Book excerpt: Nanoscale Science, whose birth and further growth and development has been driven by the needs of the microelectronics industry on one hand, and by the sheer human curiosity on the other hand, has given researchers an unprecedented capability to design and construct devices whose function ality is based on quantum and mesoscopic effects. A necessary step in this process has been the development of reliable fabrication techniques in the nanometer scale: two-dimensional systems, quantum wires and dots, and Coulomb blockade structures with almost ideal properties can nowadays be fabricated, and subjected to experimental studies. How does one fabricate micro/nanostructures of low dimensionality? How does one perform a nanoscale characterization of these structures? What are the fundamental properties typical to the structures? Which new physical processes in nanostructures need to be understood? What new physical processes may allow us to create new nanostructures? An improved understanding of these topics is necessary for creation of new concepts for future electronic and optoelectronic devices and for characterizing device structures based on those concepts.

This book was released on 1990-02-15 with total page 206 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Numerical simulation is rapidly becoming an important part of the VLSI design process, allowing the engineer to test, evaluate, and optimize various aspects of chip design without resorting to the costly and time-consuming process of fabricating prototypes. This procedure not only accelerates the design process, but also improves the end product, since it is economically feasible to numerically simulate many more options than might otherwise be considered. With the enhanced computing power of today's computers, more sophisticated models are now being developed. This volume contains the proceedings of the AMS-SIAM Summer Seminar on Computational Aspects of VLSI Design, held at the Institute for Mathematics and Its Applications at the University of Minnesota, in the spring of 1987. The seminar featured presentations by some of the top experts working in this area. Their contributions to this volume form an excellent overview of the mathematical and computational problems arising in this area.

Our goal was to foster interaction in this interdisciplinary field which involves electrical engineers, computer scientists, semiconductor physicists and mathematicians, from both university and industry. In particular, the program was meant to encourage the participation of numerical and mathematical analysts with backgrounds in ordinary and partial differential equations, to help get them involved in the mathematical as pects of semiconductor models and circuits. We are grateful to W.M. Coughran, Jr., Julian Cole, Peter Lloyd, and Jacob White for helping Farouk Odeh organize this activity and trust that the proceedings will provide a fitting memorial to Farouk. We also take this opportunity to thank those agencies whose financial support made the program possible: the Air Force Office of Scientific Research, the Army Research Office, the National Science Foundation, and the Office of Naval Research. A vner Friedman Willard Miller, J r. Preface to Part II Semiconductor and integrated-circuit modeling are an important part of the high technology "chip" industry, whose high-performance, low-cost microprocessors and high-density memory designs form the basis for supercomputers, engineering work stations, laptop computers, and other modern information appliances. There are a variety of differential equation problems that must be solved to facilitate such mod eling.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purposes of this book are many. First, we must point out that it is not a device book, as a proper treatment of the range of important devices would require a much larger volume even without treating the important physics for submicron devices. Rather, the book is written principally to pull together and present in a single place, and in a (hopefully) uniform treatment, much of the understanding on relevant physics for submicron devices. Indeed, the understand ing that we are trying to convey through this work has existed in the literature for quite some time, but has not been brought to the full attention of those whose business is the making of submicron devices. It should be remarked that much of the important physics that is discussed here may not be found readily in devices at the 1.0-JLm level, but will be found to be dominant at the O.I-JLm level. The range between these two is rapidly being covered as technology moves from the 256K RAM to the 16M RAM chips.

Book excerpt: In the past, a number of Satellite Conferences have been held in con nection with the International Conference on Physics of Semiconductors, covering selected fields of interest. In 1986, when the main conference was held in Stockholm, Sweden, new. phenomena had to be discussed: super lattices, hot 'electron phenomena and new device structures for high-speed applications. The aim was to select topics which would be of interest to physicists as well as to electronics engineers. Therefore a Satellite Con ference on H!gh-Speed Electronics, Basic Physical Phenomena and Device Principles, was arranged at Saltjobaden, a coastal resort near Stockholm. An organizing committee was established after the first suggestion made by Professor Grimmeiss from the University of Lund, Sweden, and some preliminary discussions on the Conference format. A Program Committee was established to be responsible for the further selection of the invited talks, the regular papers and poster presentation. The aim was to have a broad spectrum of contributions to attract physicists as well as device oriented engineers and to stimulate discussions among the participants. These Proceedings contain all oral and poster presentations, with em phasis on the invited talks, which give a competent overview of the field. The fast publication by Springer-Verlag has permitted the presentation of an up-to-date survey of the principles of high-speed electronics. Incorpo ration in the Springer Series in Electronics and Photonics will enable the book to be distributed worldwide and to reach all interested scientists.

Book excerpt: This Advanced Study Institute on the Electronic Properties of Multilayers and Low Dimensional Semiconductor Structures focussed on several of the most active areas in modern semiconductor physics. These included resonant tunnelling and superlattice phenomena and the topics of ballistic transport, quantised conductance and anomalous magnetoresistance effects in laterally gated two-dimensional electron systems. Although the main emphasis was on fundamental physics, a series of supporting lectures described the underlying technology (Molecular Beam Epitaxy, Metallo-Organic Chemical Vapour Deposition, Electron Beam Lithography and other advanced processing technologies). Actual and potential applications of low dimensional structures in optoelectronic and high frequency devices were also discussed. The ASI took the form of a series of lectures of about fifty minutes' duration which were given by senior researchers from a wide range of countries. Most of the lectures are recorded in these Proceedings. The younger members of the Institute made the predominant contribution to the discussion sessions following each lecture and, in addition, provided most of the fifty-five papers that were presented in two lively poster sessions. The ASl emphasised the impressive way in which this research field has developed through the fruitful interaction of theory, experiment and semiconductor device technology. Many of the talks demonstrated both the effectiveness and limitations of semiclassical concepts in describing the quantum phenomena exhibited by electrons in low dimensional structures.
