Book excerpt: "Dry eye is one of the most common complaints of patients who present in clinic to be seen and treated by professional eye doctors. It has been reported that 20% of patients, over 45 years of age, experience dry eye symptoms. Based on several of the largest studies of dry eye to date, the Women's Health Study and Physicians Health Study, almost 5 million people over the age of 50 have dry eye. The same reports shows that most eye care providers manage these signs based solely on clinical findings. This proves that the more we understand of the causes for dry eye, as well as the signs to look for, the more successful we can be in treating each case that may present within our office. In 2007, the Dry Eye Workshop (DEWS), Definition and Classification Subcommittee, produced a new definition of dry eye. Dry eye is a multifactoral disease of the tears and ocular surface that results in symptoms of discomfort, visual disturbance, and tear film instability with potential damage to the ocular surface. It is accompanied by increased osmolarity of the tear film and inflammation of the ocular surface."--Introd.
