Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Bats, often misunderstood and unfairly burdened with associations of darkness and malevolence, have long been intertwined with folklore, mythology, and the realms of the supernatural. Their nocturnal flights and cryptic behaviors have fueled the human imagination, giving rise to legends that transcend cultures and civilizations. In this collection, we embark on a journey through the haunted dimensions where bats become conduits for curses, ancient pacts, and spectral entities that manifest in chilling tales of horror. There's a peculiar allure to darkness—a fascination that borders on the unknown and the forbidden. Bats, with their silent flights and haunting cries, have become symbolic emissaries of the night. As we delve into these horror stories, we invite you to suspend disbelief and embrace the sinister beauty that dwells within the shadows. The genesis of this anthology lies in the exploration of the primal fears that echo through generations. Bats, with their associations with vampires, witches, and supernatural omens, have been both feared and revered throughout history. As we curated these tales, we aimed not only to elicit shivers down the spine but also to unravel the rich tapestry of human imagination and the primal instincts that respond to the unknown.

Book excerpt: Filmmaker Alex Cox's thoughtful autobiography examines his craft and influences, as well as providing his insights into many of his favorite films. Sometimes called a radical, Cox is a quintessential auteur, as well as an internationally focused, insightful critic and writer whose passion for film has gripped him since childhood. In addition to being a captivating look into Cox's process, this book also encourages and instructs would-be independent filmmakers, guiding the next generation of film pioneers through the arduous journey of creation. Cox weaves his own "confessions" with his notes to the new guard, including thoughts on new forms of digital distribution and his radical views on intellectual property — the result is a readable, startling treatise on both the film innovations of today and the thrilling potential of future filmmaking.

Book Synopsis You're Sending Me Where? by : Eric Dregni
Download or read book You're Sending Me Where? written by Eric Dregni and published by U of Minnesota Press. This book was released on 2017-03-17 with total page 170 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Welcome! Benvenuti! It’s summertime in northern Minnesota and a bus full of kids is about to arrive at the Italian Concordia Language Village, better known as camp. Inexplicably the chief lifeguard has chosen this moment to conduct a “missing villager drill,” prompting staff to strip to their underwear in a simulated rush to search the lake. It’s an inopportune time for a surprise visit from the Health Inspector, but there he is—just as an Italian counselor calls through the walkie-talkie, “My God, there’s blood everywhere!” He’s finally clobbered the chipmunk that’s been stealing his candy. When at age six he had to be hauled kicking and screaming on the bus bound for camp, Eric Dregni could not have imagined this moment. But all the days and weeks of summer camp since then have shown him the abundant pleasures of this uniquely American experience—and given him plenty of stories to tell. In You’re Sending Me Where? Dregni takes us back to those boyhood days of running head-on into nature with his fellow campers and learning a few valuable lessons, such as don’t let the van driver leave you and your canoe until you’re sure there’s actually water in the “flowage.” From discouraging summer love to soothing homesick campers to—Oh no! Bats!—taking everyone to town for their rabies shots, to the difficulty of saying goodbye, Eric Dregni’s wise, funny book reassures us that there’s still a place in the woods where, unplugged from devices and screens, children of all ages can connect with the natural world—and with each other.

Download or read book Bats written by Johan Eklöf and published by Springer. This book was released on 2018-05-14 with total page 176 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This comprehensive book about the lives of bats is about a group of peculiar, mythical and fascinating animals. They are mammals, just like us, but still so different. The book covers bats from Latin American Maya temples to Swedish potato cellars; from the plains of Kenya to the Taiwanese mountains. We perceive their shadows flitting by in the summer nights, hear their mating calls in the darkness of autumn and see their silhouettes in the dim street light. The bats live in our houses and forage in our gardens and parks. But who are they and how do they lead their lives? The text and exquisite photos give an unsurpassed insight into the world of sounds and smells that bats encounter each night. We are told about how their senses, way beyond our human perception abilities, shape their lives. We get to know more about their habits, their long evolution and their cohabitation with humans, and how important they are to the environment. You will never again feel lonely in the darkness of the night.

Download or read book Complete Plays written by Ronald Firbank and published by Dalkey Archive Press. This book was released on 1994 with total page 154 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Complementing Dalkey Archive's edition of Firbank's Complete Short Stories (published in 1990), Complete Plays makes available for the first time in one volume this inimitable British writer's three excursions into drama: The Mauve Tower (1904), a "dream play" reminiscent in language and setting of Oscar Wilde's Salome and the writings of the French symbolists; A Disciple from the Country (1907), a one-act comedy about a debutante who flirts with religion and sainthood in order to catch a husband; and The Princess Zoubaroff (1920), a three-act comedy about marriage, religion, and homosexual separatism. The latter, which has been produced in England occasionally since the 1950s, is considered to be among Firbank's major works, and yet it, like the other two plays, has not been generally available in this country until now. The plays are filled with the wit and satire for which Firbank's novels are relished; indeed, Firbank's novels relied so heavily on dialogue that the distinction between them and his plays is minimal. Consequently, those who enjoy his novels and stories - as well as those who enjoy the comic British theater tradition of Pinero, Wilde, and Coward - should welcome this collection. Steven Moore, who edited the Complete Short Stories, has written an introduction placing the plays in the context of Firbank's life.
