Book II. c. xviii., says: I have written seven books on Baptism against the Donatists, who strive to defend themselves by the authority of the most blessed bishop and martyr Cyprian; in which I show that nothing is so effectual for the refutation of the Donatists, and for shutting their mouths directly from upholding their schism against the Catholic Church, as the letters and act of Cyprian. Book Synopsis Baptism and the Baptists by : Anthony R. Cross
Download or read book Baptism and the Baptists written by Anthony R. Cross and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2017-06-20 with total page 551 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since its first publication in 2000, Baptism and the Baptists has become the definitive work on the subject. It examines the theology and practice of believers' baptism among twentieth-century Baptists associated with the Baptist Union of Great Britain, and identifies the major influences which have led to its development. In the nineteenth and early twentieth century, the majority of Baptists concentrated predominantly on the mode and subjects of baptism (immersion and believers), understanding the rite merely as an ordinance--the believer's personal profession of faith in Christ. However, in continuity with a tradition of Baptists going back as far as the first Baptists in the second and third decades of the seventeenth century, there were also a significant number of ministers and scholars who saw the inadequacy of this view of baptism both biblically and theologically. This sacramental view developed and grew throughout the twentieth century, and influenced a resurgence of baptismal sacramentalism in the early twenty-first century among Baptists not just in Britain, but also in North America, Europe, and further afield.
Book Synopsis Understanding Four Views on Baptism by : Zondervan,
Download or read book Understanding Four Views on Baptism written by Zondervan, and published by Zondervan. This book was released on 2009-08-30 with total page 226 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Gain an understanding of baptism from four main traditional perspectives. Of all the sacraments, the practice of baptism is often the most disputed. Christians hold different views of its exact significance, who should receive baptism and how old they need to be, the practice of rebaptism, and baptism as a requirement for church membership. In Understanding Four Views on Baptism, four historic views on baptism are considered in depth: Baptist view: baptism of the professing regenerate by immersion (presented by Thomas J. Nettles) Reformed view: infant baptism of children of the covenant (presented by Richard Pratt Jr.) Lutheran view: infant baptism by sprinkling as a regenerative act (presented by Robert Kolb) Church of Christ view: believers' baptism on the occasion of regeneration by immersion (presented by John Castelein) Each view is presented by its proponent, then critiqued and defended in dialogue with the book's other contributors. Here is an ideal setting in which you can consider the strengths and weaknesses of each stance and arrive at your own informed conclusion. The Counterpoints series presents a comparison and critique of scholarly views on topics important to Christians that are both fair-minded and respectful of the biblical text. Each volume is a one-stop reference that allows readers to evaluate the different positions on a specific issue and form their own, educated opinion.

Download or read book Baptism written by Gordon L. Heath and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2011-01-10 with total page 290 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this book, Gordon Heath and James Dvorak bring together three traditions that are not often brought together under one roof: Orthodox, Catholic, and Protestant. Authors from a number of Protestant traditions, as well as one from Orthodoxy and one from Catholicism, have contributed to a volume that provides a grander vision of the diversity of the church as well as a deeper sense of the differences that divide and the similarities that unite. This book provides a much-needed and helpful forum for a variety of Christian positions to be presented and defended so that Christians can at least operate out of understanding rather than ignorance. The authors also hope that such understanding will nudge people closer together as baptized followers of Jesus Christ. The gracious spirit of each contributor to this volume indicates that it is possible. All contributors in this volume write about their own tradition, and a number write not just as academics but also as ordained leaders in their churches. The insider's perspective that each author brings allows passionate presentations of each perspective but also committed defenses of the same.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What does a common baptism mean for the unity of the churches? Do the churches in fact share in a common baptism? This volume is the first comprehensive study of the meaning of baptism for church unity to be written by an ecumenical group of theologians -- Orthodox, Catholic, Lutheran, Reformed, Anglican, and Baptist. These essays explore such themes as how baptism relates to the communion shared by the churches and the relationship of baptism and church unity as found in the New Testament, in the ecumenical dialogues, and in the liturgies of the churches.
Book Synopsis One Baptism by : World Council of Churches
Download or read book One Baptism written by World Council of Churches and published by . This book was released on 2011 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As the most recent contribution to the churches' quest for Christian unity, One Baptism was a decade in the making. It is a study document from the World Council of Churches' Commission on Faith and Order that invites further dialogue among Christians concerning baptism within the One Church of Jesus Christ. This new book finds inspiration most directly from the 1982 Agreed Statement Baptism, Eucharist and Ministry (BEM) and the churches' responses to it. The book explores the close relationship between baptism and the believer's lifelong growth in Christ, suggesting that this link provides a strong argument for greater mutual recognition of baptism. One Baptism also addresses issues in baptismal understanding and practice that cause controversies within and among churches and hinder mutual recognition. (Series: Faith and Order Papers - No. 210)
Book Synopsis Paul on Baptism by : Nicholas Taylor
Download or read book Paul on Baptism written by Nicholas Taylor and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2017-09-15 with total page 221 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Drawing on recent scholarship on the Pauline tradition within early Christianity, this book examines Paul's theology of baptism and highlights its practical application in ministry today. It considers what the rite represented and effected, in the light of the social and cultural milieu in which his letters were written, and of his strategies for mission and the formation and nurture of new Christian communities. The need to integrate recent scholarship with contemporary pastoral issues, and to do so in a theologically reflective way, is acute. Using a wide range of social scientific approaches to the ancient world and Christian origins, including identity, religious conversion, and ritual, the book explores the implications of this reconstruction for contemporary issues of baptismal practice, pastoral care and mission, aiming to bring the insights of specialists to those working on the frontline of pastoral practice.
Book Synopsis Missionary Baptism & Evangelical Unity by : J. Cameron Fraser
Download or read book Missionary Baptism & Evangelical Unity written by J. Cameron Fraser and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2021-10-15 with total page 99 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The concept of missionary baptism is based on the household baptism of converts and their families described in the New Testament. This is most commonly experienced today in missionary situations, when entire families become Christians. Building on the work of nineteenth-century Scottish theologian William Cunningham, this study explores some implications for the connection between believers' baptism, infant baptism, baby dedication, and Christian unity, particularly among evangelicals.
