Book Synopsis Brazilian Detective Chronicles by : Luís Fernando de Lima Júnior
Download or read book Brazilian Detective Chronicles written by Luís Fernando de Lima Júnior and published by Luís Fernando de Lima Júnior. This book was released on 2023-07-26 with total page 112 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How much is a life worth? Are some lives more or less important? For the investigators at the Homicide Division of São José dos Campos, the answer is, 'every life is worth it and represents a loss to those who love them.' 'Our day begins when yours ends…' It's truly a grim but fitting motto, as the dedication and commitment of the police officers are the deciding factor in surpassing the state average of 42% homicide clearance rate. The motto is fitting because the dedication and effort of these officers compensate for the well-known lack of infrastructure, the true bottleneck of all public services. Most people view public service (including the Police) as bureaucracy that hinders everything and favours those who merely seek a position. What they don't realize is that the position carries a responsibility and a duty of dedication that surpasses any private job. There is no overtime, no stomachache, no excuse. If the phone rings and the call is to attend a crime scene, even in the dead of night, every second counts. After all, it's not just another case or an inert body. It's a grieving family that awaits justice to bring some comfort. Conceptually, police investigation is a technical activity, rooted in the production and construction of knowledge about facts and people, solely for the purpose of providing procedural instruction through written reports. Naturally, this requires technical expertise to gather information and discernment to understand and transform it into knowledge, as well as writing skills to put an explanation of the facts, circumstances, and individuals involved on paper clearly. In other words, it's not for just anyone. In practice, investigation is an art, and Brazilian Detective Chronicles tells us a bit about this through real cases solved by the former Homicide Team of the General Investigations Department, now the 3rd Homicide Division of the Specialized Criminal Investigations Division of São José dos Campos. It's no wonder our city is a national reference. With an annual average of 80 cases in 2016, the team cleared 70% of homicides, even with a shortage of personnel and the precariousness of working conditions choking the investigative efforts. Today, the numbers are even better (less than 40 homicides per year and more than 75% of cases cleared), making São José dos Campos one of the best and safest cities in Brazil. In this book, through the account of real cases, we reflect on the causes of criminality and present some conclusions that necessarily depend on a government focus on public policies for education and youth promotion. The idea has always been to explain, in an accessible way, how investigations unfold and how we reached the level of national reference. It wasn't easy, but we tried to make the narrative as enjoyable and enlightening as possible. After all, this is our history, our vocation, and the reason we do not hesitate to move forward in the face of danger.
Book Synopsis The Mustang Chronicles Volume 1 by : Daimon Saint Jaimes
Download or read book The Mustang Chronicles Volume 1 written by Daimon Saint Jaimes and published by eBookIt.com. This book was released on 2016-11-07 with total page 150 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: THE MUSTANG CHRONICLES, VOL. 1: ROCKETT '68 is a literary, lyrical action novel written in the Picaresque tradition. The story unfolds from the perspective of the hero, or villain depending on your opinion about such matters, in the first-person present tense. Gripping, taut prose intertwines with more lyrical passages like a singular wine perfectly paired with its course. For connoisseurs and casual readers alike, this novel serves up a savory, stimulating read. TMC Vol. 1 takes place at the zenith of 1960's America and explores the zeitgeist, counterculture, cars, and music that defined a generation and indelibly influenced American culture. TMC Vol. 1 pays homage to 1960's pop Americana in fascinating detail, all the while moving readers inexorably toward the novel's fantastical conclusion. Keep your eyes peeled and intellect at the ready—deeper meaning, subtlety, and nuance abound. The novel's episodic style eschews linear constraints, along with the well-worn flat trajectory from introduction to conclusion whence all tangents are neatly tied together and presented dutifully at the end—not unlike a dog presenting a ball to his master for a routine game of fetch. You will find no such mundanity in The Mustang Chronicles, Vol. 1: Rockett '68. Just read it. You'll be glad you did. www.themustangchronicles.com

It came as a surprise to her that her long-time agent wanted something new from her, something that she was neither interested in nor wanted to write about—vampires. She agreed that it was an up-an-coming genre, both in movies and on the television, but Chava was already busy with writing a new novel and finishing the latest. Lacking motivation, interest, and ideas, she gives in to Angela’s request and travels to Romania, a country she is not particularly fond of due to some previous bad experiences there. After meeting her Romanian tour guide, a young woman named Milena, Chava becomes interested in her story about the murders and disappearances of her family members. When Milena also disappears, Chava is stunned. Not having transportation or a tour guide, she reluctantly accepts the assistance of a handsome and mysterious man whom she meets by chance. While Alexandru, “Alex” to his friends, shows her around, he also appears to be her savior when multiple times strangers make attempts on Chava’s life. Dead bodies, disappearances, mystery castles’ secret chambers compare nothing to Chava’s suspicions about Alex who seems to be feared by everyone they encounter. Although she is drawn to him like a magnet, Chava has never been more determined in her life than about finding out Alex’s past, about the man who wears nothing but black, the color of hate.

Download or read book The Absent Jews written by Cordelia Hess and published by Berghahn Books. This book was released on 2017-05-01 with total page 334 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For nearly a century, it has been a commonplace of Central European history that there were no Jews in medieval Prussia—the result, supposedly, of the ruling Teutonic Order’s attempts to create a purely Christian crusader’s state. In this groundbreaking historical investigation, however, medievalist Cordelia Hess demonstrates the very weak foundations upon which that assumption rests. In exacting detail, she traces this narrative to the work of a single, minor Nazi-era historian, revealing it to be ideologically compromised work that badly mishandles its evidence. By combining new medieval scholarship with a biographical and historiographical exploration grounded in the 20th century, The Absent Jews spans remote eras while offering a fascinating account of the construction of historical knowledge.

Book Synopsis Fear and Loathing in the North by : Cordelia Heß
Download or read book Fear and Loathing in the North written by Cordelia Heß and published by Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG. This book was released on 2015-04-24 with total page 385 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Due to the scarcity of sources regarding actual Jewish and Muslim communities and settlements, there has until now been little work on either the perception of or encounters with Muslims and Jews in medieval Scandinavia and the Baltic Region. The volume provides the reader with the possibility to appreciate and understand the complexity of Jewish-Christian-Muslim relations in the medieval North. The contributions cover topics such as cultural and economic exchange between Christians and members of other religions; evidence of actual Jews and Muslims in the Baltic Rim; images and stereotypes of the Other. The volume thus presents a previously neglected field of research that will help nuance the overall picture of interreligious relations in medieval Europe.
