Book excerpt: The Siege of Mafeking remains one of the most renowned actions of the Second Boer War, with the British Army defeating a Boer force of up to 8,000 men with barely 1,500 troops. In a siege that lasted 217 days, Robert Baden-Powell and his troops withheld attack from the Boers against all the odds and Mafeking was finally relieved on 17 May 1900. It caused much public excitement in Victorian Britain, with Baden-Powell emerging as a national hero. If you want to understand what happened and why – read Battle Story. One of the most famous, if controversial, battles of the Second Boer War – memorialised across South Africa, Canada and the United Kingdom The Siege of Mafeking was instrumental in turning Robert Baden-Powell (later founder of the Scouts) into a national hero Includes significant contribution from South African, Canadian and Australian troops.

Book excerpt: The most famous British action of the Second Boer War The Siege of Mafeking remains one of the most famous actions of the Second Boer War, with the British Army defeating a Boer force of more than 8,000 men with only 1,500 troops. The town of Mafeking was designated a central location due to its rail connections and Robert Baden-Powell decided to trial his theory of defense rather than attack here. He holed up his troops in Mafeking, fortifying the city for a siege that would last for 217 days. 800 men held Mafeking, supported by a cadet corps of 12 to 15-year-olds who later inspired the Scouting Movement. The town withheld attack from the Boers against the odds and was finally relieved on May 17, 1900. The siege and relief of Mafeking caused much public excitement in Victorian Britain and Robert Baden-Powell became a war hero.

The Boers proved to be formidable opponents, masterfully compensating for inferior numbers with grim determination, resourcefulness and strong religious faith. Their mobility, expert use of cover, and knowledge of the terrain, in which they employed powerful long-range magazine rifles, gave them initial advantages. By contrast the British suffered from inadequate transport, insufficient mounted troops and poor intelligence. Despite marshalling the immense resources of their empire, the British were to be severely tested in a war which one general described as 'the graveyard of many a soldier's reputation'.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The war in South Africa has been no exception to the general rule that the origin of current events is to be sought in the history of the past, and their present course to be understood by an appreciation of existing conditions, which decisively control it. This is especially true of the matter here before us; because the southern extreme of Africa, like to that of the American continent, has heretofore lain far outside of the common interest, and therefore of the accurate knowledge, of mankind at large. The Cape of Good Hope and Cape Horn, in themselves remote, tempestuous, and comparatively unproductive regions, for centuries derived importance merely from the fact that by those ways alone the European world found access to the shores of the Pacific and Indian Oceans. The application of steam to ocean navigation, and the opening of the Suez Canal, have greatly modified conditions, by diverting travel from the two Capes to the Canal and to the Straits of Magellan. It is only within a very few years that South Africa, thus diminished in consequence as a station upon a leading commercial highway, has received compensation by the discovery of great mineral wealth.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This impressive collection of 100 of the most decisive and important sieges spans human history and covers conflicts in Africa, Asia, Europe, and the Americas. This engaging reference work provides readers with detailed coverage on the sieges that have had the biggest impact on world history. In addition to providing basic factual information, this encyclopedia delves into the historical context and significance of each siege. Readers will be able to identify relationships between entries and observe both the gradual evolution of siege warfare over time, and compare and contrast siege characteristics within and among different historical time periods. The encyclopedia's expansive scope will broaden readers' understanding of military history. The book begins with a preface and an introductory essay that offers a detailed overview of siege warfare throughout history. This is followed by 100 chronological entries on the most significant sieges, beginning with the Siege of Troy (1194–1184 BCE) and ending with the Siege of Mosul (October 17, 2016-July 9, 2017). Each siege entry has a Further Reading section that directs readers to additional information about the siege. Numerous illustrations and maps accompany the text.
