Some experiments, for example those which attempt to separate the longitudinal and transverse response of the target, would benefit from a determination of this quantity at a level of a few parts in 10,000 (1−4). To this end several experimental techniques have been proposed and implemented. These techniques can be roughly split into two broad classes; magnetic and kinematic. The magnetic measurements are based on measuring the deflection of the beam in a magnet or string of magnets of known absolute field integral. The kinematic methods rely on the reconstruction of the beam energy from measurements in scattering experiments. A third technique, based on measurements of spin precession of a polarized beam, has been suggested and a partial analysis of its errors has been presented by Ulmer. This paper expands upon that analysis.

In particular, lepton collisions such as e⁺e⁻ are ideal from both experimental and theoretical points of view, and are a unique means of probing the new energy region, sub-TeV to TeV. It is a common understanding that a next-generation e⁺e⁻ collider will have to be a linear machine that evades beam-energy losses due to synchrotron radiation. In this book, physics feasibilities at linear colliders are discussed in detail, taking into account the recent progress in high-energy physics.

Book excerpt: For the physics program at the International Linear Collider (ILC), an excellent bunch-by-bunch control of the beam energy is mandatory. Energy spectrometers upstream and downstream of the electron/positron interaction point were proposed and the present default option for the upstream spectrometer is a beam position monitor based (BPM-based) spectrometer. In 2006/2007, a prototype of such a device was commissioned at the End Station A beam line at the Stanford Linear Accelerator Center (SLAC) in order to study performance and reliability. In addition, a novel method based on laser Compton backscattering has been proposed, since as proved at the Large Electron-Positron Collider (LEP) and the Stanford Linear Collider (SLC), complementary methods are necessary to cross-check the results of the BPM-based spectrometer. In this thesis, an overview of the experiment at End Station A is given, with emphasis on the performance of the magnets in the chicane and first energy resolution estimations. Also, the novel Compton backscattering method is discussed in details and found to be very promising. It has the potential to bring the beam energy resolution well below the requirement.

Book excerpt: The seventh Advanced Study Institute (ASI) on Techniques and Concepts of High Energy Physics was held for the second time at the Club St. Croix, in St. Croix, U.S. Virgin Islands. The ASI brought together a total of 75 participants, from 19 countries. The primary support for the meeting was again provided by the Scientific Affairs Division of NATO. The ASI was cosponsored by the U.S. Department of Energy, by Fermilab, by the National Science Foundation, and by the University of Rochester. A special contribution from the Oliver S. and Jennie R. Donaldson Charitable Trust provided an important degree of flexibility, as well as support for worthy students from developing countries. As in the case of the previous ASIs, the scientific program was designed for advanced graduate students and recent PhD recipients in experimental particle physics. The present volume of lectures should complement the material published in the first six ASIs, and prove to be of value to a wider audience of physicists.

It is the first colliding linac, and produces Z° particles for High-Energy Physics measurements. The energy of each beam must be measured to one part in 104 on every collision (120 Hz). An Energy Spectrometer in each beam line after collision produces two stripes of high-energy synchrotron radiation with critical energy of a few MeV. The distance between these two stripes at an imaging plane measures the beam energy. The Wire- Imaging Synchrotron Radiation Detector (WISRD) system comprises a novel detector, data acquisition electronics, readout and analysis. The detector comprises an array of wires for each synchrotron stripe. The electronics measure secondary emission charge on each wire of each array. A Macintosh II (using THINK C, THINK Class Library) and DSP coprocessor (using ANSI C) acquire and analyze the data, and display and report the results for SLC operation.

Book excerpt: Precision measurements have played a vital role in our understanding of elementary particle physics. Experiments performed using e[sup+]e[sup -] collisions have contributed an essential part. Recently, the precision measurements at LEP and SLC have probed the standard model at the quantum level and severely constrained the mass of the Higgs boson[1]. Coupled with the limits on the Higgs mass from direct searches[2], this enables the mass to be constrained to be in the range 115-205 GeV. Developments in accelerator R and D have matured to the point where one could contemplate construction of a linear collider with initial energy in the 500 GeV range and a credible upgrade path to[approx] 1 TeV. Now is therefore the correct time to critically evaluate the case for such a facility. The Working Group E3, Experimental Approaches at Linear Colliders, was encouraged to make this evaluation. The group was charged with examining critically the physics case for a Linear Collider (LC) of energy of order 1 TeV as well as the cases for higher energy machines, assessing the performance requirements and exploring the viability of several special options. In addition it was asked to identify the critical areas where R and D is required (the complete text of the charge can be found in the Appendix). In order to address this, the group was organized into subgroups, each of which was given a specific task. Three main groups were assigned to the TeV-class Machines, Multi-TeV Machines and Detector Issues. The central activity of our working group was the exploration of TeV class machines, since they are being considered as the next major initiative in high energy physics. We have considered the physics potential of these machines, the special options that could be added to the collider after its initial running, and addressed a number of important questions. Several physics scenarios were suggested in order to benchmark the physics reach of the linear collider and persons were appointed to maintain contacts with the relevant activities in the various Physics Working Groups. Special options considered were precision electroweak studies that could be done by running the collider at and near the Z pole (so called Giga Z running); collisions involving[gamma][gamma], e[sup -]e[sup -], or e[gamma] interactions; and positron beam polarization. The following questions were posed in order to focus the discussions: (1) In view of the fact that the luminosity is a function of energy, what are the trade-offs involved in selecting the energy. (2) What is the argument for proceeding with the construction of a Linear collider as soon as possible rather than waiting for data from LHC? (3) In the context of a definite physics scenario, what is a realistic run plan? i.e. How much luminosity at each energy? (4) What should be the initial energy of a linear collider and to what energy should that machine extended?

Book excerpt: In this contribution accelerator solutions for polarized beams and their impact on physics measurements are discussed. Focus are physics requirements for precision polarimetry near the interaction point and their realization with polarized sources. Based on the ILC baseline programme as described in the Reference Design Report (RDR), recent developments are discussed and evaluated taking into account physics runs at beam energies between 100 GeV and 250 GeV, as well as calibration runs on the Z-pole and options as the 1TeV upgrade and GigaZ. The studies, talks and discussions presented at this conference demonstrated that beam polarization and its measurement are crucial for the physics success of any future linear collider. To achieve the required precision it is absolutely decisive to employ multiple devices for testing and controlling the systematic uncertainties of each polarimeter. The polarimetry methods for the ILC are complementary: with the upstream polarimeter the measurements are performed in a clean environment, they are fast and allow to monitor time-dependent variations of polarization. The polarimeter downstream the IP will measure the disrupted beam resulting in high background and much lower statistics, but it allows access to the depolarization at the IP. Cross checks between the polarimeter results give redundancy and inter-calibration which is essential for high precision measurements. Current plans and issues for polarimeters and also energy spectrometers in the Beam Delivery System of the ILC are summarized in reference [28]. The ILC baseline design allows already from the beginning the operation with polarized electrons and polarized positrons provided the spin rotation and the fast helicity reversal for positrons will be implemented. A reversal of the positron helicity significantly slower than that of electrons is not recommended to not compromise the precision and hence the success of the ILC. Recently to use calibration data at the Z resonance for physics has been discussed. It looks promising but further studies are needed to evaluate and to optimize these measurements. Finally it should be remarked: many studies on different physics processes and scenarios at a future linear collider are done for high luminosities and high energy assuming small and well-known uncertainties. Polarization, especially positron polarization, is often considered as not that important. But in order to interpret data and to reduce ambiguities in the measurements, the polarization of electrons and positrons and their very precise knowledge are essential. The ILC design must offer this from the beginning to be prepared for the physics questions after years of LHC operation.
