Download or read book Edible Insects written by Arnold van Huis and published by Bright Sparks. This book was released on 2013 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Edible insects have always been a part of human diets, but in some societies there remains a degree of disdain and disgust for their consumption. Although the majority of consumed insects are gathered in forest habitats, mass-rearing systems are being developed in many countries. Insects offer a significant opportunity to merge traditional knowledge and modern science to improve human food security worldwide. This publication describes the contribution of insects to food security and examines future prospects for raising insects at a commercial scale to improve food and feed production, diversify diets, and support livelihoods in both developing and developed countries. It shows the many traditional and potential new uses of insects for direct human consumption and the opportunities for and constraints to farming them for food and feed. It examines the body of research on issues such as insect nutrition and food safety, the use of insects as animal feed, and the processing and preservation of insects and their products. It highlights the need to develop a regulatory framework to govern the use of insects for food security. And it presents case studies and examples from around the world. Edible insects are a promising alternative to the conventional production of meat, either for direct human consumption or for indirect use as feedstock. To fully realise this potential, much work needs to be done by a wide range of stakeholders. This publication will boost awareness of the many valuable roles that insects play in sustaining nature and human life, and it will stimulate debate on the expansion of the use of insects as food and feed.
Book Synopsis New Strategies in Locust Control by : Stephan Krall
Download or read book New Strategies in Locust Control written by Stephan Krall and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 1997-12-01 with total page 560 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the late eighties large-scale control operations were carried out to control a major desert locust upsurge in Africa. For the first time since the banning of organochlorine pesticides these operations relied mainly on non-persistent pesticides such as organophosphates and pyrethroids. The amount of pesticides sprayed and the area covered were probably the highest in the history of locust control and raised criticism with respect to efficacy, economic viability and environmental impact. As a consequence, applied research into the problem was intensified, both at the national and the international level, with the goal of finding new and environmentally sound approaches and solutions to locust and grasshopper control. Emphasis was laid on developing new control agents and techniques.

Book Synopsis The Bionomics of Grasshoppers, Katydids and Their Kin by : S. K. Gangwere
Download or read book The Bionomics of Grasshoppers, Katydids and Their Kin written by S. K. Gangwere and published by Oxford University Press, USA. This book was released on 1997 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents a broad review of the biology of grasshoppers and plague locusts, as well as katydids, crickets, mantises and other economically important orthopteroid insects. While grasshopper and locust plagues have decreased recently in North America, they continue unabated in many other parts of the world, including South America, Australia, the Middle East, Africa and western and southern Asia. Similarly, katydids attack cereals, orchards and other cultivated vegetation, and crickets damage tea, coffee and tuber crops among other plants. There have been considerable advances in our knowledge of these groups since other books addressing this subject were published. These other books have also focused on a more limited range of taxa. This book is written from a broad, comparative biological, behavioral and evolutionary approach best expressed by the neglected term bionomics. It thus covers systematics, distribution, behavior, physiology and genetics, as well as pest control and conservation. Written by authorities from the USA, Canada, UK, Spain, Israel, South Africa, India and Russia, it represents a major work for entomologists and those concerned with crop protection from pest Orthoptera.
