Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Jonathon Lookadoo guides readers through the early Christian apocalypse known as the Shepherd of Hermas, providing a clear overview of the numerous literary, historical, and theological insights that this text contains for those researching early Christianity. Dividing his exploration into two sections, Lookadoo first introduces the Shepherd by providing an overview of the text to those with limited familiarity, while also focusing on critical issues such as authorship, date, and the Shepherd's complex manuscript tradition and reception history. He then moves to examine the interpretation of particular passages in detail, and by close exploration of theological and literary features he is able to contextualize the Shepherd alongside contemporary contexts. This volume covers the important thematic issues in the Shepherd, and also provides a fresh perspective that arises from a thoroughly textual focus; in so doing, Lookadoo enables readers to engage both with the Shepherd itself and the scholarship that surrounds the text.

Book excerpt: "In this study, Aaron Milavec comprehensively examines how the first-century pastoral manual known as the Didache enumerated the step-by-step training of converts for the full, active participation in the earliest Jewish-Christian communities. Milavec shows how the Didache can, in turn, illuminate our understanding of how these first Christian men and women organized their community life socially, religiously, and politically in order to safeguard its members from the challenges of the surrounding Roman, pagan society of the first-century Mediterranean basin. He argues not only that the Didache's textual and contextual clues demonstrate the document's organic unity from beginning to end, but also that it dates from a period before the gospels were written and had gained acceptance."--BOOK JACKET.Title Summary field provided by Blackwell North America, Inc. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Epistle of Barnabas explores the multifaceted spiritual interpretations and theological beliefs of the Epistle of Barnabas, moving beyond a reductive consideration of its Two Ways Tradition, or focus on its anti-Jewish use of Scripture. Lookadoo considers the epistle's authorship, dating, and opponents, alongside detailed analysis of literary connection and scholarly discourse, which brings clarity and understanding to this fascinating early Christian text. With a fresh English translation of the Greek text, this book is a well-researched and nuanced interpretation of the text, crucial for students of early Christianity and illuminating for anyone seeking to understand the origins of Christianity.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Barnabas, Hermas and the Didache: Being the Donnellan Lectures Delivered Before the University of Dublin in 1920 The ultimate aim of these Lectures is to reach a point of view from which the literary character and the historical value of the Didache, or Teaching of the Apostles, can be justly estimated. The study of the Epistle attributed to the Apostle Barnabas goes to show that its closing section, which treats of the "Two Ways," is wholly in character with the rest of the Epistle and is almost certainly the original composition of this rabbinically-minded author. The study of the Shepherd will suggest that Hermas kew the "Two Ways" in the form in which it is found in the Epistle of Barnabas. The Didache in its opening section offers us the "Two Ways" of the Epistle of Barnabas with an improved arrangement of its precepts and with modifications introduced from the shepherd of Hermas as well as from the Sermon on the Mount. Moreover the closing section of the Didache has borrowed from the earlier part of the Epistle of Barnabas. The use of Barnabas and Hermas was recognised at once by Bryennius the first editor of the Didache in 1883, and by Dr Harnack in his notable edition of 1881; and it was allowed that for this reason the Didache could not be placed earlier than c. 140-160. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Shawn J. Wilhite's commentary on the Didache complements the study of early Christianity through historical, literary, and theological readings of the Apostolic Fathers, seeking to be mindful of critical scholarship while commenting on a final-form text. The Didache includes a brief introduction to this relevant text, the use of Scripture by the Didachist, and the theology of the Didache. The commentary proceeds section by section with a close ear to the text of the Didache, relevant early Christian literature, and current scholarship.
