Book excerpt: Experience Mary Magdalene as a rising teacher in today's spiritual arena. Through 25 insightful messages, Mary focuses on issues that often aren't addressed by spiritual leaders -- uniting the Feminine and Masculine, healing body shame, the sacredness of sexuality, and emotional mastery -- explaining how these are essential for living in the heart. Mary's universal teaching, paired with the author's clarifying commentary, makes this award-winning book a treasure-trove of Feminine guidance and spiritual truths. Mary describes her partnership with Yeshua (Jesus) as loving equals, including being co-teachers for their shared work. Mary's role was to bring the Feminine aspect of their teaching, which they knew the world wouldn't be ready to receive for 2000 years. In sharing her long-hidden teaching, Mary shows us what it is to be a powerful, spiritual woman in complete union with her beloved male partner (Yeshua) and the Divine Masculine. MARY MAGDALENE BECKONS was birthed over a one month period, when Mary Magdalene came daily to author Mercedes Kirkel with her extraordinary messages. Kirkel soon realized Mary was downloading a book, chapter by chapter, with Mary and Yeshua as the inspiring models. Whether you're new to Mary Magdalene's path or a longtime admirer of hers, MARY MAGDALENE BECKONS is a gift to your soul. Book excerpt: The Spiritual Art of Abraham Rattner explores for the first time the life of an artist who captured his tremendous spirituality through his work. Rattner searched for a philosophy of "oneness" as he depicted religious scenes from both the Old and New Testaments as well as some secular scenes. He struggled with his own life as he compared himself with Abraham or the crucified Christ. His prayerful life was dominated by a hope for peace and an abhorrence for war and the suffering it carries with it. Henkes examines the presence of Rattner's ideas and views in his work, finding his suffering as well as his deep spirituality and love for humanity as expressed through the dominant figures of St. Francis of Assisi and Moses. Recommended for all students of art and religion.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In his praise for Part I of Upbuilding Discourses in Various Spirits, the eminent Kierkegaard scholar Eduard Geismar said, "I am of the opinion that nothing of what he has written is to such a degree before the face of God. Anyone who really wants to understand Kierkegaard does well to begin with it." These discourses, composed after Kierkegaard had initially intended to end his public writing career, constitute the first work of his "second authorship." Characterized by Kierkegaard as ethical-ironic, Part One, "Purity of Heart Is to Will One Thing," offers a penetrating discussion of double-mindedness and ethical integrity. Part Two, "What We Learn from the Lilies in the Field and from the Birds of the Air," humorously exposes an inverted qualitative difference between the learner and the teacher. In Part Three, "The Gospel of Sufferings, Christian Discourses," the philosopher explores how joy can come out of suffering.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Can the categories of classical Lutheran Christology be unleashed to express the vitality of christological existence, an existence situated between Promise and experience? If, as Martin Luther famously asserted in his Heidelberg Disputation (1518), "true theology and recognition of God are in the crucified Christ," then such a theological point of departure not only bore radical implications for his Christology, but indeed also bears profound significance for theological discussions around the Word of Promise, its structure, its experience, its plurality. With regard to the elaboration of the two natures of Jesus Christ, such a point of departure permits a delineation of Promise--"the body of Promise"--who is bound to, who suffers, the nihil of human existence. Which means: such a point of departure affords us equally the opportunity to consider and probe the implications of the nihil as the medium of both threat and Promise. Is this a promising threat? Or a threatening Promise? Ultimately, Promise is delineated from within hermeneutical origins--the christological function of Scripture, the text--and, developed through to its diverse expression as the body of Promise, translated into christological existence. Within this context, categories of classical Lutheran Christology begin to express new vitality. Along the way, the Word of Promise--as developed within the trajectory of Luther's theology of the cross and his radical delineation of the two natures of Jesus Christ--receives further sharpening within the context of discussion with such theological voices as John Caputo and Jacques Derrida, Hans Holbein the Younger, Albert Schweitzer, Matthias Grunewald, Carl Braaten, Karl Barth, Michael Welker, and Samuel Terrien. Ultimately, we are permitted to confess: There is one Crucified. And he is plural.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: George W. T. Beck, an influential rancher and entrepreneur in the American West, collaborated with William F. "Buffalo Bill" Cody to establish the town of Cody, Wyoming, in the 1890s. He advanced his financial investments in Wyoming through his numerous personal and professional contacts with various eastern investors and politicians in Washington DC. Beck's family--his father a Kentucky senator and his mother a grandniece of George Washington--and his adventures in the American West resulted in personal associates who ranged from western legends Buffalo Bill, Jesse James, and Calamity Jane to wealthy American elites such as George and Phoebe Hearst and Theodore Roosevelt. This definitive edition of Beck's memoir provides a glimpse of early life in Wyoming, offering readers a rare perspective on how community boosters cooperated with political leaders and wealthy financiers. Beck's memoir, introduced and annotated by Lynn J. Houze and Jeremy M. Johnston, offers a unique and sometimes amusing view of financial dealings in eastern boardrooms, as well as stories of Beck's adventures with Buffalo Bill in Wyoming. Beck's memoir demonstrates not only his interest in developing the West but also his humor and his willingness to collaborate with a variety of people.
