Book excerpt: United States Environmental Protection Agency recently incorporated the Leaching Environmental Assessment Framework (LEAF) into the SW-846 to assess leaching for a variety of solid materials. In comparison with the traditional single-point leaching methods Toxicity Characteristic Leaching Procedure (TCLP) and Synthetic Precipitation Leaching Procedure (SPLP), LEAF can provide more robust data and cover a wider range of pH and site-specific conditions. However, LEAF methods are relatively new and there is limited data, guidance, and experience available in comparison with SPLP. The first study is a risk assessment study for beneficial use of lime drinking water treatment sludge with other additives. Total element analysis, SPLP, LEAF Method 1316, and SPLP under reducing conditions were used to assess risk for direct exposure and contamination of groundwater. The second study was an assessment of the differences between LEAF batch leaching tests and SPLP. Five different leaching parameters were identified between LEAF and SPLP. Experiments were conducted to evaluate the influence of each parameter on the leaching results.

It provides a holistic approach, exploring the factors that impact water quality and quantity, and the regulations, policy and management methods that are necessary to maintain this vital resource. It offers a historical viewpoint as well as an overview and foundation of the physical, chemical, and biological characteristics affecting the management of freshwater environments. The book concentrates on broad and general concepts, providing an interdisciplinary foundation. The author covers the methods of measurement and classification; chemical, physical, and biological characteristics; indicators of ecological health; and management and restoration. He also considers common indicators of environmental health; characteristics and operations of regulatory control structures; applicable laws and regulations; and restoration methods. The text delves into rivers and streams in the first half and lakes and reservoirs in the second half. Each section centers on the characteristics of those systems and methods of classification, and then moves on to discuss the physical, chemical, and biological characteristics of each. In the section on lakes and reservoirs, it examines the characteristics and operations of regulatory structures, and presents the methods commonly used to assess the environmental health or integrity of these water bodies. It also introduces considerations for restoration, and presents two unique aquatic environments: wetlands and reservoir tailwaters. Written from an engineering perspective, the book is an ideal introduction to the aquatic and limnological sciences for students of environmental science, as well as students of environmental engineering. It also serves as a reference for engineers and scientists involved in the management, regulation, or restoration of freshwater environments.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a unique compilation on the use of leaching/extraction methods in different fields. The use of leaching test methods is increasing in various areas including: waste treatment and disposal; incineration of waste; soil clean-up and reuse of cleaned soil; sludge treatment. This has led to (and may increasingly lead to) the development of a large number of very similar tests in these different fields. However, these developments are taking place with no clear understanding of their mutual relationships. In view of these developments, efforts are needed to harmonize the leaching procedures that could be adapted for different matrices, as well as validate the use of existing tests in other fields. The development of a wide variety of leaching/extraction tests for different matrices is undesirable from a regulatory point of view and undesirable for industry. Clarity in testing is crucial in producer-consumer relations. This collective document will assist in improving the understanding of leaching from a variety of sources and will, where appropriate, help to bring together the approaches used in different technical fields and in different countries.

This book was released on 2022 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The disposal of residual waste streams and treatment byproducts (WTBs) generated on-site by many major industries, poses environmental risks due to the elevated levels of heavy metals WTBs contain and the potential release of contaminants to the environment. Solidification/stabilization (S/S) of waste is an attractive technology to address this challenge, as it provides a permanent disposal strategy. S/S methods entail solidifying the waste stream by mixing combinations of additives such as lime and Portland cement (OPC) with coal combustion residual products e.g., fly ash (FA). This co-disposal approach creates a solid that encapsulates contaminants through physical and chemical processes. However, given the variable compositions of WTBs, each solidified mix requires a different mix design to successfully encapsulate contaminants. Currently, the mix design process is approached empirically. Successful mix designs prevent contaminants from entering the environment via leaching. Current methods used to evaluate leaching from S/S solids (e.g., Leaching Environmental Assessment Framework (LEAF)) require time-intensive and expensive testing. Consequently, this work aims to fulfill two main objectives: develop a method to efficiently screen mixtures to solidify and stabilize WTBs and develop a novel radial flow-through test that assesses the leaching of heavy metals from different solidified mix designs and simultaneously determines hydraulic conductivity of the solidified material. The small scale reactor analysis (SSRA) developed to screen mixtures was able to assess the ability to stabilize WTBs when mixed with a variety of additives. However, this method was unable to determine solidification properties needed to create a sturdy solid. The rapid flow through test (RFT) adapted to evaluate leaching and hydraulic conductivity was able to determine the leaching behavior of heavy metals over time from different S/S mixture designs across a range of different pH values and ionic strengths and simultaneously determine the hydraulic conductivity of the S/S solid. Future work should address improvements in the preparation of RFT samples to reduce variability in hydraulic conductivity that led to changes in leaching behavior among replicates

Book excerpt: Quantifying the environmental impact of potentially hazardous materials in a wide variety of applications and disposal scenarios is essential to proper management of these materials. In an environmental assessment, the release of contaminants from the waste body with time has to be determined rather than aiming at concentration limits as currently used. In this approach, test results should yield information on leach rates. This implies the use of test methods other than those currently applied in the regulatory framework (EP, TCLP, DIN 38414-S4).
