Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is how simple the complicated music business can be! I was sitting "shooting the bull" with the A&R man at Epic Records one day. He said, "You know what I would really like to find is a white kid that sings the blues like a black guy." I said, "I know a kid like that," or words to that effect. I then told him what I knew about Tim Williams. Tim was starving to death trying to run a Coffee House in Santa Barbara. He was only nineteen-years old, but very good. The problem was that I had no idea what to do with a Blues singer. Suddenly there was an answer to the question. The A&R man said, "Bring him down!" which meant to his office in Hollywood. When the day came to go to Hollywood we went in my car. I didn't think he had one that would make it down and back. He showed up in a pair of dark brown corduroy pants and a dark polo-type shirt, both clean, but covered with white lint. I was embarrassed to "showcase" him that way, but it could have been a sensitive subject so away we went. I didn't have a clue what to expect when we arrived at the office. In the now familiar get-to-the-point fashion the man said, "Let's hear something" after a few minutes of visiting. Tim opened his guitar case, took out his twelve string guitar and began playing as if the outcome didn't make a damn bit of difference to him. Mr. A&R man asked him to do some old standard, then something original that Tim had written. Then suddenly he said, "Sounds good, let's do a thing, make a record!" Just like that!

Book excerpt: This stunning examination of the last years of Édouard Manet's life and career is the first book to explore the transformation of his style and subject matter in the 1870s and early 1880s. The name Manet often evokes the provocative, heroically scaled pictures he painted in the 1860s for the Salon, but in the late 1870s and early 1880s the artist produced quite a different body of work: stylish portraits of actresses and demimondaines, luscious still lifes, delicate pastels, intimate watercolors, and impressionistic scenes of suburban gardens and Parisian cafés. Often dismissed as too pretty and superficial by critics, these later works reflect Manet’s elegant social world, propose a radical new alignment of modern art with fashionable femininity, and record the artist’s unapologetic embrace of beauty and visual pleasure in the face of death. Featuring nearly three hundred illustrations and nine fascinating essays by established and emerging Manet specialists, a technical analysis of the late Salon painting Jeanne (Spring), a selection of the artist’s correspondence, a chronology, and more, Manet and Modern Beauty brings a diverse range of approaches to bear on a little-studied area of this major artist’s oeuvre.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For most of the twentieth century, the “Mr. America” image epitomized muscular manhood. From humble beginnings in 1939 at a small gym in Schenectady, New York, the Mr. America Contest became the world’s premier bodybuilding event over the next thirty years. Rooted in ancient Greek virtues of health, fitness, beauty, and athleticism, it showcased some of the finest specimens of American masculinity. Interviewing nearly one hundred major figures in the physical culture movement (including twenty-five Mr. Americas) and incorporating copious printed and manuscript sources, John D. Fair has created the definitive study of this iconic phenomenon. Revealing the ways in which the contest provided a model of functional and fit manhood, Mr. America captures the event’s path to idealism and its slow descent into obscurity. As the 1960s marked a turbulent transition in American society—from the civil rights movement to the rise of feminism and increasing acceptance of homosexuality—Mr. America changed as well. Exploring the influence of other bodily displays, such as the Mr. Universe and Mr. Olympia contests and the Miss America Pageant, Fair focuses on commercialism, size obsession, and drugs that corrupted the competition’s original intent. Accessible and engaging, Mr. America is a compelling portrayal of the glory days of American muscle.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Philip Whalen was an American poet, Zen Buddhist, and key figure in the literary and artistic scene that unfolded in San Francisco in the 1950s and ’60s. When the Beat writers came West, Whalen became a revered, much-loved member of the group. Erudite, shy, and profoundly spiritual, his presence not only moved his immediate circle of Beat cohorts, but his powerful, startling, innovative work would come to impact American poetry to the present day. Drawing on Whalen’s journals and personal correspondence—particularly with Ginsberg, Kerouac, Snyder, Kyger, Welch, and McClure —David Schneider shows how deeply bonded these intimates were, supporting one another in their art and their spiritual paths. Schneider, himself an ordained priest, provides an insider’s view of Whalen’s struggles and breakthroughs in his thirty years as a Zen monk. When Whalen died in 2002 as the retired Abbot of the Hartford Street Zen Center, his own teacher referred to him as a patriarch of the Western lineage of Buddhism. Crowded by Beauty chronicles the course of Whalen’s life, focusing on his unique, eccentric, humorous, and literary-religious practice.
