Book excerpt: Coded-Modulation Techniques for Fading Channels provides the reader with a sound background for the application of bandwidth-efficient coded-modulation techniques in fading channels. The book systematically presents recent developments in the field, which has grown rapidly in recent years, and provides a solid frame of reference for further research in this area. During the past decade there has been a proliferation of research in the area of bandwidth-efficient coded-modulation techniques. The primary advantage of these schemes over modulation schemes employing traditional error correcting codes is their ability to improve the performance of the communication system without bandwidth expansion. This property makes them a suitable choice for channels which are limited in both power and bandwidth. A typical example of such channels is a mobile satellite channel, where it is desired to accommodate a large number of users in a given bandwidth with a power which is constrained by the physical size of the satellite and by the vehicle's antenna. Coded-Modulation Techniques for Fading Channels is an excellent reference for researchers and practicing engineers, and may be used as a text for advanced courses on the subject.

Book excerpt: Almost two decades ago, by using random coding bound arguments, it was proved that considerable progress in the power efficiency of digital communication could be obtained by treating coding and modulation as a single entity. These ideas were carried further in the manifestation of Trellis Coded Modulation (TCM) techniques. Sine then, the idea of TCM has expanded greatly beyond the type of schemes originally presented, and has given way to a considerable amount of research activity, both theoretical and applied, and to the implementation of several TCM techniques in new generations of modems. Block-Coded Modulation (BCM) was discovered at about the same time as TCM, and is currently attracting considerable interest as a possible alternative to TCM for some applications. A thorough overview on both kinds of coded modulation is discussed in this volume. It assesses the status and the prospects of coded modulation and of bandwidth-efficient transmission, shedding light on the future avenue of theory and applications in these exciting areas.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Trellis-coded modulation (TCM), when combined with interleaving, is known to give good error performance in fading channels. Previously, the only analytical guide was an upper bound, which could be very loose over the range of the signal to noise ratio of interest. This paper presents an exact expression for the pairwise error event probability of TCM transmitted over Rayleigh fading channels. It includes PSK and multilevel QAM codes, as well as coherent and partially coherent detection. The paper also studies several coded modulation schemes this way.

Download or read book Performance Analysis of an Alternative to Trellis Coded Modulation for Waveforms Transmitted Over a Channel with Pulse-Noise Interference written by and published by . This book was released on 2008 with total page 41 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The performance of a communication system having almost the same spectral efficiency as a trellis coded modulation (TCM) system with r = 2/3 convolutional encoding and 8-ary phase-shift keying (8-PSK) modulation is investigated. TCM is a common solution to the problem of adding forward error correction (FEC) coding without an attendant increase in channel bandwidth. The primary drawback to TCM is that the achievable coding gain is limited by the maximum practical number of states in the convolutional encoder. The alternative system considered uses (63, 37) Reed-Solomon (RS) encoding. The six-bit symbols at the output of the Reed-Solomon encoder undergo serial-to-parallel conversion to two three-bit symbols, which are then independently transmitted on the in-phase (I) and quadrature (Q) component of the carrier using 8-ary biorthogonal keying (8-BOK). This system has a null-to-null bandwidth of 0.993Rb, which is 0.7% smaller than TCM with r = 2/3 convolutional encoding and 8-PSK modulation. The two waveforms are compared for the relatively benign case where additive white Gaussian noise (AWGN) is the only noise present as well as when pulse-noise interference (PNI) is present. It was found that both systems have almost the same performance in AWGN, but with PNI the alternative system has better performance.

Book Synopsis Low Spectral Efficiency Trellis Coded Modulation Systems by :
Download or read book Low Spectral Efficiency Trellis Coded Modulation Systems written by and published by . This book was released on 2006 with total page 81 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Trellis-coded modulation (TCM) is a known technique to increase the data rate without increasing the channel bandwidth when implementing error correction coding. TCM is a combination of M-ary modulation and error correction coding. This thesis investigates the performance of a low spectral efficiency TCM system, which is compared with three alternative systems having comparable bandwidth. The three alternative systems are all non-TCM systems and consist of QPSK with independent r=1/2 error correction coding on the in-phase and quadrature components, 8-ary biorthogonal keying (8-BOK) with r=2/3 error correction coding, and 16-BOK with r=3/4 error correction coding. The effects of both additive white Gaussian noise (AWGN) and pulse-noise interference (PNI) are considered. The TCM system shows much better than expected performance and significant resistance to PNI, and performance improves as the number of memory element increases. The alternative QPSK system with soft decision decoding (SDD) experiences significant degradation with PNI. The 8-BOK with r=2/3 error correction and 16-BOK with r=3/4 error correction systems occupy approximately the same bandwidth as the TCM system and show better performance in PNI than the alternative QPSK system.
