The wide popular accept ance of the five volumes encouraged him to extend the series by including, and rewriting for the purpose, others of his great range of lectures. The volume called War riors and Statesmen (now otherwise distributed) included a number of lectures which in this new edition have been arranged in more natural grouping. Among them were the lectures on Hamilton and Webster. It has been deemed wise to bring these into closer relation with their contemporaries, and thus Hamilton is now placed in this volume, among the other American Founders, and Webster in the volume on American Leaders. This re nowned name represents, however, the Persian power, the last of the great monarchies that ruled the Ori ental world until its conquest by the Greeks. Persia came suddenly into prominence in the middle of the seventh century before Christ. Prior to this time it was comparatively unknown and unimportant, and was one of the dependent provinces of Media, whose re ligion, language, and customs were not very dissimi lar to its own. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Beacon Lights of History, Vol. 3: Ancient Achievements We do not find in the history of ancient nations such a jurisprudence, except in the free States of Greece and among the Romans, who had a natural genius or aptitude for government, and where the people had a powerful influence in legislation, until even the name of liberty was not invoked. Among the Egyptians, Assyrians, and Babylonians the only laws were the edicts of kings or the regula tions of priests, mostly made with a view of cementing their own power, except those that were dictated by benevolence or the pressing needs of the people, who were ground down and oppressed, and protected only as slaves were once protected in the Southern States Of America. Wise and good monarchs doubtless issued decrees for the benefit of all classes, such as conscience or knowledge dictated, whenever they felt their great responsibilities, as in some of the absolute monarchies of Europe; but they never issued their decrees at the suggestions or demands of those classes for whom the laws were made. The voice of the people was ignored, except so far as it moved the pity or appealed to the hearts and consciences Of their rulers; the people had, and claimed, no rights. The only men to whom rulers listened, or by whom they were controlled, were those whom they chose as counsellors and ministers, who were supposed to advise with a view to the sovereigns benefit, and that of the empire generally. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Beacon Lights of History, Vol. 1: The Old Pagan Civilizations T has been my Object in these Lectures to give the substance of accepted knowledge pertaining to the leading events and characters of history; and in treating such a variety of subjects, extending over a period of more than six thousand years, each of which might fill a volume, I have sought to present what is true rather than what is new. Although most of these Lectures have been delivered, in some form, during the last forty years, in most of the cities and in many of the literary institutions of this country, I have carefully revised them within the last few years, in order to avail myself of the latest light shed on the topics and times of which they treat. It is my object in this book on the old Pagan civilizations to present the salient points only, since an exhaustive work is impossible within the limits of these volumes. The practical end which I have in view is to collate a sufficient number of acknowledged facts from which to draw sound inferences in reference to the progress of the human race, and the comparative welfare of nations in ancient and modern times. We are delighted to publish this classic book as part of our extensive Classic Library collection. Many of the books in our collection have been out of print for decades, and therefore have not been accessible to the general public. The aim of our publishing program is to facilitate rapid access to this vast reservoir of literature, and our view is that this is a significant literary work, which deserves to be brought back into print after many decades. The contents of the vast majority of titles in the Classic Library have been scanned from the original works. To ensure a high quality product, each title has been meticulously hand curated by our staff. Our philosophy has been guided by a desire to provide the reader with a book that is as close as possible to ownership of the original work. We hope that you will enjoy this wonderful classic work, and that for you it becomes an enriching experience.

No one man could hope, on such a variety of subjects, to present exhaustive treatises. It would be impossible, to the satisfaction of critics, to com press in six hundred pages the ancient history of the world. But I have done the best I could to seize on the important and salient points in the religion, the philosophy, the laws, the arts, the science, the litera ture, and the social life of the cultivated nations of antiquity. Imperial AntiquityThere is not much in ancient governments and laws to interest us, expect such as were in harmony with naturals justice, and were designed for the welfare of all classes in the States. A jurisprudence founded on the edicts of absolute kings, or on the regulations of a priestly caste, is necessarily partial, and may be unenlightened. But those laws which are gradually enacted for the interests of the whole body of the people, - for the rich and poor, the powerful and feeble alike, - have generally been the result of the great and diverse experiences, running through centuries, the work of wise men under constitutional forms of government. The jurisprudence of nations based equity is a growth or development according to public wants and necessities, especially in centuries having popular liberty and right, as in England and the United States.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
