Book excerpt: Mikhail Lermontov's famous novel, "A Hero of our Time," was and remains one of the great literary achievements of the 19th century. Lermontov is considered to be the only true Romantic poet from Russia, and it is easy to see why after reading this book. He is greatly influenced by Byronism (a literary movement in Europe started by the Romantic poet George Gordon Lord Byron). In his work, Lermontov creates a character who encapsulates Byronic principles. Pechorin, Lermontov's protagonist, is a darker hero than most in Russian society are accustomed to. He is sensitive and cynical; he has great insight into his own personality and yet remains extremely arrogant. Pechorin is remarkably intelligent and prefers to rely on the certainty of intellect rather than the unpredictable nature of emotions. He is vain and ambitious but never content with his achievements. Once he sets out on a new adventure he easily gets bored with what he has accomplished and becomes depressed. He states "my imagination knows no peace, my heart no satisfaction." He specifically enjoys the challenge of conquering women. As time goes on however, he grows bored with the lovers he has seduced and treats them unkindly or just leaves them altogether. Throughout his journeys Pechorin is cruel to his lovers, rude to strangers, and even kills one of his friends in a duel sparked by a minor disagreement (showing little remorse afterwards). Perhaps Pechorin's contradictory personality is best summarized by the comment he makes to a friend about a lover: "I'm still in love with her. I'm grateful to her for a few moments of relative bliss. I'd give my life for her. But she bores me." Lermontov's creation of this morally corrupt protagonist sparked condemnation from many Russians upon its publication. Society was not comfortable with such a villainous character being hailed a hero as Lermontov clearly implies by the title of the book. In reaction to the criticism, Lermontov adds a preface in the book's second publication to explain that Pechorin "is a portrait of the vices of our whole generation in their ultimate development." He brilliantly points out that perhaps society is so fervently opposed to Pechorin because they secretly fear the realities in Pechorin's personality. Lermontov rhetorically asks "you will say that no man can be so bad, and I will ask you why, after accepting all the villains of tragedy and romance, you refuse to believe in Pechorin? You have admired far more terrible and monstrous characters than he is, so why are you so merciless to him, even as a fictitious character? Perhaps he comes too close to the bone?" Still today, Pechorin is a fascinating literary character and his personality is formed by the principles of Byronism.

Book excerpt: In its adventurous happenings–its abductions, duels, and sexual intrigues–A Hero of Our Time looks backward to the tales of Sir Walter Scott and Lord Byron, so beloved by Russian society in the 1820s and ’30s. In the character of its protagonist, Pechorin–the archetypal Russian antihero–Lermontov’s novel looks forward to the subsequent glories of a Russian literature that it helped, in great measure, to make possible.

Book Synopsis Lermontov's Narratives of Heroism by : Vladimir Golstein
Download or read book Lermontov's Narratives of Heroism written by Vladimir Golstein and published by Northwestern University Press. This book was released on 1998 with total page 266 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the first study of Russian writer Mikhail Lermontov (1814-41) that attempts to integrate the in-depth interpretations of all his major texts--including his famous A Hero of Our Time, the novel that laid the foundation for the Russian psychological novel. Lermontov's explorations of the virtues and limitations of heroic, self-reliant conduct have subsequently become obscured or misread. This new book focuses upon the peculiar, disturbing, and arguably most central feature of Russian culture: its suspicion of and hostility toward individual achievement and self-assertion. The analysis and interpretation of Lermontov's texts enables Golstein to address broader cultural issues by exploring the reasons behind the persistent misreading of Lermontov's major works and by investigating the cultural attitudes that shaped Russia's reaction to the challenges of modernity.

Book excerpt: Poet, cavalry officer, celebrity - Mikhail Lermontov moved in an atmosphere of political intrigue and personal recklessness, producing poetry considered second only to Pushkin's in Russian literature and a career which has often been compared to Byron's. Between the salons and palaces of St Petersburg and the savage splendour of the Caucasus - his country of marvels - Lermontov lived his brief life without compromise. Born in 1814, he is best known as the author of A Hero of our Time and The Demon. He managed to be both and neither. At odds wih authority, yet at ease on his own terms, he wrote as he fought, in protest and fierce independence and died in a duel at the age of 26. This biography is a popular study of the poet.

Book excerpt: "Inheritor of Pushkin's poetic mantle, and forerunner of the realism which was to make the Russian novel supreme in the nineteenth century, Mikhail Yurevich Lermontov represents one of the most important figures in the history of Russian prose and poetry. His was a life lived with singular intensity; his Byronic pose of disillusionment could not conceal an acute, often tortured sensibility, a sensibility that produced the scathing irony mirroring this profound social commitment. Killed in a duel before he reached the age of twenty-seven, Lermontov left a body of works whose brilliance and diversity are all the more remarkable for the short span of years during which they were written, and the amazing rate of artistic growth they record. As presented here, they stand as an essential volume for all those interested in Russian literature" --Back cover.

Book excerpt: The beautiful Circassian princess Bela is kidnapped by a man named Azamat, who trades her for a horse. She is taken to the home of Pechorin, a man who treats women as an incentive for endless conquests and does not consider them worthy of any particular respect. After living together for some time, Bela becomes completely devoted to Pechorin, but Pechorin starts explicating his need for freedom. Bela fears he may leave her, but is soon kidnapped once again by Pechorin's enemy, Kazbich. A Hero of Our Time is an example of the superfluous man novel, noted for its compelling antihero. Pechorin is a character of contradiction, both sensitive and cynical. His philosophy concerning existence is oriented towards the nihilistic, creating in him somewhat of a distanced, alienated personality. He is possessed of extreme arrogance, yet has a deep insight into his own character and epitomizes the melancholy of the Romantic hero who broods on the futility of existence and the certainty of death. This case laminate collector's edition includes a Victorian inspired dust-jacket.
