexander Hamilton, and George Washington, who Bouton strives to make readers see as real, flawed people, blinded by their own sense of entitlement. Taming Democracy represents a turning point in how we view the outcomes of the Revolutionary War and the motivations of the powerful men who led it. Its eye-opening revelations and insights make it an essential read for all readers with a passion for uncovering the true history of America.

Book Synopsis Redemption from Tyranny by : Bruce E. Stewart
Download or read book Redemption from Tyranny written by Bruce E. Stewart and published by University of Virginia Press. This book was released on 2020-02-04 with total page 312 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For many common people, the American Revolution offered an opportunity to radically reimagine the wealth and power structures in the nascent United States. Yet in the eyes of working-class activists, the U.S. Constitution favored the interests of a corrupt elite and betrayed the lofty principles of the Declaration of Independence. The discontent of these ordinary revolutionaries sparked a series of protest movements throughout the country during the 1780s and 1790s. Redemption from Tyranny explores the life of a leader among these revolutionaries. A farmer, evangelical, and political activist, Herman Husband (1724-1795) played a crucial role in some of the most important anti-establishment movements in eighteenth-century America--the Great Awakening, the North Carolina Regulation, the American Revolution, and the Whiskey Rebellion. Husband became a famous radical, advocating for the reduction of economic inequality among white men. Drawing on a wealth of newly unearthed resources, Stewart uses the life of Husband to explore the varied reasons behind the rise of economic populism and its impact on society during the long American Revolution. Husband offers a valuable lens through which we can view how "labouring, industrious people" shaped--and were shaped by--the American Revolution.
