Book Synopsis A Greek-English Lexicon of the New Testament and Other Early Christian Literature by : Walter Bauer
Download or read book A Greek-English Lexicon of the New Testament and Other Early Christian Literature written by Walter Bauer and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2010-11-02 with total page 1189 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Described as an "invaluable reference work" (Classical Philology) and "a tool indispensable for the study of early Christian literature" (Religious Studies Review) in its previous edition, this new updated American edition of Walter Bauer's Wörterbuch zu den Schriften des Neuen Testaments builds on its predecessor's staggering deposit of extraordinary erudition relating to Greek literature from all periods. Including entries for many more words, the new edition also lists more than 25,000 additional references to classical, intertestamental, Early Christian, and modern literature. In this edition, Frederick W. Danker's broad knowledge of Greco-Roman literature, as well as papyri and epigraphs, provides a more panoramic view of the world of Jesus and the New Testament. Danker has also introduced a more consistent mode of reference citation, and has provided a composite list of abbreviations to facilitate easy access to this wealth of information. Perhaps the single most important lexical innovation of Danker's edition is its inclusion of extended definitions for Greek terms. For instance, a key meaning of "episkopos" was defined in the second American edition as overseer; Danker defines it as "one who has the responsibility of safeguarding or seeing to it that something is done in the correct way, guardian." Such extended definitions give a fuller sense of the word in question, which will help avoid both anachronisms and confusion among users of the lexicon who may not be native speakers of English. Danker's edition of Bauer's Wörterbuch will be an indispensable guide for Biblical and classical scholars, ministers, seminarians, and translators.

Book Synopsis Baptism in the New Testament by : G. R. Beasley-Murray
Download or read book Baptism in the New Testament written by G. R. Beasley-Murray and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2006-08-01 with total page 433 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Baptism In The New Testament In this thorough and well-documented study of the sacrament of Holy Baptism, G.R. Beasley-Murray presents a critical defense of the doctrine of believers' baptism on the basis of the New Testament evidences. The author--one of the leading New Testament scholars in England--is himself a Baptist; but his discussion transcends denominatioal lines. Beasley-Murray begins by discussing various rites that precede Christian baptism historically, and analyzes the relationship between these earlier rites and baptism. From these antecedents--Old Testament ritual washings, Jewish proselyte baptism, the lustrations practiced at Qumran, and the baptism of John the Baptist--the author proceeds to the foundations of Christian baptism in the career of Jesus, its emergence as recorded in the Acts of the Apostles, and its development in the New Testament epistolary literature. In his consideration of the doctrine of Christian baptism as ariculated in the New Testament, Beasley-Murray focuses his attention on the necessity of baptism and its relationship to grace, faith, the Spirit, the church, ethics, and hope. A careful examination of the rise and significance of infant baptism follows, and the study concludes with a selected bibliography and several indices.

Book Synopsis How My Mind Has Changed by : David Heim
Download or read book How My Mind Has Changed written by David Heim and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2012-11-06 with total page 123 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this book, which continues a renowned series of essays published in the Christian Century, thirteen prominent Christian theologians speak--in unusually personal voices--of their journeys of faith and of the questions that have shaped their writing and scholarship. Reflecting a variety of theological positions and approaches, these essays feature decisive encounters with prayer, scriptural tradition, struggles for justice, and religious and cultural diversity. Some of these "changes of mind" include a change in denominational allegiance, others reflect a shift in method or emphasis prompted by experiences inside or outside the church. Some of the essays display a long-term theological project that unfolds or deepens in changing circumstances. All display the renewed vitality of theology in the postmodern context. Contributors include Paul Griffiths, Sarah Coakley, Mark Noll, Nicholas Wolterstorff, Carol Zaleski, Kathryn Tanner, Scott Cairns, Robert Jenson, Emilie Townes, Peter Ochs, David Ford, Douglas John Hall, and Max Stackhouse.
Book Synopsis Expositions of the Psalms 1-32 (Vol. 1) by : Saint Augustine (of Hippo)

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "As the psalms are a microcosm of the Old Testament, so the Expositions of the Psalms can be seen as a microcosm of Augustinian thought. In the Book of Psalms are to be found the history of the people of Israel, the theology and spirituality of the Old Covenant, and a treasury of human experience expressed in prayer and poetry. So too does the work of expounding the psalms recapitulate and focus the experiences of Augustine's personal life, his theological reflections and his pastoral concerns as Bishop of Hippo."--Publisher's website.
Download or read book Swear to God written by Scott Hahn and published by Image. This book was released on 2005-10-18 with total page 242 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The most solemn, majestic, and beautiful gifts that Jesus Christ gave to the world are His sacraments. He endowed them with unprecedented and unparalleled power—power to change lives, save souls, and share God’s very life. The sacraments are the ordinary means by which God directs the course of each human life and all of world history. The Church celebrates seven sacraments: baptism, Eucharist, confirmation, matrimony, holy orders, confession, and anointing of the sick. Each was established by Jesus for the sake of salvation. When Jesus spoke of the sacraments, He made clear that they were essential: Unless one is born of water and the Spirit, he cannot enter the kingdom of God (Jn 3:5) . . . unless you eat of the flesh of the Son of man and drink His blood, you have no life in you (Jn 6: 53). In Swear to God, Dr. Scott Hahn explores the richness of Christ’s sacraments—their doctrine, history, symbols, and rituals. Drawing upon the Bible and the Church’s tradition, he shows how God’s covenants—with Adam, Noah, Abraham, Moses, and David—became the driving forces in history. When Jesus came to fulfill all these covenants, He established a new covenant, with greater power than ever before. Christians are God’s children now. Joined to Christ by baptism, we can already share in the eternal life of the Trinity, a life we hope to know fully in heaven. But heaven is with us, even now, in the sacraments.
Book Synopsis Luke: Historian and Theologian by : I. Howard Marshall
Download or read book Luke: Historian and Theologian written by I. Howard Marshall and published by Paternoster. This book was released on 1970 with total page 248 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The writings of Luke (Luke-Acts) comprise over 28% of the whole New Testament -- even more than the extensive writings of his friend and companion, Paul, whose letters account for almost exactly a further 25%. This fact alone emphasizes the vital importance of the Lucan corpus to a true understanding of the doctrine as well as the history of apostolic times. There has been a growing awareness of the qualities of Luke as a historian, and in this book Dr. Marshall demonstrates that Luke's theology, which he summarizes as "the theology of salvation," is at least of equal stature and importance with his carefully compiled history. - Back cover
