Download or read book Game Theory 101: Bargaining written by William Spaniel and published by . This book was released on 2014-11-24 with total page 220 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Tomorrow, you will go to your boss and ask for a raise. You need at least $20 per hour to stay; your boss is unwilling to pay you any more than $50. You should reach an agreement-but will the wage be closer to $20 or $50?This is the essence of bargaining. Using the same crystal clear logic of the Game Theory 101 series, William Spaniel explains the sources of "bargaining power"-the strength that allows you to successfully demand wages closer to $50. In doing so, he uncovers the bargaining in everything, including car negotiations, Breaking Bad, Deal or No Deal, McDonald's Monopoly, sports free agency, cable companies, security deposits, war, diamond manufacturing, labor unions, government shutdowns, nuclear showdowns, price fixing, unemployment benefits, legal battles, and police pullovers. With bargaining so pervasive, this is one book you can't afford not to have.

Download or read book Labour written by Jean Vercherand and published by Springer. This book was released on 2014-06-25 with total page 352 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Labour: A Heterodox Approach provides a theoretical reconstruction of the labour and job market by examining it in a rich historical context. It explores the fundamental implications of the theories of consumption and growth and aims at solving the difficulties raised by the dominant economic theories (neoclassical, Keynesian, supply side) by taking into account the dimension of the historical conflict of the labour market and the public intervention that results from it, such as the construction of a specific legal framework that is to say, labour law. The work focuses on providing a description of conflict and intervention, the market's leading characteristics, and demonstrates that they can be interpreted by introducing two major remedial hypotheses in economic fundamentals. It also contributes to solving several theoretical controversies and highlights the two main perspectives on the economic regulation of the labour market.

How does gossip spread so quickly? Are we all related through six degrees of separation? There is a growing awareness of the complex networks that pervade modern society. We see them in the rapid growth of the internet, the ease of global communication, the swift spread of news and information, and in the way epidemics and financial crises develop with startling speed and intensity. Book Synopsis Ethnic Bargaining by : Erin K. Jenne
Download or read book Ethnic Bargaining written by Erin K. Jenne and published by Cornell University Press. This book was released on 2014-05-30 with total page 262 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ethnic Bargaining introduces a theory of minority politics that blends comparative analysis and field research in the postcommunist countries of East Central Europe with insights from rational choice. Erin K. Jenne finds that claims by ethnic minorities have become more frequent since 1945 even though nation-states have been on the whole more responsive to groups than in earlier periods. Minorities that perceive an increase in their bargaining power will tend to radicalize their demands, she argues, from affirmative action to regional autonomy to secession, in an effort to attract ever greater concessions from the central government. The language of self-determination and minority rights originally adopted by the Great Powers to redraw boundaries after World War I was later used to facilitate the process of decolonization. Jenne believes that in the 1960s various ethnic minorities began to use the same discourse to pressure national governments into transfer payments and power-sharing arrangements. Violence against minorities was actually in some cases fueled by this politicization of ethnic difference.Jenne uses a rationalist theory of bargaining to examine the dynamics of ethnic cleavage in the cases of the Sudeten Germans in interwar Czechoslovakia; Slovaks and Moravians in postcommunist Czechoslovakia; the Hungarians in Romania, Slovakia, and Vojvodina; and the Albanians in Kosovo. Throughout, she challenges the conventional wisdom that partisan intervention is an effective mechanism for protecting minorities and preventing or resolving internal conflict.

Book Synopsis The Role of Collective Bargaining in the Global Economy by : Susan Hayter

This book was released on 2011-01-01 with total page 337 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book examines the ways in which collective bargaining addresses a variety of workplace concerns in the context of today.s global economy. Globalization can contribute to growth and development, but as the recent financial crisis demonstrated, it also puts employment, earnings and labourstandards at risk. This book examines the role that collective bargaining plays in ensuring that workers are able to obtain a fair share of the benefits arising from participation in the global economy and in providing a measure of security against the risk to employment and wages. It focuses on a commonly neglected side of the story and demonstrates the positivecontribution that collective bargaining can make to both economic and social goals. The various contributions examine how this fundamental principle and right at work is realized in different countries and how its practice can be reinforced across borders. They highlight the numerouschallenges in this regard and the critically important role that governments play in rebalancing bargaining power in a global economy. The chapters are written in an accessible style and deal with practical subjects, including employment security, workplace change and productivity and working time.
Book Synopsis Raising Expectations (and Raising Hell) by : Jane McAlevey
Download or read book Raising Expectations (and Raising Hell) written by Jane McAlevey and published by Verso Books. This book was released on 2014-05-06 with total page 333 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This “breath-taking trip through the union-organizing scene of America in the 21st century” reveals the victories and unconventional strategies of a renowned—and notorious—militant union organizer (Barbara Ehrenreich, author of Nickel and Dimed) In 1995, in the first contested election in the history of the AFL-CIO, John Sweeney won the presidency of the nation’s largest labor federation, promising renewal and resurgence. Today, less than 7 percent of American private-sector workers belong to a union, the lowest percentage since the beginning of the twentieth century, and public employee collective bargaining has been dealt devastating blows in Wisconsin and elsewhere. What happened? Jane McAlevey is famous—and notorious—in the American labor movement as the hard-charging organizer who racked up a string of victories at a time when union leaders said winning wasn’t possible. Then she was bounced from the movement, a victim of the high-level internecine warfare that has torn apart organized labor. In this engrossing and funny narrative—that reflects the personality of its charismatic, wisecracking author—McAlevey tells the story of a number of dramatic organizing and contract victories, and the unconventional strategies that helped achieve them. Raising Expectations (and Raising Hell) argues that labor can be revived, but only if the movement acknowledges its mistakes and fully commits to deep organizing, participatory education, militancy, and an approach to workers and their communities that more resembles the campaigns of the 1930s—in short, social movement unionism that involves raising workers’ expectations (while raising hell).

Download or read book Power and Tactics in International Negotiation written by William Mark Habeeb and published by . This book was released on 1988 with total page 186 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Focusing explicitly on negotiations between states unequal in power capabilities, Habeeb proposes a mode for understanding such asymmetrical dialogues and their outcomes. He argues that conceptualizing power primarily in terms military capabilities is misleading. Although such capabilities are important determinants of negotiation outcomes, they operate on the basis of the parties' commitments to achieve a settlement; their abilities to unilaterally control an outcome; and the number and feasibility of each party's alternatives to continuing the negotiations.
