Book excerpt: Further advancement in understanding the dynamics of larval exchange between estuarine and coastal marine benthic invertebrate populations requires: (1) knowing the origins of field-sampled larvae, and (2) synoptic assessments of horizontal and vertical larval distribution patterns over large areas for extended periods. Larval concentration and water velocity data were sampled concurrently and used to estimate larval flux rates between regions of San Diego Bay (SDB) and nearshore coastal waters in southern California. Simulations with a 2-D hydrodynamic model of SDB indicated widely differing larval transport probabilities depending on whether tidal vertical migration behavior occurs in the water column. Field studies indicate that crab (Pachygrapsus crassipes) zoeae migrate vertically in SDB, a behavior that promotes transport out of the Bay. In contrast, larvae of other crab species (Lophopanopeus spp.), which do not migrate vertically, are retained within SDB during development. An elemental larval fingerprinting technique (based on Cu, Zn, Al, Mn, and Sr) was developed to distinguish SDB from non-SDB spawned P. crassipes zoeae. With this method, bi-directional larval exchange was observed between SDB and coastal waters. Approximately 26% of P. crassipes larvae observed at the SDB entrance, and 5% at a mid-bay site, originated outside the Bay. This exchange is likely to have significant consequences for larval populations. Laboratory experiments revealed reduced survivorship in larvae spawned from or reared in SDB water relative to pristine coastal waters. Combined use of trace elemental fingerprinting and synoptic field methods can facilitate understanding of larval transport and ultimately population dynamics of coastal species.

Book excerpt: The objective of this DURIP award was the acquisition of an instrument to enhance analytical capabilities in support of grant no. N00014-96-1-0025 (Bay Ocean Exchange Processes: Development and Application of a Meroplankton Tracer Technique). This research is concerned with (1) determining the uptake and retention of trace metals by invertebrate larvae and (2) elemental fingerprinting of naturally occurring larvae as a means to determine site of origin. The objective was to quantify composition of multiple trace elements for small samples (i.e., individual larvae). With DURIP funds an Inductively Coupled Plasma-Optical Emission Spectrometer (ICP-OES, model Optima 3OOODV) was purchased for the Scripps Institution of Oceanography analytical facilities. The ICP-OES has been used to characterize the elemental composition of newly hatched crab larvae sampled from San Diego Bay, neighboring embayments and coastal habitats. Results have shown that elements (e.g., copper, aluminum, zinc, strontium) can be quantified for individual larvae and are useful in distinguishing larvae originating from inner vs outer San Diego Bay and coastal habitats. Other applications of the Scripps ICP-OES since its purchase include trace element characterization of (a) contaminated sediments to develop remediation methods (B. Tibo), (b) meteorites to model age of the early solar system (G. Lugmair and C. MacIsaac), and (c) igneous rocks to track earth history (P. Castillo).

Book excerpt: The last major synthesis of our knowledge of fish migration and the underlying transport and guidance phenomena, both physical and biological, was "Fish Migration" published 16 years ago by F.R. Harden Jones (1968). That synthesis was based largely upon what could be gleaned by classical fishery-biology techni.ques, such as tagging and recapture studies, commercial fishing statistics, and netting and trapping studies. Despite the fact that Harden Jones also provided, with a good deal of thought and speculation, a theoretical basis for studying the various aspects of fish migration and migratory orientation, progress in this field has been, with a few excepti.ons, piecemeal and more disjointed than might have been expected. Thus we welcomed the approach from the NATO Marine Sciences Programme Panel and the encouragement from F.R. Harden Jones to develop a proprosal for, and ultimately to organize, a NATO Advanced Research Institute (ARI) on mechanisms of fish migration. Substantial progress had been made with descriptive, analytical and predictive approaches to fish migration since the appearance of "Fish ~ligration." Both because of the progress and the often conflicting results of research, we felt that the time was again right and the effort justified to synthesize and to critically assess our knowledge. Our ultimate aim was to identify the gains and shortcomings and to develop testable hypotheses for the next decade or two.
