Download or read book Integrated Beanfly Management in East Africa written by Johnson Kwach Kisera and published by LAP Lambert Academic Publishing. This book was released on 2014-02 with total page 164 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The most important field pests of common beans is bean flies. There is interaction of bean fly with root rot and Fusarium wilt disease complex in soils with depleted nutrients causing yield loss. Alternative management strategies were evaluated in Kenya in regions with severe decline in soil fertility to optimize yields. There was variation in bean fly infestation and damage in the cultivars and fertilizer rates during different seasons and locations. Plant resistance and response to fertilizer were influenced by environmental conditions, location specific and season. Phosphorus fertilizer increased growth and grain yield but didn't reduce infestation and plant damage, while Organic manure did. Efficiency in P- Acquisition was determined to be important in plant tolerance to bean fly . Cultivar selection is important factor in developing IPM strategy for bean fly control. Resistant varieties have morphological, physiological or biochemical factors that when combined with soil fertility amendments are effective in control. This book is recommended for research scientist, agricultural extension service providers, and university and middle level agricultural college students.

Book excerpt: The global biodiversity and climate emergencies demand transformative changes to human activities. For example, food production relies on synthetic, industrial and non-sustainable products for managing pests, weeds and diseases of crops. Sustainable farming requires approaches to managing these agricultural constraints that are more environmentally benign and work with rather than against nature. Increasing pressure on synthetic products has reinvigorated efforts to identify alternative pest management options, including plant-based solutions that are environmentally benign and can be tailored to different farmers’ needs, from commercial to small holder and subsistence farming. Botanical insecticides and pesticidal plants can offer a novel, effective and more sustainable alternative to synthetic products for controlling pests, diseases and weeds. This Special Issue reviews and reports the latest developments in plant-based pesticides from identification of bioactive plant chemicals, mechanisms of activity and validation of their use in horticulture and disease vector control. Other work reports applications in rice weeds, combination biopesticides and how chemistry varies spatially and influences the effectiveness of botanicals in different locations. Three reviews assess wider questions around the potential of plant-based pest management to address the global challenges of new, invasive and established crop pests and as-yet underexploited pesticidal plants.

Book Synopsis Lost Crops of Africa by : National Research Council
Download or read book Lost Crops of Africa written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2006-10-27 with total page 378 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report is the second in a series of three evaluating underexploited African plant resources that could help broaden and secure Africa's food supply. The volume describes the characteristics of 18 little-known indigenous African vegetables (including tubers and legumes) that have potential as food- and cash-crops but are typically overlooked by scientists and policymakers and in the world at large. The book assesses the potential of each vegetable to help overcome malnutrition, boost food security, foster rural development, and create sustainable landcare in Africa. Each species is described in a separate chapter, based on information gathered from and verified by a pool of experts throughout the world. Volume I describes African grains and Volume III African fruits.

The first section explores the agro-ecological framework that represents the foundations of IPM, in addition to emerging technologies in chemical and biological methods that are core to pest control in tropical crops. The second section follows a crop-based approach and provides details of current IPM applications in the main tropical food crops (such as cereals, legumes, root and tuber crops, sugarcane, vegetables, banana and plantain, citrus, oil palm, tea, cocoa and coffee) and also fibre crops (such as cotton) and tropical forests.

Book Synopsis Globalizing Integrated Pest Management by : George W. Norton
Download or read book Globalizing Integrated Pest Management written by George W. Norton and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2008-02-28 with total page 355 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As food demand has grown worldwide, agricultural production has intensified with a concomitant expansion in pesticide use. Concerns over pesticide-induced health and environmental problems, increased pest resistance to pesticides, and continued losses due to pests, have stimulated the search for alternative pest management solutions. As a result integrated pest management (IPM) approaches have been developed and applied that rely on genetic, cultural, biological and information-intensive pest management alternatives. This book presents and critiques the participatory approaches that can be used to globalize IPM. It describes the development, deployment, and evaluation of participatory IPM. All the chapters include perspectives from both the US and developing country scientists who are on the front lines of IPM generation and diffusion. The book is unique amongst IPM books in that it stresses policy analysis, social and economic impact assessment, multidisciplinary field research and technology transfer mechanisms.
