Book excerpt: This volume provides an account of the historical and architectural development of this great monastery, and a report on the recent excavations there. The latter saw the complete excavation of the chapter house and reredorter, and established a sequence of development from the hillside of the battle of Hastings, through the Norman abbey and its additions, to the great thirteenth-century rebuilding, continued late medieval activity and the post-dissolution periods of decay and revival. The excavations produced a wide range of finds. These included important sequences of pottery and roof tile; material that throws light on the design, glazing and flooring fo the monastic buildings; and an extensive collection of objects of bone, lead, copper alloy, iron and glass. Many of these finds came from a rich Dissolution rubbish dump.

Book Synopsis Bats, Baronets and Battle by : Tim Dudgeon
Download or read book Bats, Baronets and Battle written by Tim Dudgeon and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2013-03-26 with total page 237 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Bats, baronets and Battle is more than just about cricket. This is a history full of colourful characters eccentric baronets with a fondness for gambling, forthright women who wished to take their role and the game beyond an excuse to wear a pretty dress, and brothers from local villages who played the sport at the highest levels home and abroad. If Sussex was the cradle for the earliest of cricket, the villages around Battle were there at the games birth. From Georgian times and the murky world of 18th century politics, Tim Dudgeon traces Battle crickets role from its role in 18th century Georgian gambling though the fear of 19th century rural unrest and the dawn of the professional game to the tragic impact of two world wars and into the modern era. The story he uncovers is an intriguing one that has local people and communities at its heart, but throws light on their links with events and forces that have shaped our world today.
Book Synopsis Landscapes of the Norman Conquest by : Trevor Rowley
Download or read book Landscapes of the Norman Conquest written by Trevor Rowley and published by Pen and Sword Archaeology. This book was released on 2022-11-04 with total page 378 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For a long time, the Norman Conquest has been viewed as a turning point in English history; an event which transformed English identity, sovereignty, kingship, and culture. The years between 1066 and 1086 saw the largest transfer of property ever seen in English History, comparable in scale, if not greater, than the revolutions in France in 1789 and Russia in 1917. This transfer and the means to achieve it had a profound effect upon the English and Welsh landscape, an impact that is clearly visible almost 1,000 years afterwards. Although there have been numerous books examining different aspects of the British landscape, this is the first to look specifically at the way in which the Normans shaped our towns and countryside. The castles, abbeys, churches and cathedrals built in the new Norman Romanesque style after 1066 represent the most obvious legacy of what was effectively a colonial take-over of England. Such phenomena furnished a broader landscape that was fashioned to intimidate and demonstrate the Norman dominance of towns and villages. The devastation that followed the Conquest, characterised by the ‘Harrying of the North’, had a long-term impact in the form of new planned settlements and agriculture. The imposition of Forest Laws, restricting hunting to the Norman king and the establishment of a military landscape in areas such as the Welsh Marches, had a similar impact on the countryside.
