Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper presents a Joint Staff Assessment of the Interim Poverty Reduction Strategy Paper (I-PRSP) for Bangladesh. The I-PRSP lays out a broader vision for the future along with a medium-term economic strategy. The IMF staff considers that Bangladesh’s I-PRSP constitutes a cohesive policy framework to increase growth and reduce poverty. However, some weaknesses remain to be addressed in the transition to the full PRSP. It will be important to more sharply prioritize near-term policies in key sectors and antipoverty programs, and incorporate their cost into the medium-term budget framework.

Book Synopsis Development Agenda and Donor Influence in South Asia by : Mohammad Mizanur Rahman
Download or read book Development Agenda and Donor Influence in South Asia written by Mohammad Mizanur Rahman and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-06-27 with total page 170 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Policy ownership of development agenda emerged as an important aspect in international development cooperation during the 1990s in the wake of evident failures of reform initiatives in developing countries steered by donor agencies, particularly the international financial institutions (IFIs), the World Bank (WB) and the International Monetary Fund (IMF). The principal focus of this book is to examine Bangladesh’s policy ownership in its PRSP by broadly analyzing the dynamics in the formulation process and examining the principal actors’ contribution to the formulation process. This book also deals with several other dimensions of foreign aid and its changing features including the shifts in WB-IMF’s approach to development cooperation. This book argues that the WB-IMF strongly influence Bangladesh’s development strategies and agendas and in general the WB-IMF have not changed much in their aid relationship despite clear limitations of their previous reform models. Building on Bangladesh’s current level of development the book advocates that Bangladesh needs to adopt a new model for development agenda setting. Illustrating the influences of donor communities on the creation of development strategies in developing countries, this book presents a macro dynamics of the political economy of international development cooperation. It will be of interest to academics and professionals working on political economy, governance, public policy and development cooperation as well as South Asian Studies.

Download or read book Attacking Poverty written by and published by World Bank Publications. This book was released on 2000 with total page 356 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: At the start of each decade the World Development Report focuses on poverty reduction. The World Development Report, now in its twenty-third edition, proposes an empowerment-security-opportunity framework of action to reduce poverty in the first decades of the twenty-first century. It views poverty as a multidimensional phenonmenon arising out of complex interactions between assets, markets, and institutions. This Report shows how the experience of poverty reduction in the last fifteen years has been remarkably diverse and how this experience has provided useful lessons as well as warnings against simplistic universal policies and interventions. It shows how current global trends present extraordinary opportunities for poverty reduction but also cause extraordinary risks, including growing inequality, marginalization, and social explosions. The World Development Report 2000/2001 explores the challenge of managing these risks in order to make the most of the opportunities for poverty reduction.

Book excerpt: Guyana continues to make progress in laying the foundation for poverty reduction, but at a very slow pace. Critical issues remain unresolved. The political situation remains problematic, with the two main parties divided along ethnic lines. The most recent mechanism to facilitate a constructive working arrangement between the two parties has broken down and is unlikely to be revived in its current form. Much then depends on the ability of parliament and other institutions to work effectively, which will require that they be strengthened considerably. The Government has scheduled local elections for September 2004, but it is yet to be seen if these can be carried out peacefully, and with the cooperation of the opposition. As the economy remains dependent on certain primary products-bauxite, sugar and rice-which, with the exception of sugar, provide a limited potential for future growth, there is need to diversify the economy to create jobs in other sectors. Establishing an environment for sustained growth remains the main challenge for the Government in the future. Linked with this is the continued need to improve the rule o f law, transparency, and governance in order to provide an efficient and transparent framework within which the private sector can operate. The progress report provides a revised policy matrix that focuses on key issues and updates the matrix in the original PRSP. However, given the downward revision of the overall macroeconomic and expenditure framework,

Book Synopsis Empowerment and Poverty Reduction by : Deepa Narayan-Parker
Download or read book Empowerment and Poverty Reduction written by Deepa Narayan-Parker and published by World Bank Publications. This book was released on 2002-01-01 with total page 412 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This publication offers a framework for the empowerment of people living in poverty throughout the world that concentrates on increasing people's freedom of choice and action to shape their own lives. Based on analysis of practical experiences, the book identifies four key elements to support empowerment: information, inclusion and participation, improved accountability and local organisational capacity. This framework is then applied to five areas of action to improve development effectiveness: provision of basic services, improved local governance, improved national governance, pro-poor market development, and access to justice and legal aid. It also offers twenty 'tools and practices' which concentrate on a wide-range of topics to support the empowerment of the poor.
