The astute clinician must be aware of these factors in order to help the patient with hypersensitivity and/or chronic degenerative disease." Chapter 2 Drawing on a vast amount of data and clinical cases attended to by the authors in their own medical practices, this volume examines the complex relation that environmental pollution has with chronic degenerative diseases. It considers its impact on the body’s vast communication networks and what excessive overload does to homeostatic mechanisms. The authors factor in both general and specific environmental loads and how they alter and trigger genetic and non-genetic responses. Volume 1 begins with an overview of the physiologic basis of homeostasis, exploring various ways that the body deals with toxins and the networks it uses to communicate news of assault and makes provisions for adaptation. The text delves into the connective tissue matrix and considers vascular, neural, endocrine, and immune system responses to a variety of noxious assaults. "Both innate and acquired immunity can be and are altered in individuals with chemical sensitivity and chronic degenerative disease. ...With pollutant overload changes can occur in the lymphatic channels, the lymph nodes, and lymph node egress as well as the lymphatic cells. Changes in mucosal function and the effects of the autonomic nervous system are evident with environmental pollutant overload." Chapter 3 Written by two very knowledgeable clinicians, it brings together research of the highest caliber and provides extensive discussions involving sophisticated biochemical, endocrine, and neural science. The text provides clinicians with the knowledge to understand the triggering and processes of degenerative diseases, so that they might develop more efficient treatment and prevention plans. The book also supplies the knowledge and perspective that can lead research to more effective treatments. Four Shades of Gray offers the first book-length analysis of Amazon’s Kindle and its impact on publishing. Simon Peter Rowberry recounts how Amazon built the infrastructure for a new generation of digital publications, then considers the consequences of having a single company control the direction of the publishing industry. Exploring the platform from the perspectives of technology, texts, and uses, he shows how the Kindle challenges traditional notions of platforms as discrete entities. He argues that Amazon’s influence extends beyond “disruptive technology” to embed itself in all aspects of the publishing trade; yet despite industry pushback, he says, the Kindle has had a positive influence on publishing. Rowberry documents the first decade of the Kindle with case studies of Kindle Popular Highlights, an account of the digitization of books published after 1922, and a discussion of how Amazon’s patent filings reflect a shift in priorities. Rowberry argues that while it was initially convenient for the book trade to outsource ebook development to Amazon, doing so has had adverse consequences for publishers in the mid- and long term, limiting opportunities for developing an inclusive and forward-thinking digital platform. While it has forced publishers to embrace digital forms, the Kindle has also empowered some previously marginalized readerships. Although it is still too early to judge the long-term impact of ebooks compared with that of the older technologies of clay tablets, the printing press, and offset printing, the shockwaves of the Kindle continue to shape publishing.

Book excerpt: Commanding a cult following among horror fans, Italian film director Dario Argento is best known for his work in two closely related genres, the crime thriller and supernatural horror, as well as his influence on modern horror and slasher movies. In his four decades of filmmaking, Argento has displayed a commitment to innovation, from his directorial debut with 1970's suspense thriller The Bird with the Crystal Plumage to 2009's Giallo. His films, like the lurid yellow-covered murder-mystery novels they are inspired by, follow the suspense tradition of hard-boiled American detective fiction while incorporating baroque scenes of violence and excess. While considerations of Argento's films often describe them as irrational nightmares, L. Andrew Cooper uses controversies and theories about the films' reflections on sadism, gender, sexuality, psychoanalysis, aestheticism, and genre to declare the anti-rational logic of Argento's oeuvre. Approaching the films as rhetorical statements made through extremes of sound and vision, Cooper places Argento in a tradition of aestheticized horror that includes De Sade, De Quincey, Poe, and Hitchcock. Analyzing individual images and sequences as well as larger narrative structures, he reveals how the director's stylistic excesses, often condemned for glorifying misogyny and other forms of violence, offer productive resistance to the cinema's visual, narrative, and political norms.
