Book excerpt: The subject of this book is the Federal Income Taxation of individuals, meaning human beings. It briefly touches on the taxation of partnerships, trusts and corporations, largely for the purpose of enhancing your understanding of how individuals are taxed when they own interests in such entities. The Federal Income Tax on individuals provides the great preponderance of the federal government's revenues. The other primary sources of government revenue, aside from borrowing money and Social Security taxes, are corporate income taxes, transfer taxes imposed on gifts and the estates of decedents, and so-called excise taxes. The latter are usually in the nature of sales taxes on particular items, such as gasoline and diesel fuel, and some are just penalties under a gentler name. This book is limited to taxation of U.S. citizens who reside in the United States, subject to some sideways glances at the implications of departing the United States or coming to it as an alien. This book is traditional in nature, and has many of the usual landmark cases on the subject. It contains numerous study problems and requires selected readings of the Internal Revenue Code and the Treasury Regulations.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book covers the basics of the federal income taxation of partnerships and corporations including the taxation of LLCs, LLPs and S corporations. In addition, it alludes to a short list of other business enterprises. It is designed to be taught as two major components: partnerships and corporations. Both components use the traditional "cradle-to-grave" approach. Because of their practical importance, the book makes reference to Social Security taxes and estate taxes. There is no discussion of State income taxes. Although the book is comparatively short, the materials are dense and are heavily supplemented with problems. The cases have been extensively edited, and most footnotes in the original cases have been eliminated without any explicit reference to the fact of their elimination, other than the words in this paragraph. Case and statute citations of the court and commentators, as well as footnotes, have been omitted without so specifying; numbered footnotes are from the original materials but do not retain the original numbering, except by accident. The book is rich with problems that are scattered along the way, rather than at the end of each chapter. They are not especially difficult and are designed to build confidence while at the same time forcing students to review the central Code provisions and pertinent regulations.

Book excerpt: Completely updated to reflect the 2017 Tax Cuts and Jobs Act, the Third Edition of Federal Income Tax: A Contemporary Approach continues its successful integration of several modern platforms to introduce students to the federal income taxation of individuals. As before, the book takes three passes through the system, each in increasing detail. The first pass, in two short chapters, introduces the basic structure of the federal income tax through the computation of taxable income. It lets students see the overall structure early in their study and gives context to new concepts as they are introduced. The second pass, consuming two larger chapters, walks through the concepts of gross income and deductions, respectively. The final pass, consuming seven chapters, then builds on the material from the first four chapters, considering exclusions, timing issues, characterization, and advanced discussion of property transactions, personal expenses, dual-use expenses, and tax shelters. The text includes dozens of review questions, hundreds of self-assessment questions, and nearly 100 detailed problems for class discussion, all of which require students to apply Code and Regulation provisions to real-life fact patterns. The book also includes links to several instructional videos to reinforce student comprehension. Like other titles in the Interactive Casebook Series, the accompanying electronic version gives student immediate access to cited cases, statutes, and articles.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This new edition continues the format of prior editions, which has been widely popular with professors & students of tax law. This casebook employs a unique problem method, which has proved to be a most effective, challenging & satisfying way to study the federal income taxation of individuals. Rather than providing all the answers, Taxation of Individual Income requires students to make conclusions on their own about tax law on the basis of the materials provided. It thus provides excellent training for students who in practice will be required to independently analyze facts & synthesize rules & concepts. An important & distinguishing feature of this casebook is the detailed overview included in each chapter. The overview, as its name suggests, provides the students with a helpful synopsis of the specific areas of the law addressed by the chapter. The overview is followed by selected cases, administrative rulings, & legislative history excerpts. After reading all of these materials, students can then return to the beginning of the chapter, attempt to resolve the problems, & conduct a self-assessment of their understanding of the issues & concepts.
