Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: God’s Prophets Demand Justice This summer, lessons in ADULT BIBLE STUDIES follow the theme “God’s Prophets Demand Justice.” The student book writer is Sarah McGiverin. Stan Purdum is the writer for the teacher book. Unit 1 Amos Rails Against Injustice The four lessons in this unit come from the Book of Amos. The first lesson focuses on knowing right from wrong and choosing wrong. Lesson 2 deals with attempts to hide injustice. Lesson 3 focuses on the injustice of greed and selfishness, while Lesson 4 deals with failure to heed warnings to end injustice. Judgment on Israel and Judah (Amos 2:4-8) God Is Not Fooled (Amos 5:14-15, 18-27) Rebuked for Selfishness (Amos 6:2-8, 11-14) God Will Never Forget (Amos 8:1-6, 9-10) Unit 2 Micah Calls for Justice Among Unjust People The first lesson in this four-lesson unit from Micah focuses on social and moral injustice. Lesson 2 deals with the injustice of corrupt leaders. The last two lessons examine what God requires for justice and how God dispenses mercy to restore justice. No Rest for the Wicked (Micah 2:4-11) No Tolerance for Corrupt Leaders and Prophets (Micah 3:5-12) Justice, Love, and Humility (Micah 6:3-8) God Shows Clemency (Micah 7:14-20) Unit 3 Advocates of Justice for All The final unit this quarter offers five lessons from five different biblical prophets. Lesson 1 features Isaiah’s prophecies that God will come as a redeemer bringing righteousness and justice to Israel. Lesson 2 focuses on Jeremiah’s description of corruption in the Temple as a choice to do good or bad, resulting in God’s blessing or punishment. In Lesson 3, the focus is on Ezekiel’s call for confession and repentance in order to build a healthy faith community. Lesson 4 features Zechariah’s words on God’s clear instruction for showing kindness, mercy, and justice to others. Finally, Lesson 5 examines Malachi’s efforts to inform the people that God requires justice and faithfulness and will bestow bountiful blessings in proportion to what they were willing to give. Our Redeemer Comes (Isaiah 59:15-21) A Choice to Be Just (Jeremiah 7:1-15) A Call for Repentance (Ezekiel 18:1-13, 31-32) God Demands Justice (Zechariah 7:8-14) Return to a Just God (Malachi 3:1-10) Developed for use with the student book based on the Uniform Series, this leader resource provides a wealth of information, planning ideas, and lesson guides for each of the 13 lessons in the quarter. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Baseball Hits and Bible Bits, pastor and former Minor League pitcher Frank D. Minton shares unforgettable stories and anecdotes about two of his great loves in lifebaseball and the Bible. When Minton was eleven years old, God called him to preach; that call to serve the Lord would never leave his heart. His north high school exploits on the ball fields of Wichita, Kansas, earned him a scholarship at the University of Oklahoma and eventually a contract with the Dodgers organization. After three years in the minors, he realized that following Gods call was more important than making it to the big leagues. He turned down the Dodgers contract offer for a fourth year, leaving baseball behind to become a Baptist minister. It was one of the most difficult decisions of his life, but according to Minton, he traded a diamond for a crown. Baseball poems and songs are sprinkled throughout, and sketches by artist Berth-el Young add dimension and feeling. With stories about baseball greats both past and presentsuch as Sandy Koufax, Josh Hamilton, and Albert Pujolsand rich autobiographical details of a life lived in the service of the Lord, Baseball Hits and Bible Bits has something for just about everybody: from little leaguers to bush leaguers to big leaguers.

Book excerpt: A work of scholarship and a labor of love. "This is the definitive history of the Batman in all media: comics, film, television and the internet. The bookÆs combination of rigorous historical research and a witty, fluid writing style make it both vastly instructive and vastly entertaining."--Roberta Pearson, editor of The Many Lives of the Batman "Will appeal to avid students of pop culture and comics, and a gay cult audience...BrookerÆs impressive overview of BatmanÆs history reflects on the masked oneÆs origins, early arch rivals and the introduction of Robin, and concentrates on four periods: WWII, the mid 1950s, the Æ60s and the Æ90s. In 1954, child psychologist Fredric Wertham attacked the comic book industryànoting homoerotic undercurrents between Batman and Robin; BrookerÆs lengthy and fascinating Ægay readingÆ supports WerthamÆs claim, albeit with a positive, postmodern twist. After recalling the campy image of Batman spawned by ABCÆs 1960s TV show, the author takes a look at Batman writers, fans, fanzines and the Net, concluding with a hilarious chapter on how his research was ridiculed by the British media." -Publishers Weekly ôàBrookerÆs account is bolstered by his fan expertise. This book usefully expands uponàThe Many Lives of Batman. Recommendedàö--Library Journal"A historical, detailed, deep analysis of Batman as a cultural icon in America. This isn't a simple polemic or surface-shallow analysis. This is deep stuff-analyzing art styles, histories, individual panels, cultural concepts, and historical documentsà. plenty of startling revelations and analysesàThis is a stunningly well-done, intelligent book. It's proof that comics are not throwaway ephemera, but real, vital, analyzable parts of our culture. It's also a must-have for the hardcore Batman fan and comics fan-who doesn't mind some ideas being challenged."--www.super-heroes.netôBrooker cuts through the mumbo jumbo to deliver incisive analysis and very sharp reporting, particularly on the comic book's homoerotic subtext and on the 60's TV show's knowing self-mockery, as well as on how the 'official' 21st Century Batman nods to both.ö--Entertainment WeeklyOver the sixty years of his existence, Batman has encountered an impressive array of cultural icons and has gradually become one himself. This fascinating book examines what Batman means and has meant to the various audiences, groups and communities who have tried to control and interpret him over the decades. Brooker reveals the struggles over Batman's meaning by shining a light on the cultural issues of the day that impacted on the development of the character. They include: patriotic propaganda of the Second World War; the accusation that Batman was corrupting the youth of America by appearing to promote a homosexual lifestyle to the fans of his comics; Batman becoming a camp, pop culture icon through the ABC TV series of the sixties; fans' interpretation of Batman in response to the comics and the Warner Bros. franchise of films.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Think of what revitalizing journalism would do for the cause of Christ in America! It is the most needed sort of pre-evangelism; it is training in Christian worldview; it is an aid to sanctification, and you need to teach people how to do it." --J. I. Packer to Marvin Olasky Telling the Truth is Dr. Olasky's valuable response to this charge from the noted theologian. In it he emphasizes both the philosophical and the practical: detailing the need for Christian journalists to have a well developed worldview, and giving essential instruction to help them hone their writing, editing, and interviewing skills. The shortcomings of modern journalism are many. Too often evangelical publications, instead of exhibiting the journalistic excitement of the hunt, are content printing public-relations releases and carrying on their business in a joyless manner. But it doesn't have to be this way. Indeed, as Christians, it must not be this way! We are called to excellence; to do our work in such a way that it glorifies the Creator Himself. This incisive book not only urges journalists to grasp the significance of their purpose but also shows them how to more effectively accomplish it. As Olasky says, "If even fifty new, talented, biblically directed journalists were to emerge in America during the next few years, the revitalization of Christian journalism would be well under way."

Following a series of events, Chuck is taught a valuable lesson about forgiveness after receiving a new baseball, bat, and glove for his birthday. Upon entrance to the park, to try out his new bat, Chuck is forced to make a choice between friendship and forgiveness. What Chuck does not realize is that with the next swing of the bat, Chuck will hit a homerun - right into the Bible Zone. Author, illustrator and experienced children's pastor, Rich Ablondi created the Adventures In The Bible Zone series to educate children the parables and teachings of Jesus. The Ball, The Bat, And Unforgiving Brat is the second book in the series. This book shares the parable of the unforgiving servant from a perspective that every child may one day experience. Moreover, readers will learn the importance of forgiveness and the high cost God paid to redeem mankind to live with him forever.

Each man came from a different corner of the country and brought a distinctive local culture with him: Evers from the Irish-American hothouse of Troy, New York; Tinker from the urban parklands of Kansas City, Missouri; Chance from the verdant fields of California's Central Valley. The stories of these early baseball stars shed unexpected light not only on the evolution of baseball and on the enthusiasm of its players and fans all across America, but also on the broader convulsions transforming the US into a confident new industrial society."--Page [4] of cover.

Are religious customs something you do out of an obligation to family and tradition? Have you ever questioned the role God plays in your life? In From Matzah Balls to My Bible: My Journey to Finding God, Heidi takes you along on a journey as she seeks to find answers to these questions. She begins to recognize how she has been held captive by the concepts of herself that others formed in her, and she begins to really explore just who God is in her life. What she learns along the way forever changes who she is, what she believes, and how she lives her life. As a result of seeking God and developing a relationship with him, Heidi develops a strength she never thought she had, and she learns to free herself from thoughts that held her captive. As a result of questioning and seeking answers, Heidi begins to transform her life from “being” Jewish to “believing” and developing faith and hope.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From his first year in the majors, George Herman "Babe" Ruth knew he could profit from celebrity. Babe Ruth Cigars in 1915 marked his first attempt to cash in. Traded to the Yankees in 1920, he soon signed with Christy Walsh, baseball's first publicity agent. Walsh realized that stories of great deeds in sports were a commodity, and in 1921 sold Ruth's ghostwritten byline to a newspaper syndicate for $15,000 ($187,000 today). Ruth hit home runs while Walsh's writers made him a hero, crafting his public image as a lovable scalawag. Were the stories true? It didn't matter--they sold. Many survive but have never been scrutinized until now. Drawing on primary sources, this book examines the stories, separating exaggerated facts from clear falsehoods. This book traces Ruth's ascendance as the first great media-created superstar and celebrity product endorser.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the team’s inception in 1903, the New York Yankees were a floundering group that played as second-class citizens to the New York Giants. With four winning seasons to date, the team was purchased in 1915 by Jacob Ruppert and his partner, Cap “Til” Huston. Three years later, when Ruppert hired Miller Huggins as manager, the unlikely partnership of the two figures began, one that set into motion the Yankees’ run as the dominant baseball franchise of the 1920s and the rest of the twentieth century, capturing six American League pennants with Huggins at the helm and four more during Ruppert’s lifetime. The Yankees’ success was driven by Ruppert’s executive style and enduring financial commitment, combined with Huggins’s philosophy of continual improvement and personnel development. While Ruppert and Huggins had more than a little help from one of baseball’s greats, Babe Ruth, their close relationship has been overlooked in the Yankees’ rise to dominance. Though both were small of stature, the two men nonetheless became giants of the game with unassailable mutual trust and loyalty. The Colonel and Hug tells the story of how these two men transformed the Yankees. It also tells the larger story about baseball primarily in the tumultuous period from 1918 to 1929—with the end of the Deadball Era and the rise of the Lively Ball Era, a gambling scandal, and the collapse of baseball’s governing structure—and the significant role the Yankees played in it all. While the hitting of Babe Ruth and Lou Gehrig won many games for New York, Ruppert and Huggins institutionalized winning for the Yankees.
