Dire che l’universo è razionale significa dedurlo dalla ragione, o mostrarlo conforme a questa. Per Spinoza, esso non si può chiamare assurdo (questa è una valutazione umana) ma nemmeno razionale (anche questa lo è). Esso è interamente al di là di tali categorie. È semplicemente. La dottrina di Spinoza costituisce dunque uno sforzo potente per assoggettare la ragione alle cose, all’Essere com’è, anziché assoggettare o far dipendere le cose dalla ragione o spirito: proprio il contrario di Kant e dell’idealismo. Non vi è una ragione sopra le cose, le cose non sorgono da una ragione, ma da una cieca Sostanza senza intelletto, né volontà, né fini; questa negazione della teleologia è radicale negazione del deismo e insieme del razionalismo.” Giuseppe Rensi (1871-1941) fu filosofo e avvocato. Fin da giovane s’interessò di politica iscrivendosi al Partito socialista. Nel 1898 partecipò ai moti milanesi e, per sfuggire alla condanna seguita alla cruenta repressione del generale Beccaris, si rifugiò in Svizzera. Nel 1908 rientrò in Italia dove iniziò la carriera di avvocato e ricoprì la cattedra di Filosofia morale all’università di Genova. La crisi sopraggiunta a seguito della Prima guerra mondiale inclinò il suo pensiero verso posizioni scettiche; la sua riflessione è caratterizzata da forti tinte pessimistiche e ateistiche. Brevemente incuriosito dal fascismo al suo esordio ne divenne uno dei maggiori oppositori quando il fascismo rivelò la sua vera natura; tra i firmatari del Manifesto degli intellettuali antifascisti, venne perciò espulso dall’Università dal regime. Arrestato assieme alla moglie, solo grazie a un falso articolo dell’amico Emanuele Sella che ne annunciava la morte, fu rimesso in libertà dal duce che nel frattempo temeva la cattiva immagine all’estero data da questo arresto. Venne quindi “confinato” presso il centro bibliografico dell’Università di Genova per compilare schede sulla storia ligure. Tuttavia egli continuò le sue pubblicazioni. Nel 1941 venne ricoverato, ma i bombardamenti su Genova obbligarono a rinviare un intervento chirurgico decretando la sua morte. Durante il funerale i pochi discepoli che seguivano il feretro vennero schedati e dispersi dai fascisti. L’edizione di Spinoza che presentiamo comprende entrambe le versioni, quella del 1929 e quella del 1941.

Se questo è vero per tutti i classici, lo è a maggior ragione per Baruch Spinoza. Spinoza è un filosofo atipico, un crocevia di culture, una vera eccezione nell’itinerario del pensiero occidentale. Del resto, pochi autori sono stati così interpretati, pochi hanno rappresentato un riferimento così intenso per le epoche successive. Allora chi è davvero Baruch Spinoza? Il pensiero di Spinoza si nutre di diverse fonti: ebraica, filosofica, scientifica, solo per citare le principali. Ridurlo a una sola di queste è impossibile, perché l’una si intreccia nell’altra in una sintesi che ha pochi eguali per altezza, profondità e originalità. Tutte sono presenti nell’opera del filosofo, ma rispetto a ciascuna si registra un’eccedenza, che rende il Maledictus (uno dei tanti nomi attribuiti a Spinoza) un pensatore eccentrico e forse unico proprio per questo. Di Spinoza abbiamo infinite interpretazioni, ma da lui non nasce una scuola. Non si può parlare di uno spinozismo negli stessi termini in cui parliamo di un cartesianesimo, di un kantismo, di un hegelismo. Forse per questo la sua figura ha potuto ispirare intellettuali così diversi: dai medici e gli scienziati positivisti del Seicento e Settecento ai grandi metafisici a lui successivi, da Fichte a Hegel, da Schopenhauer a Fechner, passando per le correnti libertarie prerivoluzionarie. Forse, però, Spinoza non ha voluto parlare a nessuno. La sua è stata una riflessione solitaria, volta alla ricerca della felicità, non certo intesa come godimento dell’istante. Questo, che può apparire un limite, è in realtà la grande virtù che gli ha permesso di attraversare indenne le varie epoche e arrivare fino a noi.

Ma il lettore potrà meglio destreggiarsi tra le pagine dei due sommi capolavori spinoziani grazie alle altre opere qui pubblicate, di non certo minor rilievo: il Trattato sull’emendazione dell’intelletto e il Breve trattato costituiscono infatti i prodromi essenziali per comprendere le linee guida dell’Etica, così come i Principi della filosofia di Cartesio e Pensieri Metafisici offrono un materiale prezioso per valutare il rapporto di Spinoza con il suo grande maestro Cartesio. Ma è altresì dal Trattato politico che emerge più compiutamente l’idea spinoziana della scienza politica intesa come architettura delle istituzioni, così come è dal Compendio di grammatica ebraica – qui per la prima volta offerto in traduzione italiana – che si rileva la straordinaria attenzione dedicata dal filosofo alla lingua santa. L’Epistolario costituisce invece il luogo privilegiato non solo per seguire gli importanti rapporti di amicizia e scambio culturale con i suoi contemporanei (tra cui Leibniz), ma anche per vedere discusse le principali difficoltà sorte intorno alle opere che il filosofo andava elaborando. Il volume è infine corredato dai due brevi trattatelli Sull’arcobaleno e Sul calcolo delle probabilità – anch’essi per la prima volta tradotti in italiano – che danno un’idea dell’attenzione di Spinoza per le conquiste più avanzate della scienza moderna. La Prefazione, tratta dagli Opera Posthuma, conclude quindi offrendo una testimonianza del modo in cui le opere del pensatore olandese erano state offerte per la prima volta al pubblico nel 1677. L’ampio saggio introduttivo, le note esplicative, gli indici, nonché l’amplissima bibliografia ragionata, che dà conto in modo esaustivo degli studi apparsi su Spinoza tra il 1978 e il 2008, offrono al lettore altrettanti strumenti per agevolarlo nello studio di un corpus di opere tanto complesso quanto affascinante.

The object in taking the Ethics as much as possible out of the geometrical form, was not to improve upon the author's text; it was to give the lay reader a text of Spinoza he would find pleasanter to read and easier to understand. To the practice of popularization, Spinoza, one may confidently feel, would not be averse. He himself gave a short popular statement of his philosophy in the Political Treatise. The lay reader of philosophy is chiefly, if not wholly, interested in grasping a philosophic point of view. He is not interested in highly meticulous details, and still less is he interested in checking up the author's statements to see if the author is consistent with himself. He takes such consistency, even if unwarrantedly, for granted. A continuous reading of the original Ethics, even on a single topic, is impossible. The subject-matter is coherent, but the propositions do not hang together. By omitting the formal statement of the propositions; by omitting many of the demonstrations and almost all cross-references; by grouping related sections of the Ethics (with selections from the Letters and the Improvement of the Understanding) under sectional headings, the text has been made more continuous. It is the only time, probably, dismembering a treatise actually made it more unified. In an Appendix, the sources of the selections from the Ethics are summarily indicated. It would be a meaningless burden on the text to make full acknowledgments in footnotes. For the same reason, there has been almost no attempt made to show, by means of the conventional devices, the re-arrangements and abridgements that have been made. Every care has been taken not to distort in any way the meaning of the text. And that is all that is important in a volume of this kind. Wherever possible Spinoza's own chapter headings have been retained; and some of the sectional headings have either been taken from, or have been based upon expressions in the text. It would have been more in keeping with contemporary form to use the title On Historical Method or The New History instead of Of the Interpretation of Scripture; a chapter on Race Superiority would sound more important than one on The Vocation of the Hebrews; but such modernizing changes were not made because the aim has been to give the reader a text as faithful to the original as the character of this volume would allow.

Book excerpt: Men would never be superstitious, if they could govern all their circumstances by set rules, or if they were always favoured by fortune: but being frequently driven into straits where rules are useless, and being often kept fluctuating pitiably between hope and fear by the uncertainty of fortune's greedily coveted favours, they are consequently, for the most part, very prone to credulity. The human mind is readily swayed this way or that in times of doubt, especially when hope and fear are struggling for the mastery, though usually it is boastful, over - confident, and vain. This as a general fact I suppose everyone knows, though few, I believe, know their own nature; no one can have lived in the world without observing that most people, when in prosperity, are so over-brimming with wisdom (however inexperienced they may be), that they take every offer of advice as a personal insult, whereas in adversity they know not where to turn, but beg and pray for counsel from every passer-by. No plan is then too futile, too absurd, or too fatuous for their adoption; the most frivolous causes will raise them to hope, or plunge them into despair - if anything happens during their fright which reminds them of some past good or ill, they think it portends a happy or unhappy issue, and therefore (though it may have proved abortive a hundred times before) style it a lucky or unlucky omen. Anything which excites their astonishment they believe to be a portent signifying the anger of the gods or of the Supreme Being, and, mistaking superstition for religion, account it impious not to avert the evil with prayer and sacrifice. Signs and wonders of this sort they conjure up perpetually, till one might think Nature as mad as themselves, they interpret her so fantastically. Thus it is brought prominently before us, that superstition's chief victims are those persons who greedily covet temporal advantages; they it is, who (especially when they are in danger, and cannot help themselves) are wont with Prayers and womanish tears to implore help from God: upbraiding Reason as blind, because she cannot show a sure path to the shadows they pursue, and rejecting human wisdom as vain; but believing the phantoms of imagination, dreams, and other childish absurdities, to be the very oracles of Heaven. As though God had turned away from the wise, and written His decrees, not in the mind of man but in the entrails of beasts, or left them to be proclaimed by the inspiration and instinct of fools, madmen, and birds. Such is the unreason to which terror can drive mankind!

Questo pamphlet, da leggere in poco più di un’ora, raccoglie i brani più significativi del capolavoro di Baruch, il Trattato teologico-politico; un sistema di pensiero che è stato il primo ad aver scardinato le consolanti certezze della religione cristiana e a influenzare tutto il successivo pensiero in Occidente. L’opera e la vita di Spinoza sono ancora oggi un esempio e un’esperienza per un mondo che sembra aver gettato al vento l’eredità di Westfalia.
