Book excerpt: Beam position monitors (BPM) for synchrotron light storage rings usually consist of beam pickup electrodes, coaxial relays and a narrowband receiver. While accurate, these systems are slow and of limited use in the commissioning of an accelerator. A beam position monitor is described which is intended to be a principal diagnostic during debug and routine running of a storage ring. It is capable of measuring the position of a single bunch on the first or nth orbit to an accuracy of a few percent. Stored beam position is more accurately measured with averaging techniques. Beam position changes can be studied in a bandwidth from DC to a few MHz. The beam monitor electronics consist of a separate amplification, detection, and sampling channel for each beam pickup electrode. Fast switches in each channel permit selection of the nth turn for measurement (single bunch mode). A calibration pulse is injected into each channel after beam measurement to permit gain offsets to be measured and removed from the final data. While initially more costly than the usual beam position monitor system, this sytem will pay for itself in reduced storage ring debug and trouble shooting time. 5 refs., 5 figs.

Book excerpt: A high-current Proton Storage Ring (PSR) is being constructed at Los Alamos to accumulate intense pulses of 800-MeV protons from LAMPF for delivery to neutron production targets. The beam's transverse location in the injection channel, ring, and extraction channel will be determined by a beam position monitor (BPM) system. The beam will be detected by stripline sensors that generate 4-quadrant position signals from the spectral components of the beam. Sixty sensors are planned for the installation, with their outputs selected by broadband RF multiplexers. The sensor outputs are processed by a differential phase correlator detector to produce an analog signal proportional to the position of the beam centroid. Digital conversion and processing will give overall resolution of the horizontal and vertical position of the beam at each sensor location to +-2 mm. The monitor will operate over the intensity range of 3 x 108 protons/bunch to 5 x 1013 protons/bunch. The beam-position system contains CAMAC-based instrumentation for display in three formats, including an azimuth histogram, a time plot, and a numerical readout. The monitor system also includes a microprocessor-based check and exerciser unit to serve as a design aid and maintenance tool.

The system reports beam position for bunches of between 5 x 108 and 8 x 101° electron charges, either singly or as continuous streams of bunches every 4.2 ns. Resolution at full charge is to be better than 10 microns in a single turn. Higher resolution is available via on-board multi-turn averaging. The position signal is processed in a 20 MHz bandwidth around 952 MHz. This bandwidth, rather broader than that typical of RF position monitors, allows good resolution for low charge single bunches. Additional novel features include stringent control of return losses in order to minimize cross-talk between nearby bunches which may contain very different charges. The digitizing electronics is multiplexed between the two PEP-II storage rings. Design, construction, and installation experience, as well as first results with beam are presented.

The storage ring contains 360 beam position monitors distributed around its 1104-meter circumference. The beam position monitor data acquisition system is capable of making turn-by-turn measurements of all BPMs simultaneously. It is VXI-based with each VXI crate containing the electronics for 9 BPMS. The VXI Local Bus is used to provide sustained data transfer rates of up to 13 mega-transfers per second to a scanner module. The system provides single-bunch tracking, bunch-to-bunch measurements, fast digital-averaged positions, beam position history buffering, and synchronized multi-turn measurements. Data is accessible to the control system VME crates via an MXI bus. Dedicated high-speed ports are provided to supply position data to beam orbit feedback systems.

Book excerpt: This thesis presents research on novel laboratory-scale synchrotron X-ray sources based on inverse Compton scattering and applications of their X-ray radiation using the Munich Compact Light Source (MuCLS) as an example. It provides an introduction to the theory of this laser-electron interaction, laser resonators and X-ray interactions with matter. On this basis, upgrades to the laser system including the development of a new laser optic, X-ray beam stabilisation and two techniques for fast X-ray energy switching of inverse Compton sources are presented. On the application side, the beamline, designed and developed for the inverse Compton X-ray source at the MuCLS, is described before various techniques and applications are demonstrated at this laboratory-scale synchrotron X-ray facility. Among them are K-edge subtraction imaging, X-ray phase contrast imaging and X-ray absorption spectroscopy. Additionally, a new X-ray microscopy technique, called full-field structured-illumination super-resolution X-ray transmission microscopy, is presented. Apart from research conducted at the MuCLS, this thesis contains an in-depth overview on the state of the art of the various types of inverse Compton X-ray sources that have been realised so far. Accordingly, this thesis may serve as a guide and reference work for researchers working with inverse Compton X-ray sources as well as future users of such devices.

The final configuration includes the filter-comparator installed in the accelerator tunnel and the signal conditioning and digitizing unit (SCDU) in a VXI configuration. The SCDU includes an AM/PM monopulse receiver at 352 MHz. Extensive testing was performed on the system. The key parameters measured were the null cancellation better than 45 db, dynamic range of better than 40 db, single bunch capability with 0.01 mA sensitivity, and a resolution better than 10 micron for 512 averaged turns. This last critical performance was tested using a moving wire to simulate the beam. This report will concentrate on the wire test results. Also, the actual production hardware will be presented.

After using the single-turn capability of the BPM electronics in the early ring commissioning phase, resolution measurements versus current and bandwidth were successfully performed. In the standard Sr vacuum chamber geometry, the resolution was measured with beam as 0.16 [mu]mA/√(Hz). For the insertion device vacuum chamber geometry, the resolution was measured to be 0.1 [mu]mA/√(Hz). Since the photon beam stability requirement for the users is only 4.5 microns rms in the vertical direction, investigations of rf BPM offset versus current and bunch pattern have also been initiated. Both single bunch and multibunch beam patterns with varying intensity were used to determine offset stability for both the global and the local orbit feedback applications.

These devices extract information about the particle motion or affect a change in the motion. One device used frequently as pick-up or kicker is made with two little plates with one or more terminations per plate. In this paper the structure with one termination per plate is examined. The azimuthal dependence is taken into account in circular geometry for one plate of given dimensions. The charges and currents induced on the plates are studied using azimuthal and frequency harmonic expansions. The potential equations are derived and developed in the frequency domain in order to give the close expression of the output voltage. And finally, the numerical results are discussed. 9 refs., 4 figs.

Book excerpt: The Advanced Light Source (ALS) is a synchrotron radiation facility nearing completion at LBL. As a third-generation machine, the ALS is designed to produce intense light from bend magnets, wigglers, and undulators (insertion devices). The facility will include a 50 MeV electron linear accelerator, a 1.5 GeV booster synchrotron, beam transport lines, a 1--2 GeV storage ring, insertion devices, and photon beam lines. Currently, the beam injection systems are being commissioned, and the storage ring is being installed. Electron beam position monitors (BPM) are installed throughout the accelerator and constitute the major part of accelerator beam diagnostics. The design of the BPM instruments is complete, and 50 units have been constructed for use in the injector systems. We are currently fabricating 100 additional instruments for the storage ring. In this paper I discuss engineering fabrication, testing and performance of the beam pickup electrodes and the BPM electronics.
