Book Synopsis The Secret War in El Paso by : Charles H. Harris
Download or read book The Secret War in El Paso written by Charles H. Harris and published by University of New Mexico Press. This book was released on 2016-04-25 with total page 561 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Winner of the 2010 Spur Award for Best Contemporary Nonfiction from Western Writers of America The Mexican Revolution could not have succeeded without the use of American territory as a secret base of operations, a source of munitions, money, and volunteers, a refuge for personnel, an arena for propaganda, and a market for revolutionary loot. El Paso, the largest and most important American city on the Mexican border during this time, was the scene of many clandestine operations as American businesses and the U.S. federal government sought to maintain their influences in Mexico and protect national interest while keeping an eye on key Revolutionary figures. In addition, the city served as refuge to a cast of characters that included revolutionists, adventurers, smugglers, gunrunners, counterfeiters, propagandists, secret agents, double agents, criminals, and confidence men. Using 80,000 pages of previously classified FBI documents on the Mexican Revolution and hundreds of Mexican secret agent reports from El Paso and Ciudad Juarez in the Mexican Ministry of Foreign Relations archive, Charles Harris and Louis Sadler examine the mechanics of rebellion in a town where factional loyalty was fragile and treachery was elevated to an art form. As a case study, this slice of El Paso's, and America's, history adds new dimensions to what is known about the Mexican Revolution.
Book Synopsis The Plan de San Diego by : Charles H Harris
Download or read book The Plan de San Diego written by Charles H Harris and published by U of Nebraska Press. This book was released on 2013-07-01 with total page 381 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Plan of San Diego, a rebellion proposed in 1915 to overthrow the U.S. government in the Southwest and establish a Hispanic republic in its stead, remains one of the most tantalizing documents of the Mexican Revolution. The plan called for an insurrection of Mexicans, Mexican Americans, and African Americans in support of the Mexican Revolution and the waging of a genocidal war against Anglos. The resulting violence approached a race war and has usually been portrayed as a Hispanic struggle for liberation brutally crushed by the Texas Rangers, among others. The Plan de San Diego: Tejano Rebellion, Mexican Intrigue, based on newly available archival documents, is a revisionist interpretation focusing on both south Texas and Mexico. Charles H. Harris III and Louis R. Sadler argue convincingly that the insurrection in Texas was made possible by support from Mexico when it suited the regime of President Venustiano Carranza, who co-opted and manipulated the plan and its supporters for his own political and diplomatic purposes in support of the Mexican Revolution. The study examines the papers of Augustín Garza, a leading promoter of the plan, as well as recently released and hitherto unexamined archival material from the Federal Bureau of Investigation documenting the day-to-day events of the conflict.

Download or read book Urban Underworlds written by Thomas Heise and published by Rutgers University Press. This book was released on 2011 with total page 308 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Urban Underworlds is an exploration of city spaces, pathologized identities, lurid fears, and American literature. Surveying one hundred years of history, and fusing sociology, urban planning, and criminology with literary and cultural studies, it chronicles how and why marginalized populations-immigrant Americans in the Lower East Side, gays and lesbians in Greenwich Village and downtown Los Angeles, the black underclass in Harlem and Chicago, and the new urban poor dispersed across American cities-have been selectively targeted as "urban underworlds" and their neighborhoods.

Book excerpt: In Mobilize!, vivid characterization and crackling dialogue carry the story. The U.S Congress, lulled by the near absence of terrorist acts by the scattered remnants of al-Qaeda, votes draconian reductions in the armed forces. After the assassination of US President Downs, incoming President Wyatt calls for massive mobilization. An Islamic fanatic, the self styled Sleyman III, the Modern Magnificent after the sixteenth century Sultan of the Ottoman Empire, introduces il-Dauli, "the Empire", uniting al-Qaeda remnants across southern Asia. He boasts a successful attack on USS Stennis in the Persian Gulf, assassination of the Saudi king, and the capture of Saudi and U.S. Air Force assets. Meanwhile, China threatens Taiwan. Naval Reserve Captain Karl Wilhelm Swenson, Naval Aviator, Boeing test pilot and field office director is ordered to the recommissioning party for USS Boxer. Swensons son, Harm, defects to Canada to avoid conscription but Canada enacts the draft. Drafted into the Canadian Army and assigned to the NATO Stabilization Force (SFor) in Croatia, he meets the charming Katja Vrbovec. Swensons daughter Karen is designated Naval Aviator and assigned to a fighter/attack squadron. While Captain Swenson builds Boxer's air detachments and deploys to WestPac to deter a Chinese invasion of Taiwan, Sleyman III sets his throne in ancient Topkapi Palace. In the battle for Taiwan independence Boxer is struck by guided bombs, killing the Phibron5 commander. Commodore Swenson assumes command. Back at Pearl Harbor he is shown a bold plan to snatch Sleyman III from Topkapi palace. ENS Karen Swenson is shot down near Taiwan. She survives but her love interest is killed. Corp. Harm Swenson, wounded in the battle for Sarajevo, is comforted by Katja. While in the Indian Ocean, Rear Admiral Swenson organizes and commands the international occupation of three Somali pirate havens. Several surprises develop in the final chapter.

Download or read book The Watchers written by Stephen Alford and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2012-11-13 with total page 417 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In a Europe aflame with wars of religion and dynastic conflicts, Elizabeth I came to the throne of a realm encircled by menace. To the great Catholic powers of France and Spain, England was a heretic pariah state, a canker to be cut away for the health of the greater body of Christendom. Elizabeth's government, defending God's true Church of England and its leader, the queen, could stop at nothing to defend itself. Headed by the brilliant, enigmatic, and widely feared Sir Francis Walsingham, the Elizabethan state deployed every dark art: spies, double agents, cryptography, and torture. Delving deeply into sixteenth-century archives, Stephen Alford offers a groundbreaking, chillingly vivid depiction of Elizabethan espionage, literally recovering it from the shadows. In his company we follow Her Majesty's agents through the streets of London and Rome, and into the dank cells of the Tower. We see the world as they saw it-ever unsure who could be trusted or when the fatal knock on their own door might come. The Watchers is a riveting exploration of loyalty, faith, betrayal, and deception with the highest possible stakes, in a world poised between the Middle Ages and modernity.
