Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The island of Bali's sensational image was created by the tourists, artists, and scholars who visited the tiny nation between the two world wars. A Dutch colony from 1908, Bali was a source of revenue for the Dutch government, which began to develop its image as the ultimate vacation spot. The tourism industry spread the idea of Bali as a paradise in which noble, happy, spiritual Balinese--all prodigiously creative artists--lived in innocence. Sensual images of beautiful people on an enchanted isle unspoiled by modernity predominated. Bali also acquired a reputation as a homosexual paradise. A host of books and articles fed these images of Bali until it evolved into one of the most romantic stops on the tourist itinerary. The Balinese people, however, made little profit from the tourist traffic. This history of the development of tourism in Bali stretches from the Dutch occupation in 1906 to the Japanese occupation in 1942. After exhaustive research in published records and in unpublished letters, diaries, and oral histories left by many of the American and European visitors to the island as well as the Balinese residents, the author explores the reasons for Bali's popularity among Westerners and their effects on the native culture.

Book excerpt: The island of Bali has long been characterized in the West as the last “paradise” on earth, but there is far more to this small Indonesian province. Bali Tourism presents an enlightening ethnographic study of some of the most important icons—for tourists and locals alike—in Balinese culture and society and explores the growth of this island as an “exotic” vacation destination. In addition, it offers a firsthand look at many aspects of daily life, a semiotic analysis of its dominant cultural symbols, and insights into tourists’ perceptions of Bali. A thirty page photo section offers a unique glimpse at this remarkable island. Through a distinctive use of cultural analysis and psychoanalytic modes of interpretation, Bali Tourism offers an in-depth study of Balinese tourism, society, and character. This handy, easy-to-read text is an essential overview of what the island has to offer tourists and looks at the exciting possibilities—and the potential pitfalls—of visiting this extraordinary land. The book paints a vivid portrait of this country’s hidden gems and popular tourist destinations, exploring the ways visitors see Bali—and how the Balinese see visitors—as well as the promise and problems Bali faces in developing its tourism industry. Bali Tourism is an ideal book to read before visiting Bali yourself—or recommending/planning a trip for others. The fresh insights it presents will help make any trip to the region more rewarding for the traveler. It is also a unique scholarly resource, complete with informative tables, references, and a bibliography, for academics and students at all levels of tourism studies.

Book excerpt: Essay from the year 2004 in the subject Tourism - Miscellaneous, grade: 1,0 (A), University of Applied Sciences Braunschweig / Wolfenbüttel (Tourism Management), course: English, language: English, abstract: Bali is primarily associated with a paradise consisting of white beaches, romantic sunsets, rice fields and a fascinating culture with lo ts of temples. Every year this image attracts a great number of tourists who are interested in discovering the island and who want to experience Bali’s culture. When tourism in Bali started to develop in the 1970s, it was first a positive effect on the island’s economical situation (increased employment for example); however, the fact that tourism exploded without proper planning within a short period of time leads now to great internal problems. 1 Since the terrorist bombing attacks in October 2002, Bali mo ved more into the limelight and has now not only to combat internal problems, but also external influences on its tourism industry. The aim of this essay is to present an image of the tourist destination “Bali”, an Indonesian island. First, a short count ry profile will be presented to help the reader to get an idea of the island. Chapter three gives a short survey of the tourism development on Bali so that the current state of affairs concerning the actual situation in tourism is clear. The case study then moves on to deal with internal and external problems and their effects on the island. The next chapter reports on strategies that the Bali government pursues in order to struggle with the problems. Finally, chapter six analyses critically the situation leading to a conclusion.

Book excerpt: This work offers a cross-analysis of the development of tourism in Bali, combining international and intercultural (from Indonesian, French, Australian and English researchers), transdisciplinary and inter-generational research. It questions the capacity of tourism, to be a vector of sustainable development, by analyzing its various social, economic and environmental effects within Balinese society. As such, it represents not only a great research tool, but a fantastic teaching aid. Each chapter comes with its own bibliography, and thus acts as a standalone case study, while making a contribution to the overall thrust of the book.

Book excerpt: As the tourism industry grows worldwide, researchers continue to seek solutions and practices that support increased tourism to specific regions. Special interest tourism is a method that looks at how psychological and sociological factors help a visitor choose which destination to visit. By applying this type of tourism in Southeast Asia, the role of emotions, experiences, and place attachment becomes a driving factor for tourists. Special Interest Tourism in Southeast Asia: Emerging Research and Opportunities critically discusses the challenges associated with special interest tourism and how it can be used to overcome unfavorable impacts of tourism for the local community, as well as preserve cultural heritage. The book covers emerging issues such as sustainability, technological advances within this type of tourism, and responses to over tourism and tourism-phobia. It is ideally designed for government officials, policymakers, managers, industry professionals, and university students seeking current research on the recent growth of the tourism industry.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book investigates tourism as a form of globalization within the context of the island of Bali, which has been voted the world's top island destination for the third time running by American travellers. The volume covers the onset of the Asian Crisis, the largest stock-market crash since the Great Depression. The authors chart the turbulence that has afflicted the island at a time of market uncertainty and global political strife and analyze the responses of Bali's business and community leaders to the crises that have buffeted the island since the fall of Suharto. In particular, the book analyzes crisis management with regard to the Bali Bombings, the impact of the bombings on the tourism development cycle and investigates the motives of the bombers. The authors argue that the actions of the bombers can best be understood with regard to the rise of political Islam as a global issue and the book breaks new ground with an analysis of the bombers' global experiences. The book also examines home-grown resistance to certain aspects of globalization, notably the attempt to turn Besakih, the island's mother temple, into a World Heritage Site and top tourist destination.

Book excerpt: "...a succinct and thoughtful description and analysis of the development and haracter of Bali's 'touristic culture'...this is an excellent book for a student readerhip. It renders in straightforward language some quite difficult concepts." - Anthropos "This well-written, readable, and concise book forms an excellent introduction to the relationship between culture and tourism." - Focaal "...there is much to enjoy in this book; the writing is uncomplicated, lively and engaging: the conclusions are both daring and thought-provoking. Above all, thee is the author's readiness to engage with cross-cultural comparison in a theoretically driven and explicit way." - Social Anthropology Based on field research carried out over two decades, the author surveys the development of the anthropology of tourism and its significance, using case studies drawn from Indonesia, New Guinea and Japan. He argues that tourism, once seen as rather peripheral by anthropologists, has to be treated as a phenomenon of major importance, both because the size of the flows of people and capital involved, and because it is one of the major sites in which the meeting and hybridization of culture takes place. Tourism, he suggests, leads not to the destruction of local cultures, as many critics have implied, but rather to the emergence of new cultural forms. The central part of the book presents a detailed case-study of the island of Bali in Indonesia. It traces the development of tourism there during the colonial period, and the ways in which "Balinese traditional culture" was developed first by western artists and scholars in the colonial period, and more recently by Balinese government officials in the guise of "cultural tourism." The general theme of the "presentation of tradition" is also discussed in relation to Toraja funerals in the Indonesian province of Sulawesi, western visitors to the Sepik River in Papua-New-Guinea, and the small city of Tono in northern Japan which has become a center for the study of folk-lore.

Book excerpt: As Bali changes from a sleepy agriculturally- based island living its culture on a daily basis, to a dynamic tourism-based resort replacing the traditional with modern and Balinese culture with Western lifestyle, I decided that we needed to record as much as possible for the future. Who better to turn to than the exceptionally talented Jill Gocher whose ability to capture life beautifully with her camera is outstanding. The result, in the pages of this book, is Bali away from the tourist track where life continues as it has for centuries. But even this has another side, another aspect: the myths and legends that underlie so much of Balinese culture. For this we turned to immensely talented historian, art critic and art custodian Jean Couteau, who has been regularly writing on aspects of Balinese culture and belief in NOW! Bali. So this marvellous combination of talents came together to create “Secret Bali”, to bring the “seen” and the “unseen” elements of Balinese life together in these pages.

Book excerpt: Essay from the year 2003 in the subject Sociology - Culture, Technology, Peoples / Nations, grade: Good, La Trobe University Melbourne (Sociology), course: Development, Globalisation and Culture, 16 entries in the bibliography, language: English, abstract: To be in a paradise which is exotic, strange, with amazing landscapes and people who are not affected by corrupted society, is the main reason for tourists to visit foreign countries. However, the questions is, if increasing tourism would be an advantage or a disadvantage for the potential host country, and how tourism affects the economy, society, the and the local environment. International tourism is one of the fastest growing sectors of the global economy and represents profitability for the visiting country and positively impacts the economy. The question is, whether the economic advantage compensates the damage, which is inflicted to the society, environment and the culture by the tourists.
