Book Synopsis Nikkei in the Pacific Northwest by : Louis Fiset
Download or read book Nikkei in the Pacific Northwest written by Louis Fiset and published by University of Washington Press. This book was released on 2011-10-01 with total page 363 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Challenging the notion that Nikkei individuals before and during World War II were helpless pawns manipulated by forces beyond their control, the diverse essays in this rich collection focus on the theme of resistance within Japanese American and Japanese Canadian communities to twentieth-century political, cultural, and legal discrimination. They illustrate how Nikkei groups were mobilized to fight discrimination through assertive legal challenges, community participation, skillful print publicity, and political and economic organization. Comprised of all-new and original research, this is the first anthology to highlight the contributions and histories of Nikkei within the entire Pacific Northwest, including British Columbia.

Download or read book Africa.com written by Jean-Louis Roy and published by Mosaic Press. This book was released on 2021-05-19 with total page 166 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A pioneering work, full of detail and depth of knowledge about Africa ... a must read! Two powerful forces converged to shift global development in the last three decades from the West to the East and Asia. These same forces now make Africa the "construction site of the century." Africa in the decade 2040- 2050 will have a population of 2.5 billion people. Together with China and India, Africa will surely affect our planet's future! "Africans are and will continue to be the beneficiaries of two dramatic global transformations: first, the shift of wealth from the West to the East and the South; second, the impact of the universalization of the digital age. The OECD stated that the first transformation is " ... the most important shift in the history of humanity;"the second marks the emergence of new forms of human civilization ... This book documents these transformations now taking hold in Africa, however incomplete , unequal and difficult. But these changes are robust and decisive. In Africa, like everywhere else in the world, strategies and actions must be put into place to seize the moment which is so unique in global history." - Jean-Louis Roy, from the IntroductionJean-Louis Roy is a prolific author and renowned diplomat, public figure, journalist, professor with a life-long interest and commitment to Africa. He was the editor-in-chief of the important Montreal daily newspaper Le Devoir; Delegate General of Quebec in Paris, France; Secretary General of La Francophonie; President of Law and Democracy, and President and Director General of BAnQ. His forthcoming book is a collection of his essays on Africa spanning the four decades, 1971-2011. His previous publications with Mosaic Press are Manso Musa (2019), The Age of Diversity: The New Cultural Map (2016), Ontario in Transition: Achievements and Challenges (2013), The Future of French: Cultural Competition in the 21st Century (2010).

Book Synopsis Marriage Migrants of Japanese Women in Australia by : Takeshi Hamano
Download or read book Marriage Migrants of Japanese Women in Australia written by Takeshi Hamano and published by Springer. This book was released on 2019-05-30 with total page 179 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book investigates the experience of Japanese women who have immigrated to Australia through marriage to a local partner. Based on long-term participant observations gathered with a Japanese ethnic association in Sydney, and on in-depth interviews with the association’s members, it examines the ways in which the women remould themselves in Australia by constructing gendered selves that reflect their unique migratory circumstances through cross-border marriage. In turn, the book argues that the women tend to embrace expressions of Japanese femininity that they once viewed negatively, and that this is due to their lack of social skills and access to the cultural capital of mainstream Australian society. Re-molding the self through conventional Japanese notions of gender ironically provides them with a convincing identity: that of minority migrant women. Nevertheless, by analyzing these women’s engagement with a Japanese ethnic association in a suburb of Sydney, the book also reveals a nuanced sense of ambivalence; a tension between the women’s Japanese community and their lives in Australia. Accordingly, the book provides a fresh perspective on interdisciplinary issues of gender and migration in a globalized world, and engages with a wide range of academic disciplines including: sociology of migration; sociology of culture; cultural anthropology; cultural studies; Japanese studies; Asian studies; gender studies; family studies; migration studies and qualitative methodologies.

Book Synopsis Contradictory Impulses by : Greg Donaghy
Download or read book Contradictory Impulses written by Greg Donaghy and published by UBC Press. This book was released on 2009-01-01 with total page 287 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Patricia E. Roy is the winner of the 2013 Lifetime Achievement Award, Canadian Historical Association. Canada's early participation in the Asia-Pacific region was hindered by "contradictory impulses" shaping its approach. For over half a century, racist restrictions curtailed immigration from Japan, even as Canadians manoeuvred for access to the fabled wealth of the Orient. Canada's relations with Japan have changed profoundly since then. In Contradictory Impulses, leading scholars draw upon the most recent archival research to examine an important bilateral relationship that has matured in fits and starts over the past century. As they makes clear, the two countries' political, economic, and diplomatic interests are now more closely aligned than ever before and wrapped up in a web of reinforcing cultural and social ties. Contradictory Impulses is a comprehensive study of the social, political, and economic interactions between Canada and Japan from the late nineteenth century until today.

Download or read book Japan after the Economic Miracle written by P. Bowles and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 397 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As Japan comes to grips with a decade of economic malaise after its spectacular post-war growth record, how will Japanese society react? Contributors to this volume examine the challenges ahead for Japan in the fields of politics, economics, sociology, environment and business. This multidisciplinary inquiry looks for areas of continuity and for new directions in government, business and social policy and practice. Also examined is how Western students should approach the study of Japan; what new directions should institutions take to ensure that students learn about the `real' Japan? Written by Canadian academics, the articles in this volume will be of interest to academics and policy-makers studying or teaching about contemporary Japan.
