Download or read book Pitt written by Sam Sciullo, Jr. and published by Sports Publishing LLC. This book was released on 2005 with total page 162 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From 2001-2004, no Division IA men's college basketball program in the country had a better winning percentage (88-16, .846) than the University of Pittsburgh. Pitt also won (or shared) three consecutive Big East Conference regular-season or tournament championships during that period. Approaching its 100th year of intercollegiate basketball, Pitt could lay claim to the assertion that these were, indeed, a rejuvenation of its glory days. It wasn't always that way. The university--once known as the Western University of PennsylvaniA fielded its first basketball team in 1905-06. The team practiced and played just about anywhere it could find a floor and a couple of hoops. Crowds were small, media coverage was slim, and the future of the program was doubtful. That program officially became known as the University of Pittsburgh's Panthers in 1909. After H.C. Doc Carlson--a former Pitt football and basketball player as well as a physician by trade--became head coach in 1922, the program firmly established itself. In 1925, the Panthers had their first true home facility when they moved into the Pavilion--a gym beneath Pitt Stadium. Carlson would lead the Panthers to a pair of mythical national titles by the end of the 1920s. Pitt: 100 Years of Pitt Basketball is the definitive history of basketball at the University of Pittsburgh. From Charley Hyatt, Doc Carlson's first All-American, through sure and steady point guard Brandin Knight, some of college basketball's most influential players have worn blue and gold. Scoring whiz Don Hennon burst onto the scene in the '50s, followed by rugged Brian Generalovich in the '60s, and silky smooth Billy Knight in the '70s. Sam Bam Clancy helpedturn Pitt's program around in the late '70s, and when Pitt was invited to join the Big East Conference in 1982, the face of the program changed forever. Its rosters and coaching staffs--formerly filled with Pennsylvania boys and men with Pitt backgrounds--would soon include players and coaches from across the nation. Charles Smith and Jerome Lane gave Pitt a dynamic one--two inside punch-and a pair of Big East titles--in the 1980s. And when Ben Howland left Northern Arizona in 1999 to coach the Panthers, aided by a young assistant named Jamie Dixon, Pitt basketball was on the cusp of college basketball greatness.

Download or read book Your Inner Fish written by Neil Shubin and published by Vintage. This book was released on 2008-01-15 with total page 258 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The paleontologist and professor of anatomy who co-discovered Tiktaalik, the “fish with hands,” tells a “compelling scientific adventure story that will change forever how you understand what it means to be human” (Oliver Sacks). By examining fossils and DNA, he shows us that our hands actually resemble fish fins, our heads are organized like long-extinct jawless fish, and major parts of our genomes look and function like those of worms and bacteria. Your Inner Fish makes us look at ourselves and our world in an illuminating new light. This is science writing at its finest—enlightening, accessible and told with irresistible enthusiasm.
Download or read book Innate written by Kevin J. Mitchell and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2020-03-31 with total page 305 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "What makes you the way you are--and what makes each of us different from everyone else? In Innate, leading neuroscientist and popular science blogger Kevin Mitchell traces human diversity and individual differences to their deepest level: in the wiring of our brains. Deftly guiding us through important new research, including his own groundbreaking work, he explains how variations in the way our brains develop before birth strongly influence our psychology and behavior throughout our lives, shaping our personality, intelligence, sexuality, and even the way we perceive the world. We all share a genetic program for making a human brain, and the program for making a brain like yours is specifically encoded in your DNA. But, as Mitchell explains, the way that program plays out is affected by random processes of development that manifest uniquely in each person, even identical twins. The key insight of Innate is that the combination of these developmental and genetic variations creates innate differences in how our brains are wired--differences that impact all aspects of our psychology--and this insight promises to transform the way we see the interplay of nature and nurture. Innate also explores the genetic and neural underpinnings of disorders such as autism, schizophrenia, and epilepsy, and how our understanding of these conditions is being revolutionized. In addition, the book examines the social and ethical implications of these ideas and of new technologies that may soon offer the means to predict or manipulate human traits. Compelling and original, Innate will change the way you think about why and how we are who we are."--Provided by the publisher.

Download or read book Winning Defense written by Del Harris and published by McGraw-Hill Companies. This book was released on 1993 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The key to success for any basketball team is defense, and the heart of most successful defensive systems is half-court man-to-man defense. "Winning Defense" is the ultimate book on this crucial aspect of the game. Much more than a basic primer, this advanced guide explores the intricacies of transition and half-court defense that give winning teams their edge. It's all here: trapping, switching, cutters, screeners, post defense, and defending two- and three-man exercises. Out-of-bound and end-of-game situations. Drills to enhance individual and team technique. A section on rebounding, the finishing touch to any successful defensive effort, and a unique approach to transition defense. Since it's publication in 1993, "Winning Defense" has become the bible of half-court man-to-man defense for serious and successful coaches and players everywhere! Del Harris is one of basketball's most respected, honored, and experienced teachers. He began his career as an elementary coach in Johnson City, Tennessee, and progressed through the high school, college, international, and professional ranks--enjoying great success at each stop. Harris took the NBA's Houston Rockets, who had finished the regular season with a winning percentage below .500 to the finals of the NBA playoffs in 1981 in one of the great Cinderella stories in league history. He also led the Milwaukee Bucks to the playoffs in each of his four seasons as head coach. As the head coach of the Los Angeles Lakers, he nearly duplicated his 1981 miracle season in 1995, leading a team expected to go nowhere to the playoffs, where they lost in a thrilling six-game Western Conference semifinal series to San Antonio. As a result, he was named1994-95 NBA Coach of the Year. A noted speaker and clinician, Harris has written two previous basketball books and a sports novel for young readers. His is a member of the Indiana Basketball Hall of Fame.

Download or read book More Than a Game written by Phil Jackson and published by Seven Stories Press. This book was released on 2011-01-04 with total page 328 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: More than a Game covers the years that follow the one featured in the ESPN documentary series "The Last Dance." After leaving the Bulls at the end of the 1997-1998 season—the year featured in the new ESPN documentary series "The Last Dance"—Phil Jackson had one year off and started to write this book—together with his old friend, fellow player and coach, the basketball novelist Charley Rosen. Then Phil took the LA Lakers coaching job, Rosen followed him there, and by the time they finished writing this book it was 2000 and Phil had won yet another NBA championship, the first of five he would win with his new team. In More than a Game, Jackson and Rosen look backward to their origins as players and coaches, forward to the future of the game of basketball, and linger in the moving target of the present—lavishing page after page on the Triangle Offense and all the ways it reveals the essence of the game of basketball they both love so much. This is Jackson in his prime, transitioning from the Bulls to the Lakers, a master of the art of winning, who would go on to claim more NBA championships, eleven, than any other coach in NBA history. As he writes in More than a Game of his newest championship team: "We won because our fundamentals were sound, because Shaq was so dominant and Kobe was so creative, but we also won because we developed a certain confidence in our ability to win."

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: All organizations, institutions, business processes, markets and strategies have one aim in common: the reduction of transaction costs. This aim is pursued relentlessly in practice, and has been perceived to bring about drastic changes, especially in the recent global market and the cyber economy. This book analyzes and describes “transactions” as a model, on the basis of which organizations, institutions and business processes can be appropriately shaped. It tracks transaction costs to enable a scientific approach instead of a widely used “state-of-the-art” approach, working to bridge the gap between theory and practice. This open access book analyzes and describes “transactions” as a model...

Download or read book The State written by Anthony De Jasay and published by Collected Papers of Anthony de. This book was released on 1998 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The State is a brilliant analysis of some of the fundamental issues of modern political thought from the perspective, not of individuals or subjects, but of the state itself. The author poses the query, "What would you do if you were the state?" The state usually is understood as an instrument, not a personality, and it is presumed to exist so that people can achieve their common ends. However, Jasay asks, what if we suppose the state to have a will and ends of its own? To answer these questions, the author traces the logical and historical progression of the state from a modest-sized protector of life and property through its development into an "agile seducer of democratic majorities, to the welfare-dispensing drudge that it is in many countries today ... Is the rational next step a totalitarian enhancement of its power?" The State presents what has been termed "a disturbingly logical 'agenda' for the state in pursuit of its 'self-fulfillment.'"--Inside jacket flap.
