Book Synopsis The Grand Food Bargain by : Kevin D. Walker
Download or read book The Grand Food Bargain written by Kevin D. Walker and published by Island Press. This book was released on 2019-03-26 with total page 346 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When it comes to food, Americans seem to have a pretty great deal. Our grocery stores are overflowing with countless varieties of convenient products. But like most bargains that are too good to be true, the modern food system relies on an illusion. It depends on endless abundance, but the planet has its limits. So too does a healthcare system that must absorb rising rates of diabetes and obesity. So too do the workers who must labor harder and faster for less pay. Through beautifully-told stories from around the world, Kevin Walker reveals the unintended consequences of our myopic focus on quantity over quality. A trip to a Costa Rica plantation shows how the Cavendish banana became the most common fruit in the world and also one of the most vulnerable to disease. Walker’s early career in agribusiness taught him how pressure to sell more and more fertilizer obscured what that growth did to waterways. His family farm illustrates how an unquestioning belief in “free markets” undercut opportunity in his hometown. By the end of the journey, we not only understand how the drive to produce ever more food became hardwired into the American psyche, but why shifting our mindset is essential. It starts, Walker argues, with remembering that what we eat affects the wider world. If each of us decides that bigger isn’t always better, we can renegotiate the grand food bargain, one individual decision at a time.
Book Synopsis The Desert Gardener's Calendar by : George Brookbank
Download or read book The Desert Gardener's Calendar written by George Brookbank and published by University of Arizona Press. This book was released on 2016-12-01 with total page 169 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What's the best time to plant or prune? When should you fertilize fruit trees? What's the earliest date to set out tomato plants? Gardeners in the desert Southwest can't rely on books that try to cover the whole country. Summer heat, less rain, and shorter, unreliable growing seasons are important factors in the desert. That's why The Desert Gardener's Calendar can be essential to gardening success. Whether you're raising vegetables, nursing citrus trees, or just trying to keep your front yard looking its best, you'll find that this handy book gives you a valuable month-by-month perspective on the year. It helps you to focus on necessary activities and reminds you of simple tasks you might overlook. It's especially valuable for people who've moved to the desert regions from other parts of the country and follow old gardening dates that seldom apply to their new home. The Desert Gardener's Calendar is a guide to the maintenance you need to do to keep your garden flourishing and your landscape attractive throughout the year. It combines the month-by-month gardening and landscaping activities from two separate books by George Brookbank—Desert Gardening, Fruits and Vegetables and Desert Landscaping—and was created in response to readers who have found the calendar sections of those books especially invaluable. And because not all deserts are the same, Brookbank is careful to point out differences in scheduling encountered by gardeners in low- and middle-elevation regions in California and the Southwest. "I believe," says the author, "that if you use this calendar and let your judgment become more accurate with experience, you'll soon be doing everything right." Although that might suggest a day when you don't need this book, chances are good that, if you're a desert gardener, right now you do.
Book Synopsis A Collective Bargain by : John Schierer
Download or read book A Collective Bargain written by John Schierer and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2019-04-11 with total page 337 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Recent events show a deep-seated fear and frustration from the Rust Belt and those who used to populate our factories. Who are these people and how did we get here? How did both unions and management fail the factory worker? How are our once-vibrant city neighborhoods impacted by this seismic shift? A Collective Bargain examines the rich character of factory life and explores how the negotiating process is impacted by many factors beyond the control of even those who sit at the bargaining table. The novel takes place primarily in the grittiest sections of industrial New Jersey. Trey Bensen is a neighborhood kid returned to the local factory where he serves as a deft labor administrator and contract negotiator on behalf of management. The plant- Grean Machining- is part of a larger group of machine shops. Grean is privately held and owned by brothers seeking to sell the business and cash out, leaving their grimy industrial past behind. One buyer makes a lucrative offer contingent upon a new and more favorable labor contract. To accomplish this, the Grean brothers send their corporate “fixer” and family friend Harlowe Mikkelsen to make the deal. Mikkelsen casts his lot with Larry “The Turk” Turkel- International Union agent with an agenda quite different from the local workers in the plant. In an effort to sort through his conflicted feelings as both a management negotiator and a part of the community, Trey seeks the advice of his dying father, Earl. Earl Bensen seemed to be everywhere and seen everything in the labor movement in the preceding five decades. These life stories ultimately inspire Trey to take actions in the seams between the union and management resulting in unexpected and violent consequences. Anyone who seeks to give real identity and a face to the American factory worker will enjoy the rich characters who work to make a living at Grean Machining.
