Book Synopsis Base Flow Distribution by : Lawton Williams Furness
Download or read book Base Flow Distribution written by Lawton Williams Furness and published by . This book was released on 1966 with total page 158 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The distribution or variable occurrence of base flow has been defined at 105 sites on the streams of Kansas and adjoining areas. Methods have also been developed for estimating base flow on other streams that drain areas of 100 to 5,000 square miles. Base flow, as used in this report, is that portion of total streamflow exclusive of direct surface runoff and consists largely of ground-water contributions to the streams. Many farms, industries, and cities rely on base flow for their dependable supplies of water. Typical of streams in the mid-continent areas, the total streamflow in Kansas is essentially that of base flow during 40 to 80 percent of the days. Thus, knowledge of the distribution of base flow will help Kansans to obtain optimum benefit from water resources"--Abstract.
Book Synopsis Encyclopedia of Snow, Ice and Glaciers by : Vijay P. Singh
Download or read book Encyclopedia of Snow, Ice and Glaciers written by Vijay P. Singh and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2011-06-29 with total page 1301 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The earth’s cryosphere, which includes snow, glaciers, ice caps, ice sheets, ice shelves, sea ice, river and lake ice, and permafrost, contains about 75% of the earth’s fresh water. It exists at almost all latitudes, from the tropics to the poles, and plays a vital role in controlling the global climate system. It also provides direct visible evidence of the effect of climate change, and, therefore, requires proper understanding of its complex dynamics. This encyclopedia mainly focuses on the various aspects of snow, ice and glaciers, but also covers other cryospheric branches, and provides up-to-date information and basic concepts on relevant topics. It includes alphabetically arranged and professionally written, comprehensive and authoritative academic articles by well-known international experts in individual fields. The encyclopedia contains a broad spectrum of topics, ranging from the atmospheric processes responsible for snow formation; transformation of snow to ice and changes in their properties; classification of ice and glaciers and their worldwide distribution; glaciation and ice ages; glacier dynamics; glacier surface and subsurface characteristics; geomorphic processes and landscape formation; hydrology and sedimentary systems; permafrost degradation; hazards caused by cryospheric changes; and trends of glacier retreat on the global scale along with the impact of climate change. This book can serve as a source of reference at the undergraduate and graduate level and help to better understand snow, ice and glaciers. It will also be an indispensable tool containing specialized literature for geologists, geographers, climatologists, hydrologists, and water resources engineers; as well as for those who are engaged in the practice of agricultural and civil engineering, earth sciences, environmental sciences and engineering, ecosystem management, and other relevant subjects.

Book Synopsis Streamflow Characteristics by : H.C. Riggs
Download or read book Streamflow Characteristics written by H.C. Riggs and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 1985-01-01 with total page 263 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Reliable estimates of streamflow characteristics are needed for planning, design, and operation of works for providing water supplies and for protection from flooding. This book brings together some of the most useful estimation methods - those that are simple, practical, and require only commonly available or readily obtainable data, and which give results comparable in accuracy with those derived from more sophisticated methods. The author describes how streamflow data are collected, how the characteristics are computed, how they are changed by man's activities, and how they are used in planning and design. Chapters describing statistical principles and techniques, and the effects of various climatic and physiographic factors on streamflow are included. The analytical methods are described in sufficient detail that the reader can apply them to his data. Further applications and other techniques are referred to in bibliographies.
