Download or read book The Beaux' Stratagem written by George Farquhar and published by A&C Black. This book was released on 2014-06-26 with total page 183 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It attests to Farquhar's stature as a man that he composed this warm-hearted and vibrant play while he was dying. Like The Recruiting Officer, the play is set in a provincial town and its plot is slight: Aimwell and Archer, two impecunious London gentlemen, arrive in Lichfield looking for an heiress to marry. Aimwell, posing as his elder brother, falls in love with his 'prey' Dorinda and confesses his imposture to her; his 'man-servant' Archer arouses the wistful interest of the unhappily married Mrs Sullen. The introduction to this edition discusses the play for its theatrical merits and argues that it dramatises the ills of marriage in early modern England, shown by Farquhar to be more injurious to the wife than to the husband, and calls for a reform of the divorce laws.

Download or read book Thornton Wilder and Ken Ludwig's Adaptation of The Beaux' Stratagem written by Thornton Wilder and published by Samuel French, Inc.. This book was released on 2007 with total page 104 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The play tells the story of two young bucks who, having spent all their money by living too well, leave London and roam from town to town in search of love and fortune. In order to find a wealthy heiress for at least one of them, they pose as master and servant ¿ exchanging roles from one town to the next. In Lichfield, Aimwell is the master and Archer the servant, and there they meet the lovely, wealthy Dorinda and her equally desirable sister-in-law, Mrs. Kate Sullen. They set their caps for these women, but problems abound. Kate is married to a drunken sot who despises her; the innkeeper¿s saucy daughter, Cherry, has set her cap for Archer; Dorinda¿s mother, Lady Bountiful, mistakenly believes herself to be a great healer of the sick, and she guards her daughter like a dragoness; and a band of brigands plans to rob the house of Lady Bountiful that very night, putting all schemes in jeopardy. This is a play in the great tradition of Goldsmith¿s She Stoops to Conquer and Sheridan¿s The Rivals and The School for Scandal. It is classic, formal, robust and hilarious.

Book Synopsis The Scent of Empires by : Karl Schlögel
Download or read book The Scent of Empires written by Karl Schlögel and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2021-04-27 with total page 220 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Can a drop of perfume tell the story of the twentieth century? Can a smell bear the traces of history? What can we learn about the history of the twentieth century by examining the fate of perfumes? In this remarkable book, Karl Schlögel unravels the interconnected histories of two of the world’s most celebrated perfumes. In tsarist Russia, two French perfumers – Ernest Beaux and Auguste Michel – developed related fragrances honouring Catherine the Great for the 300th anniversary of the Romanov dynasty. During the Russian Revolution and Civil War, Beaux fled Russia and took the formula for his perfume with him to France, where he sought to adapt it to his new French circumstances. He presented Coco Chanel with a series of ten fragrance samples in his laboratory and, after smelling each, she chose number five – the scent that would later go by the name Chanel No. 5. Meanwhile, as the perfume industry was being revived in Soviet Russia, Auguste Michel used his original fragrance to create Red Moscow for the tenth anniversary of the Revolution. Piecing together the intertwined histories of these two famous perfumes, which shared a common origin, Schlögel tells a surprising story of power, intrigue and betrayal that offers an altogether unique perspective on the turbulent events and high politics of the twentieth century. This brilliant account of perfume and politics in twentieth-century Europe will be of interest to a wide general readership.

Book Synopsis Genre and Ethics by : Edward Tomarken
Download or read book Genre and Ethics written by Edward Tomarken and published by University of Delaware Press. This book was released on 2002 with total page 292 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The study addresses the following kinds of questions: Why does genre need ethics? Why does ethics need genre? How is ethics related to and distinguished from ideology as currently used in cultural studies? How does a generic ethical method come to terms with history and historical change? How is a generic ethical method related to religion? Does genre reinforce the concept of the ethical agent? This book will therefore have a broad audience, including scholars whose fields range from the Renaissance to the present, theorists and philosophers whose interests include ethics, cultural studies, and ideologies, and educationists pursuing methods for graduates and undergraduates. The autobiographical introduction serves as the "hook," as our creative writers say, for this audience. Generically, it is experimental, being at once scholarly, pedagogical, and autobiographical."--BOOK JACKET.
