Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ballistic Missile and Aerospace Technology, Volume III: Propulsion, Space Science and Space Exploration covers the proceedings of the Sixth Symposium on Ballistic Missile and Aerospace Technology, held in University of Southern California, Los Angeles, on August 29-31, 1961. This book contains three parts encompassing 18 chapters that explore the components of the propulsion systems, space science and experiments, and exploration of the moon and planets. Part I demonstrates first the advantage of using factorial experimental designs for a wide variety of missile propulsion design problems. This topic is followed by an outline of the component designs of rocket design simulators and a systematic method for determination of ablation rates in a corrosive environment. This part also presents an analysis of the open cycle technique for the removal of afterheat from a nuclear rocket and the design conditions for convergent nozzles. Part II describes the determination of the magnetic dipole of TIROS II, a spin-stabilized meteorological satellite, as well as a method for the acquisition of meteorological data, which provides information not readily available on a global scale and/or in real time. Part III discusses the principles of small payload dropping for space exploration; the geological problems involved in the location of a lunar base; and the features of a planetary entry vehicle. This concluding part also examines the degree of radiation safety resulting from different lunar spacecraft design and mission operations and the feasibility of placing and maintaining space vehicles in the earth-moon libration points. Aerospace engineers and scientists will find this book invaluable.

Book excerpt: Ballistic Missile and Space Technology, Volume I: Design and Reliability, and Invited Addresses focuses on the advancements of processes, methodologies, and technologies involved in the design and reliability of space vehicles. The selection first offers information on optical masers and their aerospace application and the challenges of space exploration. Discussions focus on the challenges to the aerospace industries, manned and unmanned space flights, range of optical beams, signals from other planets, long distance transmission, and radar considerations. The text then takes a look at space and education and an engineering approach to missile/rocket optimization problems. The manuscript examines a practical method of selecting structural materials for multistage solid rocket vehicles on the basis of cost and radiation shielding of space vehicles by means of superconducting coils. Topics include coil design considerations, analysis of typical booster motor fabrication costs, fabrication processes, and design requirements. A new structural concept to capitalize on the potential light weight of beryllium and a comparison of launching methods for stationary satellites are also discussed. The selection is a dependable reference for astronauts and researchers interested in the design and reliability of space vehicles.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This work introduces the important emerging space powers of the world. Brian Harvey describes the origins of the Japanese space program, from rocket designs based on WW II German U-boats to tiny solid fuel 'pencil' rockets, which led to the launch of the first Japanese satellite in 1970. The next two chapters relate how Japan expanded its space program, developing small satellites into astronomical observatories and sending missions to the Moon, Mars, comet Halley, and asteroids. Chapter 4 describes how India's Vikram Sarabhai developed a sounding rocket program in the 1960s. The following chapter describes the expansion of the Indian space program. Chapter 6 relates how the Indian space program is looking ahead to the success of the moon probe Chandrayan, due to launch in 2008, and its first manned launching in 2014. Chapters 7, 8, and 9 demonstrate how, in Iran, communications and remote sensing drive space technology. Chapter 10 outlines Brazil's road to space, begun in the mid-1960's with the launch of the Sonda sounding rockets. The following two chapters describe Brazil's satellites and space launch systems and plans for the future. Chapters 13 and 14 study Israel's space industry. The next chapters look at the burgeoning space programs of North and South Korea. The book ends by contrasting and comparing all the space programs and speculating how they may evolve in the future. An appendix lists all launches and launch attempts to date of the emerging space powers.
