Book excerpt: Battles in the Carolinas and Our Ancestral Veterans is a collection of stories and personal sketches from the author's larger work, This Too Shall Pass, Genealogy of the Western North Carolina Hardin, Wilkie, Daily, and Brooks Families, Volumes I, II, & III. In this beautifully illustrated book the authors focus on the struggles of their ancestors and their involvement in the eastern Indian Wars, three critical Revolutionary War battles in the Carolinas that were instrumental in our country's fight for independence from England, and in the Civil War and the plight of the southern soldiers. From their Quaker ancestors involvement with Daniel Boone and his battles with the Shawnee Indians on the Appalachian frontier, to the Quaker's selfless acts of kindness when the Battle of Guilford Courthouse came to their doorstep, and from the aftermath of the Battle of Kings Mountain that played out on the Hanging Tree in Rutherford County, to the first Patriot victory in the Revolutionary War at the Battle of Moores Creek Bridge, the authors give us many personal and revealing accounts of historical events and the plights and conditions their family ancestors had to endure. This book also sheds light on the southern culture, ideals, and their Carolina forefathers who answered the call of the bugle and drum to bravely march off to fight in the Civil War. And throughout this work, from the Indian Wars to the Civil War, the authors record and make special note of the names of all their ancestral veterans who fought, and died -- and those that survived. So whether you trace your roots through western North Carolina and family surnames such as Brooks, Covington, Daily, Gladden, Hardin, Hunt, Mendenhall, Rawlings, Rollins, Smart, Van Winkle, Walker, and Wilkie -- or whether you simply love reading about our country's history, there is much to enjoy in this wonderfully illustrated, interesting and informative account of the Battles in the Carolinas and Our Ancestral Veterans.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Civil War scholar Michael Hardy delves into the story of North Carolina's Confederate past, from civilians to soldiers, as these Tar Heels proved they were a force to be reckoned with. "First at Bethel, farthest at Gettysburg and Chickamauga and last at Appomattox" is a phrase that is often used to encapsulate the role of North Carolina's Confederate soldiers. Tar Heels witnessed the pitched battles of New Bern, Averysboro and Bentonville, as well as incursions like Sherman's March and Stoneman's Raid. The state was one of the last to leave the Union but contributed more men and sustained more dead than any other Southern state. This inclusive history of the Old North State is a must-read for any Civil War buff!

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The battle of Cowpens was a crucial turning point in the Revolutionary War in the South and stands as perhaps the finest American tactical demonstration of the entire war. On 17 January 1781, Daniel Morgan's force of Continental troops and militia routed British regulars and Loyalists under the command of Banastre Tarleton. The victory at Cowpens helped put the British army on the road to the Yorktown surrender and, ultimately, cleared the way for American independence. Here, Lawrence Babits provides a brand-new interpretation of this pivotal South Carolina battle. Whereas previous accounts relied on often inaccurate histories and a small sampling of participant narratives, Babits uses veterans' sworn pension statements, long-forgotten published accounts, and a thorough knowledge of weaponry, tactics, and the art of moving men across the landscape. He identifies where individuals were on the battlefield, when they were there, and what they saw--creating an absorbing common soldier's version of the conflict. His minute-by-minute account of the fighting explains what happened and why and, in the process, refutes much of the mythology that has clouded our picture of the battle. Babits put the events at Cowpens into a sequence that makes sense given the landscape, the drill manual, the time frame, and participants' accounts. He presents an accurate accounting of the numbers involved and the battle's length. Using veterans' statements and an analysis of wounds, he shows how actions by North Carolina militia and American cavalry affected the battle at critical times. And, by fitting together clues from a number of incomplete and disparate narratives, he answers questions the participants themselves could not, such as why South Carolina militiamen ran toward dragoons they feared and what caused the "mistaken order" on the Continental right flank.

No, Plymouth, North Carolina. If you have never heard of it, you are in the company of many others, even those who consider themselves avid Civil War buffs. The Battle of Plymouth took place on April 17-20, 1864. Even though the last shots were fired 138 years ago, the sounds of that terrible conflict are with us still. Interest in the Civil War does not wane and new facts continue to be uncovered. In this book you will read about the second largest battle in North Carolina. It was fought at Plymouth where the Confederates tasted their last victory. Intense drama took place during four days filled with surprise, fate, intrigue, bravery, ingenuity, hope, daring, dedication, gallantry, victory, disappointment, and defeat. Are you familiar with the names of Cooke, Cushing, Flusser, Hoke, and Wessells? Have you heard of the CSS Albemarle, a ship not built in a shipyard as expected, but in a cornfield? Are you aware of who is credited with having achieved the most daring venture in all of the Civil War, and that it happened at Plymouth, North Carolina? Even if you do know the answers to all of these questions, you will want to read still more about them in this informative enlightening, and interesting book.
