Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Worship is dialogue. It is more than that, but it is not less than that. The way Baptists have worshiped for three and a half centuries demonstrates this consistently, in spite of their penchant for freedom and autonomy. No one tells Baptists how to order their worship services. They don't have a common liturgy that they must follow, and yet their services look remarkably similar. This is largely due to two controlling factors in their worship: The Bible that they embrace as inspired, inerrant, authoritative, and sufficient; and the Christ-revealing gospel that is contained within its pages. When the word of God is followed closely, a shape for worship order begins to emerge. It is the same "gospel-shape" that is found throughout the Bible. When the word of God is applied to a worship service in which God and his people are engaged in a worship conversation, a consistent contour of gospel elements and content begins to emerge that reveals the glory of the Christ we gather to worship. He is so glorious that when we behold him, we are transformed into the same image from one degree to another. This is the power of corporate worship (2 Cor 3).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Baptists have a long and rich heritage of congregational song. The hymns Baptists have sung and the books from which they have sung them have been shaping forces for Baptist theology, worship, and piety. Baptist authors and composers have provided songs that have made an impact not only among Baptists in America but also across denominational and geographic lines. Congregational singing continues to be a key component of Baptist worship in the twenty-first century. Beginning with an overview of the British background, this book is a survey of the history of Baptist hymnody in America from Baptist beginnings in the New World to the present. Its intent is to help the reader better understand the background against which current Baptist congregational song practices operate. Unlike earlier writings on the subject, this book provides both comprehensive coverage and a continuous narrative. It gives thorough attention to the major Baptist bodies in America as well as calling attention to the contributions of significant smaller groups. The British Baptist background is dealt with in an introductory section. The book also includes many texts and tunes as illustrations of the topics being discussed and focuses on some of the contributions of Baptist authors and composers to the repertory of congregational song. Book excerpt: A comprehensive worship supplement that will fit many churches' needs for quality modern music resources, arranged seasonally and thematically. The 330 hymns and songs included represent many influential writers and styles including selections from Bernadette Farrell, John Bell, Stuart Townsend, Michael Forster, Graham Kendrick, Carl Daw, Taizé, Marty Haugen, Timothy Dudley-Smith, Shirley Erena-Murray, Keith Getty, Martin Leckebusch and many more. Designed to help churches broaden their repertoire substantially without the cost of replacing standard hymn books. Many standard hymn books in use today may seem old-fashioned, even those recently published. Keeping up to date is tricky since many new compositions may enjoy a brief spell of popularity, only to quickly drop out of use altogether! Here, an experienced team of UK church musicians and liturgists, representing a wide variety of tastes, has selected the very best of recently written hymns, songs and short chant compositions. Many of these selections have proven staying power and are widely used in both traditional and informal styles of worship, but often will not be found in other hymn books.

Book excerpt: This book is about next-level praise and worship for every believer. Starting your day with the praises of God on your heart and in your mouth will transform your perspective, no matter where you are in life or your Christian experience. This book is not only a devotional, but also a teaching tool that will help you see God in a fresh, new way. Jesus does not require great music to worship Him, but He does require that our worship to Him be done in spirit and in truth. The goal of this book is to encourage not only starting your day with worship, but also learning more about what the true worship of God entails for every believer. This book is intended to encourage all believers to go deeper in their perception of praise and worship, and move beyond the Sunday morning musical experience.

Book excerpt: “What is at stake is authenticity. . . . Sooner or later Christians tire of public meetings that are profoundly inauthentic, regardless of how well (or poorly) arranged, directed, performed. We long to meet, corporately, with the living and majestic God and to offer him the praise that is his due.”—D. A. CarsonWorship is a hot topic, but the ways that Christians from different traditions view it vary greatly. What is worship? More important, what does it look like in action, both in our corporate gatherings and in our daily lives? These concerns—the blending of principle and practice—are what Worship by the Book addresses.Cutting through cultural clichés, D. A. Carson, Mark Ashton, Kent Hughes, and Timothy Keller explore, respectively:· Worship Under the Word· Following in Cranmer’s Footsteps· Free Church Worship: The Challenge of Freedom· Reformed Worship in the Global City “This is not a comprehensive theology of worship,” writes Carson. “Still less is it a sociological analysis of current trends or a minister’s manual chockfull of ‘how to’ instructions.” Rather, this book offers pastors, other congregational leaders, and seminary students a thought-provoking biblical theology of worship, followed by a look at how three very different traditions of churchmanship might move from this theological base to a better understanding of corporate worship. Running the gamut from biblical theology to historical assessment all the way to sample service sheets, Worship by the Book shows how local churches in diverse traditions can foster corporate worship that is God-honoring, Word-revering, heartfelt, and historically and culturally informed.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Concerned to think intentionally about liturgy in Baptist life and thought, this book aims to address the practices of Christian worship in a theological light, examining how each brings individual Christian believers and communities of faith to a greater understanding and embodiment of the gospel. In this mode, worship becomes a seamless garment that forms disciples of Christ and opens out toward the world. In short, theology, worship, and mission all intersect in the liturgical life of the body of Christ. In addition to theological engagement with liturgical practices, Gathering Together links reflection to praxis by offering sample patterns as a guide for reenvisioning the shape of Baptist (and other free church) worship.
