Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This handbook assists students in understanding statistics and the types of decisions that the selection of a test entails. At the same time the volume will assist a broad audience by reviewing the research process; by presenting fundamental statistical concepts and methods; by identifying writings on library management using statistical analyses; by discussing statistical applications to library management, decision making and problem solving; and by familiarizing library managers with statistical tables and analysis and graphics software. The purpose of this volume is to supplement statistical textbooks and to inform library managers and library school students about the application of selected statistical tests and the interpretation of statistical findings. This volume presents basic statistical and research concepts clearly. It is not intended as a textbook that identifies numerous statistical tests and merely details their computations. Rather, the book complements the pool of existing textbooks by placing selected statistical applications in the context of the research process and library decision.

In this unique and useful book, Vaughan clearly explains the statistical methods used in information science research, focusing on basic logic rather than mathematical intricacies. Her emphasis is on the meaning of statistics, when and how to apply them, and how to interpret the results of statistical analysis. Through the use of real-world examples, she shows how statistics can be used to improve services, make better decisions, and conduct more effective research. Whether you are doing statistical analysis or simply need to better understand the statistics you encounter in professional literature and the media, this book will be a valuable addition to your personal toolkit. Includes more than 80 helpful figures and tables, 7 appendices, bibliography, index.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An insider’s guide to data librarianship packed full of practical examples and advice for any library and information professional learning to deal with data. Interest in data has been growing in recent years. Support for this peculiar class of digital information – its use, preservation and curation, and how to support researchers’ production and consumption of it in ever greater volumes to create new knowledge, is needed more than ever. Many librarians and information professionals are finding their working life is pulling them toward data support or research data management but lack the skills required. The Data Librarian’s Handbook, written by two data librarians with over 30 years’ combined experience, unpicks the everyday role of the data librarian and offers practical guidance on how to collect, curate and crunch data for economic, social and scientific purposes. With contemporary case studies from a range of institutions and disciplines, tips for best practice, study aids and links to key resources, this book is a must-read for all new entrants to the field, library and information students and working professionals. Key topics covered include: • the evolution of data libraries and data archives • handling data compared to other forms of information • managing and curating data to ensure effective use and longevity • how to incorporate data literacy into mainstream library instruction and information literacy training • how to develop an effective institutional research data management (RDM) policy and infrastructure • how to support and review a data management plan (DMP) for a project, a key requirement for most research funders • approaches for developing, managing and promoting data repositories • handling and sharing confidential or sensitive data • supporting open scholarship and open science, ensuring data are discoverable, accessible, intelligible and assessable. This title is for the practising data librarian, possibly new in their post with little experience of providing data support. It is also for managers and policy-makers, public service librarians, research data management coordinators and data support staff. It will also appeal to students and lecturers in iSchools and other library and information degree programmes where academic research support is taught.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Interpreting Basic Statistics gives students valuable practice in interpreting statistical reporting as it actually appears in peer-reviewed journals. New to the eighth edition: A broader array of basic statistical concepts is covered, especially to better reflect the New Statistics. Journal excerpts have been updated to reflect current styles in statistical reporting. A stronger emphasis on data visualizations has been added. The statistical exercises have been re-organized into units to facilitate ease of use and understanding. About this book Each of the 64 exercises gives a brief excerpt of statistical reporting from a published research article, and begins with guidelines for interpreting the statistics in the excerpt. The questions on the excerpts promote learning by requiring students to interpret information in tables and figures, perform simple calculations to further their interpretations, critique data-reporting techniques, and evaluate procedures used to collect data. Each exercise covers a limited number of statistics, making it easy to coordinate the exercises with lectures and a main textbook. The questions in each exercise are divided into two parts: (1) Factual Questions and (2) Questions for Discussion. The factual questions require careful reading for details, while the discussion questions show that interpreting statistics is more than a mathematical exercise. These questions require students to apply good judgment as well as statistical reasoning in arriving at appropriate interpretations.
